Hey, Justin, this is Tim, the drummer/bassist/keyboardist from the track. Tony didn't even tell me about your channel until after he sent the video, but I'm loving it. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen to our song. Awesome, insightful, and deeply knowledgeable takes all around. Thank you so much!
Hey, Justin. Tim and I were so surprised and thrilled with the positive reaction you had to our song! This has lit a real fire under us to finish the project. I love your gym analogy because you're a great sensei and we will continue to use your channel to learn and grow. Thanks for sharing all your experience and insights with a larger community that's hungry for it.
As a former professional vocalist, frontman, guitarist, and audio engineer I say wow. What Justin is offering is so important. This is the stuff that every guitar player and musician needs to know. It ain't about you, it's about the song. Learn how to back up and support the vocalist. Learn when to shut the Fuck up, no one wants to hear your over the vocalist. Learn how to support your band mates solos. Learn how to get your tone at low volumes. Learn how to control your ego which we all have. Do all this and you'll get more gigs than you can handle. Love this channel! I'm learning a lot.
100% , In fact, I believe when you don't overpower the vocalist, The Listeners, listen and appreciate a LOT more what yer all doing together AND singly. Support the song.
This video took me to school. Loved the song and the arrangement. The fadeout was completely unexpected, yet fully appreciated. One can only imagine where the trip would have taken us at a live performance. So many bits that sound pleasingly familiar but never cliché. Proving once again, that as with most great music, it begins with musicians who respectfully embrace the age old addage that we're all merely standing on the shoulders of the maestro giants that came before us. BTW, channel's format is genius! I am so grateful that some computer algorithm led me to your channel. I haven't seen a post yet that didn't provide something I needed. You sharing your experience and knowledge has been a Godsend.
Whoa! The keyboard opening of the song was like Zeppelin's "No Quarter". Even the same key. Not a criticism, it's a great way to open the song. So what "help" did they need? Sounds like "no help required" to me! Great stuff! That ending sounds like someone is running away, great effect. Yep, the chorus is 4 - 3 - 4 - 5. Hey, it adds up to 16.
Yaasssssss!🤩 Felt like I pull a cd off my Silver Chair, Alice and Chains, Sound Garden stack and hit play. Took me back to my 90’s childhood and the error of music I was surrounded in at the time. Super cool 🔥 loved it💯! When the song hit into that first verse I knew we was taking a ride🤘🏼. Bass player killed it hell they all did. Thanks for sharing 💯 now I wanna hear the rest of the cd😎. “They got that sauce!” 😄💪🏼🤙🏼
I can't express strongly enough how much knowledge your videos provide to musicians at all levels. There is always a nugget of previously unknown information that I take away from your videos. These review and advice type videos specifically are my favorite and I don't think anyone else is really doing this on youtube and certainly not with the care and constructive nature that comes through in your videos. This song is great and I would definitely listen to more from these artists. I hope we get to hear the final product. Great stuff all around.
Love this - song and your commentary . As an average guitar player and more accomplished electronic songwriter producer , I do indulgently watch too many guitar hero focused channels! . Knowing where to put your guitar into a track is different overlooked skill . I feel like more of a producer that can play some guitar rather than ‘a guitarist’ but do realise this skill is just as important as ‘showing off’ …
Wow, there’s so much going on there! Incredible. Sounds like a lot of timing changes. Also, the dudes voice is amazing. I’d absolutely love to hear more of what they could produce. I learned so much from you in this one…back to the studio for me to try and finish that song I thought was already finished :/
This song is fantastic! Feels like an unearthed masterpiece from the early nineties. LOVE the vocal, and I don’t mind the minor pitch imperfections. Can’t wait to hear more from this band. And Justin, this is now my favorite RU-vid series - thank you for sharing your wisdom and creating this community of players focused on serving the song.
Your reaction for the tempo change where it really took off was priceless. I was right with you 😂 I actually did this same thing with a best friend of mine who lived 4800 miles away and we started a band under the same name and made a few albums. Great fun between friends.
Justin - when someone as straight up and low key as you posts a 'You NEED to hear this' video, I knew it wasn't click bait : ) This song is full of cool vibe.... thanks for posting.
I know everyone hears things differently based on the music era they grew up in but I hear some 10 Years After and a lot of cool - damn the neighbors-garage band. I am almost 70 and I want to jump up and down and scream with joy!
At first I heard a late 70s southern/arena rock thing happening, then I get a modern vibe. Depending on how y’all produce this, I think it could go a few different ways and still sound amazing. I’d buy this in a heartbeat!
