Long-lost ship found in Lake Huron, solving 128-year-old mystery

Even for the Thunder Bay area, a perilous swath of northern Lake Huron off the Michigan coast that has devoured many a ship, the Ironton’s fate seems particularly cruel.
The 191-foot (58-meter) cargo vessel collided with a grain hauler on a blustery night in September 1894, sinking both. The Ironton’s captain and six sailors clambered into a lifeboat but it was dragged to the bottom before they could detach it from the ship. Only two crewmen survived.
The gravesite long eluded shipwreck hunters.
Now, the mystery has been solved, officials with Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, Michigan, said Wednesday. The Associated Press obtained details of the discovery ahead of the announcement.

There's a glass bottom boat shipwreck tour that starts at the Thunder Bay harbor in Alpena. When I worked for the National Forest service in 2021, I sent families there when they were looking for things to do.

It wouldn't be hard to find where it is by looking at the people involved, the ship and it's movements over the years, records and so forth. I'll bet there are already divers who have at least explored it, and likely taken what they could of interest.

If it's deep enough, it should be preserved like they're saying. Look, but don't touch. The still tethered life boats really hit to make the story complete.

As far as ocean water goes, sunlight is still very visible down to 200 meters (over 600ft) or so. Lake Huron's deepest point is around 750ft. Not sure if salt water or fresh water makes any difference in those numbers, but, there ya go.

The water is dangerous. I've lived on The South Coast of England virtually all my life, any large body of water is dangerous. Storms and fogs make it even worse. Every winter when the freshers arrive at our local Universities, if we've bad storms, then out come the landsmen, who've never lived by the sea. To them water is what you see in a swimming pool or bath. Not many tonnes of moving liquid you can't breath in. Every year at least one or two will die playing tag with the waves.

Depends on how the wrecks occurred and how long it took them to go down. Most sinkings aren't instant. Lots attempt to fight the process for hours or even days before they're forced to abandon ship. The other ship could potentially be miles away.
