There are many different scope mounts and rings available for you to use on your long range precision rifle. Which ever choice you end up making, there are certain things you want to understand before mounting them. Your ability to track moving targets and acquire targets quickly will hinge upon how your scope is situated on your rifle. Most of the grievances rifle shooters have about using optics are rooted in poorly mounted optics. If the scope is set up right, you should have no problems getting on target quickly and efficiently.
In this video, Rex walks you through the entire scope mounting procedure while discussing equipment selection as he goes. This may not be the most riveting action packed episode ever produced, but it is loaded with numerous tips and insights concerning the topic. If your watch this all the way through, you should understand everything you need to know to get your optics properly mounted.
Rex's recommendations:
1. Use a one piece scope base if possible.
2. Match the base to the rings --use the same material (steel on steel or aluminum on aluminum).
3. Leaving enough room for your bolt handle operation, try to get the scope as low as you can -- this may require careful measuring of your scope dimensions before purchasing rings and bases.
4. Use thread locker.
5. Be careful not to over torque / damage your screws.
Rifle: Remington Model 700 SPS Varmint, .308 Win w/ AICS
Base: TPS, 1-Piece, XP, 20 MOA, alloy steel
Rings: TPS, 34mm, diameter, TSR, Medium 1.185", alloy steel
Optic: Steiner (Germany), Military Scope 3X-12X56mm GB2 MIL-DOT, Illuminated, Front Focal Plane, 0.1 MIL w/Zero Stop, CCW Elevation Adjustment
Rex will do a video on bore sighting and zeroing in a future video. Stay tuned!

Rex, One thing you didn't mention (unless I missed it) that some folks may need to know is when checking for eye relief what power setting (highest power setting) the scope needs to be set to. With a variable scope that can play a big part in proper eye relief when setting up the scope.

I know you have a huge following, but I am going to give my opinion in over 45 yrs experience in firearms. Saying you can tell the Torque needed is false. We proved that a million times over with our torque simulator setup in the Air Force. 100 percent of the people who claimed they could tell the needed torque by feel were off by large percentage. Is this application super critical? No, but I want the best setup I can get. The same with the leveling. People naturally tilt or have the rifle canted slightly. I have had customer argue their scope was not level. I can put the levels showing the rifle is level and the scope is level to the rifle and they still think it is off. The reason they think it is off is because they are holding the rifle on a tilt. Levels are absolutely needed.Lapping--- those bases are not aligned and that is why the scope was sticking in them. Lapping is very important.Take it or leave it, either way I enjoy your videos.

+Joe Anderson Thank you for the excellent commentary, sir! That seems about right... upon reflection... many folks struggle to get stuff level and don't have the torsional discernment necessary to reach the target torque level. I guess its worth recognizing that although some experienced folks know what "snug" should be, a more quantifiable method may be advised for the less "torquey" of the species ;-)

+Joe Anderson I agree 100%...torque and level both need precision measuring.

Can I just leave my scope canted a little then, so that the reticle is level when it's shouldered in a natural way (with a slight tilt)?
@A_friend_of_Aristotle
@A_friend_of_Aristotle 8 лет назад
+Pastafarian Yes you can, but don't expect your accuracy to hold beyond your zero range. Most people sight-in their rifle/scope combination for a specific distance, then either use their mil-dot reticle or make adjustments to their scope for targets closer or further down range (and for wind, etc.). If your scope reticle is not level with your rifle bore (vertical sight reticle bisecting the rifle bore) your accuracy beyond your zeroed distance will be off. If you're a bench shooter you'll never be satisfied with the rifle's accuracy. If you're a hunter you'll take the chance that you'll only wound the animal and cause it to suffer needlessly...or you'll miss it entirely. The solution is to set up the rifle for maximum accuracy and change your shooting style to take advantage of it.
@risingawareness13
@risingawareness13 8 лет назад
Ah, thanks. Yeah--I kinda figured that stuff out and already set it up the standard way. I also figured the cant would make ineffective my bdc reticle. I'm going to be both bench rest shooting and hunting when I get good with my rifle (my first bolt rifle).

if you are not confident with "feel" use a torque wrench. But torque wrenches depend on continuity of materials. Sometimes there is simply no replacement for the personal touch when materials are having trouble meshing together. But todays quality products usually mesh quite well. Good video Rex.

