Robert Newton's portrayal of a pirate established the definitive pirate accent which has been used over and over again in numerous portrayals of pirates ever since. He basically used the local accent from Shaftesbury in the county of Dorset in England which was where he came from.
I used to watch Long John Silver on TV back in the 50’s. Our TV was small and full of “snow” , however TV was a brand new novelty and we didn’t mind at all. I especially loved Long John’s soliloquy during the opening credits, and actually memorized the poem later on. There couldn’t be a better Captain Silver then that played by Robert Newton. His gruff, gravely voice was perfect for the role, as were his choice of words. I would like to think he set a standard for any future pirate dialogue. Thanks for putting the Adventures of Long John Silver on RU-vid for all us old fans to enjoy once again.
