Long-Range From London: British Airways' 5 Longest Flights

Long Haul by Simple Flying

With its main hub at London Heathrow, British Airways serves all six inhabited continents of the world. But, when it comes to non-stop flights, the carrier only serves five. The one exception is Oceania, where the carrier flies to Sydney, Australia, with a stop at Singapore Changi Airport. Due to the UK's central position between the western and eastern hemispheres, the routes operated by British Airways aren't nearly as long as other airlines we've covered in this series. Nonetheless, this video will examine this UK carrier's five longest non-stop flights offered over the course of June 2023, as ranked by straight-line distance.

All flights from London to Japan now take 14-15 hours.

I flew recently with BA to Tokyo, which is now 14hrs going and 15hrs return. As BA is not allowed to fly over Russia. Which fly’s over turkey and china going towards Japan and flys over the North Pole returning back to the UK.

Thanks for clarifying this. I was just wondering about this route(s) when I first saw the map at the outset.

The problem with very long flights is the plane must carry huge amounts of extra fuel which add many tons to the plane's weight. This also means more fuel per passenger is burned to carry the extra weight. Freight airlines stop in Anchorage to refuel so that they can carry more freight instead of more fuel to burn up. After about 4,800km or 3,000 miles, it's increasingly more efficient to stop along the way for a refueling.

Longest flight on BA was in 1992 and it was Detroit Mi to London Heathrow aboard a beautiful 747-400. It was always special to see the BA planes coming in for a landing in Detroit. They don't service DTW anymore as Delta seems to have that route locked down, as well as the connecting ability their code share partners.

4:02 Did I hear 747-400ER? I was under the impression that only Qantas ever operated those and they were created especially for them?

Just flew Santiago to LHR. 787, in J. Very good flight, with great crew. Not sure about the ying/yang seating, but it served its purpose. BTW correction, Qantas uses A380 on sin-lhr, syd-lax, mel-lax. Longest routes ( per--lhr, auk-lhr, syd-dfw) are 787.

I'm off to SCL in early March, fortunately in First ( I hate BA's old Club World cabins ). Where did you stay, any recommendations? We have booked the Mandarin Oriental.

Longest flight for me on a British aircraft was BOAC 1965 Entebee Uganda London on a VC10. A beautiful , quiet , smooth flight. The Chief Steward was a delightful older Cunard Ocean Liner Veteran. He and my parents had an interesting chat before we tipped the seats back for a good nap. We had departed at about 1:20AM.

0:28 BA no longer fly to NRT, instead flying twice daily to HND, since the UK was allocated an extra daily slot pair there

I do the #1 flight mentioned fairly often and it's a nice flight, works perfectly as an overnight flight leaving in the afternoon and arriving early next morning. I've never suffered any jet lag from the flight at all and always have a full active day after arriving. I put this down to the fact that at some point, longer flights are actually better than mid-length flights if well managed and actually help reduce the confusion of the internal body clock.
@espaciobarra
@espaciobarra Год назад
Can confirm: I've done SCL-SYD, LAX-HKG (continuing to BNE) and BNE-SFO. All of them are long undertakings but to my surprise I didn't have jetlag issues at all with any of them. I think it's basically a matter of ending up brutally exhausted after landing, so you end up falling asleep and ta-dah! You wake up the next morning like if nothing happened.

I took this flight early this month. Same jet lag non issue here. The flight back was horrible just in that regard.

The longest I was on isn't a flight they do anymore. Heathrow to Lusaka was a 10hr overnight flight on a Boeing 767 in '06 and '07. The return journey was a daytime flight. The return journey in '07 was around 11hrs for me because we had to circle London for about an hour in a long queue for landing. It was a particularly busy day. I had to get the first train from Galway, where I was living at the time, to Dublin on Friday morning. Then Aer Lingus from Dublin to Heathrow. At Heathrow there was a change from terminal 1 to terminal 4 and a couple of hours to wait for the flight to Lusaka, arriving between 6 and 7am local time Saturday morning. So, altogether, I spent about 23 hours between getting on the train in Galway and arriving at Lusaka. Coming back in '06 was even longer because my flight from Heathrow to Dublin was cancelled but there were plenty seats on the last flight out of Heathrow to Dublin. I booked an overnight stay in Dublin for the return journey both times because the journey from Dublin Airport by bus or taxi wouldn't have got me to the last train to Galway on time. So I left Lusaka on a Saturday morning but didn't arrive back in Galway until Sunday afternoon.

9:46 The longest BA flight I've flown was flight BA33/34 LHR-KUL vv (which is slightly shorter than LHR-SIN featured in the video). These routes are currently not in the network, suspended since the pandemic but I truly hope BA will reinstate it back soon. p/s I dreamt of BA reinstating LHR-KUL with a new tag-on to DPS with 5th freedom rights. Also, competing head-on with QF on LHR-PER and purchasing the same aircraft that QF is acquiring for Project Sunrise to compete with them on LHR-SYD and LHR-MEL.

They contacted us after the flight to ensure my wife was ok. Great people. Sadly their.internal South African flights have stopped.

Hong Kong from LHR was one of the worst flights I’ve ever flown. You really forget how good the Asian and Middle Eastern airlines are until you experience some BA customer service It was the most cramped A380 seat I’ve ever seen. Not helped by a huge electrical box in the footwell. Spent 11hrs with both legs aimed 20 degrees to the left

Love to know how long the flight is in distance and time for BA London to Tokyo with the Russia flight restrictions. I never understood why BA has such a poor network to Asia, you would think flights to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul Taipei, Jakarta, Manila and many cities in China would all be no brainers. Especially with many of these being major tourist destinations or very major cities in Asia.

They used to have Bangkok, Lumpur, and Seoul but they got pulled when the pandemic struck. They had even introduced Osaka in late 2019, but the pandemic ruined everything. If I recall, they used to operate to Taipei using the brand “British Asia Airways” but that became defunct I think pre 2000s or early 2000s.

254 - 262 is maximum a B777-300 ER operator should operate . . . the 300+ dense seating configuration (one or two classes having more seats than usual) on B777-300 ER should be dropped altogether, not just by BA but all B777-300 ER operators as well . . . as for the B777-200 ER that's a whole new story altogether & no one knows it better than Japanese operators of the B777-200 ER . . . B777-200 ER operators should stick to a maximum seating (dense configuration) capacity of no more than 306 seats . . . the B777-200 ER has always been & still is BA's workhorse for it's international long haul services, (after the B747-400 ofcourse) . . . however with time everything ages & so has the B777-200 ER . . . infact the B777-200 ER has aged gracefully, a saga that started way back in the early-mid 1990s . . . but now it needs to be replaced, starting with the oldest B777-200 ER airframe in BA's 777 fleet & logging the most flight hours . . . and speaking of apt replacement for the B777-200 ER what could be better than the B787-9 & B787-10 wide body jets . . .