I thought that I was probably the only person not using a level and fancy tools to install my rifle optics, until I saw your video. I agree with you that I I can tell if the rifle optic is level by shouldering it and looking through the scope you can tell if it a little off just by using this process.

I find its very handy if you are installing a scope by hand to hang a plumb line from the ceiling and aim at it through the scope. It will clearly show if the upright cross hair is actually perfectly vertical. To make a plumb line, you only need a piece of string and a small heavy object with a hole in it.
@patrickkelly9721
@patrickkelly9721 3 года назад
I do the same. I remove the bolt and find the plumb string through the bore. Then tilt the rifle if necessary to align the crosshair on the string and in the bore. Then the vertical line of the reticle with the string and the bore.

Im no expert but just a tip here on plumbing cross hairs. Just slide in a parallel piece of say, steel or similar that is a little wider than the height of the gap between the rail and the flat section on the bottom of the scope at the turrets. Something like a steel rule or thin bar. This goes in at an angle for clearance then turn the bar towards a vertical position until it touches the scope.Easy !
@danthecarpenter71
@danthecarpenter71 9 лет назад
When leveling a scope, I like to support the rifle on a table, aim it at a window, get the rifle as plumb as possible and rotate the scope until the cross hairs are aligned with the window edges. Easy squeezy! Warning, make sure the blinds are pulled first. You don't want to scare the neighbor to death and get the cops called on you for pointing a gun at them. : )

Hi Rex: I am a huge fan of your videos. There is a great deal you have taught me about long range shooting. I do not understand why you did not lap those scope rings in. The scope tube was obviously in a bind which is why it was sticking. That is a pretty expensive scope to bend up by not lapping the rings. Thanks so much for your videos.

I just started shooting and setting up scoped rifles. I can attest to the importance of setting your eye relief (distance from eye to scope) correctly. After going to the range a few times the scope seemed to be excessively sensitive to eye alignment and I almost got rid of it. Someone suggested checking my eye relief. After pushing the scope out another half inch the sight picture was much better and eye position was much less critical. That half inch change made a big difference in usability!

Hi Rex, TPS rings are designed so that all of the gap should be on one side of the ring. There is an index mark on the left side of the ring base. There is also an index mark on one side of the cap. These marks need to be aligned and then the screws inserted and torqued down on this side only (directly over the 7/16 nut). Then the second set of screws are to be inserted and torqued down on the opposite side. The gap is designed to be 0.020 inches. This design eliminates the twist of the scope that would occur if the two sides were tightened alternately.

Just a quick leveling tip. If the bottom of your turret housing is flat, you can use a allen wrench or something else that is flat as a gauge between it and the mounting rail. It's always been faster and more precise for me.

Thanks for this. I got my Area 419 base installed on my Remington 700 Police yesterday. I am going to mount my Nikon FX1000 tonight. I was able to test putting the rings on and I can spread them far apart front and back of base. I used a torque wrench on the base but think I will not use it when tightening the scope and top of rings down. Thanks again!

General rule: If the rings are of poor quality or the alignment is off, then lapping is helpful, if not then you don't need to lap :-) Most good rings are good to go right out of the box. Badger, TPS, Leupold, NF, IOR, etc...

Hey Rex, I wanted to see if you answered this question before asking it, but there are a ton of comments, and this one seemed closest to the topic, but as far "nice rings" not needing lapping, I recently purchased some Burris Xtr Tactical rings in Aluminum for my savage 110 tactical in 6.5CM, and I'll be mounting a primary arms 4-14x44mm FFP scope... Given your experience have you ever needed to lap those Burris Xtr Tactical rings? If so are there any physical identifiers prior to mounting that can help tell if lapping is necessary? (i.e. If the inside finish is smooth vs slightly textured) I hope that makes sense and that you haven't already addressed this issue in particular to the Burris Xtr Tactical rings. Thanks!

I haven't read all the comments so someone may have already said this but one way I've seen to leave a scope (only works on some scopes and guns) is if the scope has a flat part on the bottom and the scope mount has a flat part you can stick a ruler or something square between them and use that to level it with the base.