Really cool song! Super moody and psychedelic vibe. The singer's voice reminds me of the guy from Toad the wet sprocket... really clean and rich. Awesome job!
dude, you are giving such great advice, its like I am listening to the playback in my head when you talk about playing music lol I am first a songwriter, and I sing and play instruments....enough to get by. I have a song that I would love to get your feedback on, I have not tracked it yet but am planning to, its a political themed song so you may not even want to and its pretty obvious what Im writing about. Anyway, when I track it I will send it to you to check out. I have been sitting on it a couple years already. I have at least 40 songs that are ready to be recorded but I just got jaded with music a while after playing live for decades and watching it all go in the toilet. Really dig your channel and your knowledge, and its fantastic that you are taking the time to help the music community....thats legendary status to me
First of all…Tim and Tony…Awesome song guys!!! I’m a 57-yr-old guy who has embraced many genres of music during my lifetime…..from Classic Rock (back when it was just Rock), 80’s Arena Rock, 90’s Grunge, Modern Post-Rock, Americana Country…..and now I love modern Fingerstyle-Acoustic music. Each new one didn’t replace the other for me…I just enlarged my internal music catalog to incorporate and appreciate them all. Justin…My first impression of this song was “The Ocean” by Led Zeppelin, with that piano intro. Then my brain went straight to Jerry Cantrell’s “Boggy Depot” album…which to me, has a slightly (but noticeably) different vibe from Alice In Chains. I love everything about this song…the piano parts…the tasteful guitar work…the amazing dance of the rhythm section…the vocal harmonies, melody lines and syncopation…the subtle time-signature change in the chorus…and on and on. Justin, I don’t know Sunny Day Real Estate, but I’ll check them out today. Guys, after spending 25 years in the corporate world, when I turned 50 I left it behind and followed my heart back to my love for music. Unlike you guys, I never had the level of talent necessary to make a living playing music…so I channeled my love of music in a different direction that I happen to be talented enough to make a living with. I now spend my days building acoustic guitars for an international clientele. I listen to music all day long in my shop as I’m working, and I would absolutely take this completed album (if the rest of the songs end up this good) and put it on my regular rotation!!! Well done guys. Justin, thank you for your unique content. You’re now floating around inside the upper echelon of my favorite RU-vid channels. -joel
Man. Soooo stoked you referanced Sunny Day...I was thinking the same. Also, I have been stuck and set my guitar down. Since watching your channel. The drive to play again is comming back. Thank you!
Cool! I get so many different elements from this. I hate to compare and contrast to bands, but I guess we all do that a bit. Some Zeppelin'ish stuff in intro and outro, vocal tonalities at times of Toad the Wet Sprocket and Jerry Cantrell, some Tool or U2 type droning guitar parts while the bass moves, clever use of time signatures without being too out there, etc. Bottom line is I really dug the song, as well as the feedback Justin gives. Valuable information given from this channel! Thanks, man. 👍
This was really cool and informative. Wish you could produce that track, I really enjoyed it. To Tony & Tim, best wishes! That was really good, would love to hear more and I will.
Great great song. And I have to say that what you do Justin is really really inspiring. Even here thousands of miles away I feel all the good vibes. And guys: Get to work, you got it!!!
You’re such as Pro Justin… on all levels…. Cool track!!! My producers ear def hears the ending differently… not sure the transition works, but dudes you gotta reconnect and make your music… ✌️
Kinda reminiscent of underground 80's pop/rock....? It didn't resonate with me BUT I love that real music is making a comeback. Keep writing and recording guys. There is definitely a place on the wheel of musical genres for this. If I had to nail down what I had a difficult time connecting with is that there are portions that don't flow naturally, like the 3 beat, 4 beat, 5 beat portions. I also feel that there needs to be a smoother transition into the outro. But that's just my opinion. I bet there are lots of people that would love this...😊😊😊
My favorite new RU-vid channel. Love your insight on these viewer submissions. I know your time is valuable, which makes these videos even more impressive.
Hey Man. I hear what you're saying about the pitch being just the slightest bit off on the vocal. But I think that's coming from the fact that you are a professional in today's modern machine of hyper produced music where everything is perfect because if it isn't on the take perfect, the engineer will autotune it and make it perfect. There are a lot of us out here who like music that still has it's imperfections and it's humanity. I love the vocal the way it is. But I'm also a guy who likes geddy lee's singing so take that for what it is. The song is great and all the changes in major/minor feel and rhythmically and having all the retro sounds that make this song sound like it could have been released literally in any decade from the late 60s through to last month are awesome. I would buy this album.
