I was there that night watching Long John. While working for Kassner Music and it sister record Company President Records in 67-68 age 16/17 as the office boy, at 25 Denmark St, WC2. One of their acts was Felice Taylor who had a hit, I feel love coming on in 67, and I had to go to Top of the pops with Felice Taylor in early Nov 67, to watch he mime. I also so saw that night, Long John Baldry, Let the heart aches begin, The Dave Clark five , Every body knows and The Troggs, Love is all around.
Just exquisite. He brought so much of the blues over to his short stint as a crooner. There are many great tracks on the Pye records. I read somewhere in an interview that LJB had planned to record a new version of Let the Heartaches Begin, late in his career. I know it never happened, but it’s nice to know he made peace with the song. I know it was sort of his millstone for a while.
I think he recorded it for ‘Baldry’s Back’ in June 2004. He began singing it again in 2003 when he toured Europe as part of the ‘Legends of R&B’ package. I think he planned to issue it as a single. Would love to hear it. It apparently had more of a blues vibe. You’re right, he recorded some nice stuff for Pye. Have you heard ‘Lord You Made The Night Too Long’, ‘Setting Fire To The Tail of a Fox’ and ‘Where Are My Eyes?’ All great and Long John wrote them.
@@longjohnbaldryappreciationpage Oh my, every time I hear of “Baldry’s Back”, I just wish more and more that it will be released one day. I didn’t know he started singing Heartaches live again! That’s wonderful. Yes, I’ve heard all those songs. They’re all great!