TPS recommends lining up the hash makes on top ring and bottom ring before mounting. TPS says that there will be a slightly bigger gap on one side of the ring after torquing down. That's the way it is designed. Now if you want to do it differently then that's on you. TPS also recommends that you don't lap the rings.

Another helpful reminder for TPS rings would be you have reference lines on both the bottom and top ring on one side only. Those need to be married up. Also I believe TPS recommends not doing the crisscross pattern, but tighten the side with the reference marks, then the other side. This keeps the scope from canting and you will end up with a small gap on the side tightened last. That Steiner is sitting in there pretty darn tight. I'd have probably lapped those rings for the $ you got into that rig. Very nice rig btw. AICS stock, Remmy (my favorite), TPS base and rings, and a Steiner to boot !!

you say to shoulder the rifle to check for eye relief but if you are shooting from prone position won't the position of your head be different than from sitting or standing? should one check eye relief from the shooting position that they most anticipate to use?
@gnmink

I found the easy way to test your scope to see if it is aligned with your bore is to use a laser bore sight. After you eyeball the alignment and before you snug it down use a laser bore sight to adjust the reticle just like you would to zero. Once you have the rifle zeroed you can run the elevation turret adjust up and see if the laser shits to one side or the other of your crosshairs. Do the same running the elevation adjustment down looking for the same deviation but in the opposite direction. The scope is in alignment with the bore if there is no deviation to the laser bore sight when you make the adjustments to your elevation.

A good quality base mounted on a modern factory rifle usually mates up pretty well. Some old military rifles may require some tinkering now and then, but if the actions are contoured correctly, there is no problem.
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 11 лет назад
If you plan on doing mostly long range shooting (400-1000m) a 20moa tilted base will allow you to zero in on a target at those longer distances through the centermost regions of the lens as opposed to looking at the target through the periphery of the lens which can result in more distortions. A 0moa scope base would be for closer ranges

Howdy! I would actually look at the TPS steel bases and rings. Steel is just so much stronger and less apt to streip out get damaged. The TPS are practically every bit as good as Badger and are much less in cost. Get shorter rings than I used here for use on your SWFA.

If dissimilar metals are an issue (i agree that they are, the have different rates of thermal expansion), shouldn't you use a steel body rifle scope? Seems the vast majority of modern scopes use an aluminium body. In this case, where do you make the transition to the steel receiver of the firearm? In the base? In the rings?

A good (and very simple) way to make scopes "level" is -- provided they have a straight plane below the turrets, which they usually do -- is to just wedge a straight-edged object between the scope bottom plane and the rail, and rotate the scope until there's no "light space" seen on either side of the straight edge. It's absolutely foolproof and absolutely correct, and extremely easy -- but again, it works only when there's a flat surface on the bottom of the scope.

Good questions: I was planning to shoot the same 168s BTHPs I had loaded for my AR-10. The 1:12" twist in the SPS doesn't overstabilize the .30cal 168s. The reduced static stability allows the bullets to maintain their tractability and they can push the transonic zone with less susceptibility to loosing their dynamic stability at the outer limits. The new Sightron FFP SIII? Havn't tried it yet, but looks like it might be a descent option. I will see if I can find one to play with.

Use a torque wrench you only think you can feel it exactly. Also never tighten the base of the ring set to your pic rail till you lay your scope in place to help parallel the rings with the scope tube if your not lapping the rings, thats why your not able to easily move your scope for eye relief. Go ahead and lightly put the ring upper on, no reason chancing a drop of the optic!!! Use a plumb bob or create a level line on a wall with an accurate level and lay a flat across the pic rail to level your rifle, then lay a flat across your top turret and you will be able to get back and set things extremely close. Begin snugging the base of the rings pressing forward and down while you do.

Answered my own question....hope this helps the crew out. 1. Measure the bolt diameter and divide it in half. Example: 0.700″/ 2 = 0.350″ 2. Measure the scope tube diameter and divide it in half. Example: 1.000″ / 2 = 0.500″ (Note: for 30mm tubes use 1.181”) 3. Measure the distance from the top of the bolt in the rifle to the bottom of the scope on the rifle. Example: 0.750″ 4. Add the numbers found in the formulas in steps 1-3 Example: (0.350″ + 0.500″ + 0.750″= 1.600″)

Should you not apply some oil under the base to prevent corrosion? Ive seen plenty of frames and bases come out with bad corrosion when soneone wants to change bases/scope. A bit of oil im sure wont create a waterbed for the base to ride on when torqued to spec. Keep up the good work. I absolutely love your videos. Maybe do a precision reloading series as well.