Man i love this channel so much!!! Fantastic song. Anwesome musical journey. The intro had me thinking a Type O Negative vibe and then the chorus and outro ughh!!! Freaking awesome. Please finish the project so we can all bask in it!!
Sweet song. Loved it. You can tell right away, it's a winner. I want the rest of the album on repeat. There's a place for the kind of cacophonous ending with the key change, increased energy, dueling guitar solo stuff, and the fade. The whole album couldn't do that but this would be a great 1 song or 4 song. Batting cleanup is for the home run dinger and this is it.
I've heard and used an analogy to convey humility: Two bridge builders bid a job, one gets it. The one who did not is happy the bridge got built. Simple enough. I say a lot to my family - totally tongue in cheek, "I am mad I didn't write this song (a great song we are listening to)". Said it to myself hearing this. I am so glad this song was written and recorded. Wish it was me, but happy it is done. Fantastic... so looking forward to hearing more. Not at all to do that 'feel' is more important thing (excuse for bad performance often)... but I genuinely felt the pitch of the vocals as it is would be best... don't always think that... I just felt it here on this tune for what it is worth... no need to reply to this. Just want to say thanks for uploading it.
Outstanding…definitely make the album! Justin, really enjoyed your analysis as well. Slowing down to understand why something worked is every bit as valuable as understanding what something needs, or why it didn’t work. I also agree with some of the comments in the comments sections about the vocal pitch. When it’s within tolerances and captures the vibe, I’ll take that any day over pitch corrected. If “there may have been a better take”, that might be fair ball. I’d still buy this as is though. The “meat register”. Yes!
so here's the deal. i just saw a vid of yours from two years ago. you ain't the same fellow. its a time warp or something. maybe some acid too. the two years ago justin looks like the dickesh brother of the current justin. there's a song in there somewhere, cowboy! keep up the great work. love the channel! and i dig your initial reaction to that song. those few seconds told the story. that chorus is superb. a GREAT way to drop. killer!
28:20 . . . I'm doing that right now. Our band leader brought us a new song (covering a pretty well-known Nashville-based band) and I'm working up my electric guitar parts from their RU-vid video. This is my fun . . . and I don't have to worry about getting road-weary, we're a house band. :)
Very cool song, I like it a lot! At 25:00 your comment got me thinking, how much would one pay to have a group of pros cut a song! That would be a cool video and make a songwriter very happy!
Yep, fantastic song. Keep up the great work Tony and buddy. I would definitely listen to more. Justin, this is easily the most inspiring channel I've listened to in many years of RU-vid. What about a video on charting? I'm sure it would enable me to learn what is going on in songs much more effectively.
Justin, This such cool and inspiring way for us to learn and grow as artists. I love hearing what others, who are not pros, are doing and their stories! How does one submit their song to you? Im working on recording my second track and would love to submit the demo when finished.😊
This is the best song Ive heard in a couple decades, fantastic job guys you need to put this up for sale seriously... The only thing I didnt care for was the fast part, the vibe the song started with was so dripping sweet, would have loved the song to retain that and fade out
I'd add a few rest beats before going into the outro jam modulation section. It feels like the song needs to resolve and set a touch more before taking off like that, right? Tease the listener rather than surprise them right there. Maybe add more reverb to the piano for extra mood? The bassline is great! It dances during the verse when the guitars pull back to make space for the vocal. Smart and very effective. Nice track, bravo!!
Justin you are a very rare type of person, someone who can explain things in a way that can be understood. Sounds simple but there are so many RU-vid channels hosted by people with great knowledge but little sense of how to get that knowledge across to your audience. I learn so much from all of your videos.
I wish more people used distorted organ and Sax in tunes. Deep Purple had that magic. I wanna make a track with a distorted organ bass line. I think that was what ZZ Top was trying for with the original Eliminator songs...unfortunately it didn't work the way they wanted it to. For this tune I would drop it a half step and put more power/grit into the vocal.
Love your channel Justin. It’s different (in a good way) than any other music channel I’ve be exposed to. I think the song is great. Would love to find a way to purchase/download it. The outro lead guitar reminds me of Gary Richrath.
I know it’s good when I don’t like it on first pass, and then by the 3rd time hearing it I’m like, yeah, I don’t know what it is, but this feels good, I like this.