I don't want to argue, but I started mounting my own scopes shortly after taking up shooting. And not to save money. Leaving it to otherwise capable gunsmiths caused ongoing problems with improper leveling and scopes coming loose in the rings. Or oftentimes the opposite: screws would strip when I tried to swap the scope. It then cost $50 per screw to have them reamed out! The problem was the gunsmiths simply wouldn't take the time to do the mundane procedure properly. Probably because there was no money in it. Since then, I've always degreased every screw and hole (with methyl hydrate) thoroughly before applying Uncle Mike's Guntite (medium Loctite). And then followed the manufacturers' recommendations for torgue. Lapping the rings, though not essential perhaps is always a good idea - at least with 2 piece bases. I notice TRex doesn't bother with those steps so I won't argue, it but I would rather be safe than sorry considering the short time it takes to do things properly, as opposed to chasing down the reason for poor groups later. Anyhow, since I started to doing my own mounting, I haven't had single problem with dozens of guns. Incidentally, for those using Leupold rings, they recommend against lapping, especially with their QR rings. They told me that they don't want people wearing down the minute grooves on the inside ring surfaces, which were designed to increase grip.

lol - I don't mean to poo poo levels, but the reasoning for this is that although the levels themselves are usually very precise, the surfaces we use to measure off of are not always square with the rest of the rifle. Action contours are not always perfect, and especially scope turret caps are often not completely squarely situated. A level is fine, but you will have to double check how it works out, because it is often that the levels get you more crooked than when you started. :-)

I shared this info on an M1A vid and wanted to pass it along here. "Brad hole tee nuts" are a great way to add anything to your stocks like picatinny rails. Just google the term I have in quotes. They are strong enough for anything including bipod mounts as they have 1/4" of steel threads, and remain completely flush inside the stock. You can pick them up for cheap at any hardware store. The smooth flange will grab just fine when torquing down.

Cool rifle and scope...setup...I'm one of those guys you mentioned that strips every screw and snaps heads off...guess I don't know my own power...loL...tork wrench was a must for me...that way I can read what the manufactures tork specs are and do them just like that...then if the damn thing breaks I can blame it on someone else...makes me feel better.Lol

I never have and never will use a torque wrench on guns. It's either tight or lose and as long as it's tight enough so it won't walk out you're golden

Have watched every vid so far. I actually like your willingness to consider minutia in this endeavor. So I was pretty surprised you "eye balled" mounting the scope, and poo pooed using a level.

Hey Rex whats the minimum distance from barrel to scope that you should go when mounting?

Rex, I would like to see a review or know your opinion of the new 2015 Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-1 (MRAD) Reticle optics. I heard that the glass in the new ones are much better than last years Vortex. Thanks for your time.

…so, either way you go is fine...thus the main selection criteria remaining for barrel length will be your required velocity and rifle handiness. As far as twist, if you want to use 208s, the 1:10” is just fine - for ELR shooting you don’t want to go too tight and risk loosing your bullet’s tractability.

Well even Håkan, the creator of Spuhr says that the material doesnt matter but craftsmanship does. Most militaries probably use a steel base and spuhr mount, spuhr is aluminum. You will always have steel to aluminum contact. I had all steel connectors and the scope rings worked out loose during the winter on my 308. You should always check your screws before shooting.

One method I use for leveling the scope is looking through the scope into a mirror. I then turn the scope cant until the horizontal crosshair is level with a portion of the rifle that is known to be level, i.e. the stock height of the bore centerline.

I just want to add. If your going to use TPS rings. One of the reasons to use them is the way they are machined. You DONT tighten down both sides evenly. READ the instructions. Put the bottom halves on. Set scope in bottom halves. Set eye relief. Install top half making sure the notch in the upper and lower ring is on the same side. Tighten that side all the way down! Install screws on other side about half way in. Level the scope to the action. Tighten both screws on that side to proper torque with a TORQUE wrench. TPS rings are machined in a way that the scope will not rotate when you tighten one side down all the way and then level the scope and secure the other side It's one of the reasons I buy TPS rings. The instructions even state that the side with the notch will be against each other and the other side will have a VERY small gap. Read the instructions. NO other ring that I know of is made to do this. Not even badger. I won't pay money for the "badger name" when TPS is better and EASIER to use Read the instruction. If you want to tighten down in a cross pattern then get a different ring that isn't machined to .0002 tolerances

Nothing terrible, but some claim there are thermal expansion issues that could potenetially shift the rings if they are tight on one side but loose on the other... I don't think it would cause any significant shift in POI, but its just 'nice' to have it even.

Although its true that the amplitude of the vibrations are decreased in short, stout barrels, the frequency of those vibrations are increased. There are 2 ways to go. 'Conceptually', a shorter barrel often requires less load development, as the amplitudes are minimal, but the higher frequency makes it more difficult to get 'perfect'. A longer barrel often requires more load development, but finding that node and riding can be easier due to the lower frequency of the vibrations. Either works.

I personally feel that you should have Lapped the Rings before mounting that Expensive Scope on ! As you were installing the scope on I felt that there was some tightness between scope and rings even before putting the top half rings , a scope usually has to be able to somewhat slide and move freely on the rings or else your going to put a kink on the scope tube .... thats my 2 cents !!

Just curious ... you mount a $2K optic on independent rings without lapping or checking the alignment? Can we do this? When is lapping necessary? Does the Picatinny base eliminate the need to check alignment and lap? Or do we buy ridiculously expensive base and rings and call it good?
@zoidelux
@zoidelux 7 лет назад
with tps rings, they actually want you to tighten the marked side all the way first. so you should only have a gap on one side with tps rings. according per their instructions anyway

Hey T-Rex, hope the vacation was as enjoyable as the vids show. Quick question "sort of" in the domain of the scope/optics...a lot of ballistic calcs default the optic height at 1.5". My question pertaining to that measurement is, are they defaulting to a "typical" center of Objective Lens measured to center of bore. I know you'll probably get into that with a lot more detail in future vids in the series. I'm just curious since a lot of us are using 20moa bases and diff. ring heights.

Steven Segul, TPS designed their rings to tighten one side, level the reticle, then tighten the other side and their rings will not cant the scope. Good video and I agree with you on those leveling devices, especially the little level on the turret. I've seen scopes with reticles that weren't square with the turret. And don't beat me up I was just kidding about Steven Segul lol

Hey, any guys out there that need a spotter or something? I'm in Southern AB, don't quite have the funds to get my hands on a weapons system or peripheral equipment just yet but I want to keep learning and put into practice what this amazing series has taught me so far. So, if you need a spotter let me know! Obviously I still need to learn spotter/shooter team communication and all the other things Rex hasn't yet made vids for but I believe the foundation is very strong. PM me on RU-vid! :)

One way I level the scope is to use shims, feeler gauges, or even a deck of cards. I level the flat bottom of the scope to the picatinney rail by inserting the gauge, cards, or flat steel bar under the flat bottom of the scope and the rail. It works every time. I think it it better than using levels, as long as you have a rail on the action. This won't work if the top of the action is round.

Hey Rex, interesting to watch thank you. I would not have thought to locktite the rings to the rail. I am curious about what your impression of removable barrels on firearms are. I have Thompson Dimension, and am looking at getting the removable bridge mount that stays with the barrel and is supposed to keep your zero as one option. Another is to put a weaver type rail on the rifle and have a different scope for each barrel, e.g. one for 204 ruger, one for 223 and one for 308. I will be next year getting a 7mm08 or 7mm Rem Mag based on what I have seen from your videos so far to see how far I can push my marksmanship. How do QR rings go when taken on and off a rail, and what are you thoughts on this. My reasons for liking removable barrels is the way that our firearms licensing works here is I can have a rifle and several barrels/calibers more easily than multiple single caliber rifles, where we have to justify each purchase to the police/firearms registry. Cheers Shane Broomhall Hobart Australia.

Yeah, 1.5" is typical for most centerfire sporting rifles. Mine are often a little higher than that - my .338 has a scope height of 2.25".

What are your thoughts on lapping the rings and such? Some guys i work with say its mandatory. But ive seen a few guys along with you on here that dont do it. Id much rather not do that.
