We're showing you the steps to prepare for long-term emergency water storage.
THE STEPS
1. Sanitize the water storage containers. For sanitizing we are using the formula of 1 cup of water to 1/4 cup of 6% bleach.
2. Flush the water storage containers with clean water after sanitizing them.
3. Fill the containers with clean water. Our well water is not chlorinated, so we are doing an additional filtration step in an effort to start with the cleanest water possible.
4. Add the Water Preserver Concentrate. We have chosen to go with a product that is specifically made for long-term storage. The amount to use is 8 drops of preserver per gallon of water.
Each WaterBrick holds 3.5 gallons (13.25 liters) of water, so we are adding 28 drops of Water Preserver Concentrate to each container.
Regular bleach can be used to treat stored water, but the stored water must be retreated every 6 months. (Details further below.)
5. Close the containers and store them in a cool, dark place.

WATER PRESERVER CONCENTRATE SPECS
* Used with tap water to store emergency drinking water for 5 years
* Each 0.73 fl oz (22 ml) bottle preserves 55 gallons (208 liters) of water
* Active ingredient is Sodium Hypocholorite 5.25%.
How is Water Preserver Concentrate different from regular bleach? The preserver is also pH balanced and contains stabilzers that allow it to be effective for 5 years.

LONG TERM WATER STORAGE INFORMATION
How to store water, on WaterBrick website: ttps://www.waterbrick.org/how-to-store-water/
SHELF LIFE OF REGULAR BLEACH
www.clorox.com...
"The active ingredient in bleach, sodium hypochlorite, naturally breaks down into salt and water. The rate of breakdown increases rapidly when bleach is stored in extreme hot or freezing temperatures, or when a bottle is more than one year old. Generally, bleach stored at room temperature (~70°F) has a shelf life of one year, but after that point it should be replaced."
LONGER-TERM STORAGE NOT RECOMMENDED WITH REGULAR BLEACH
www.clorox.com...
"Generally, longer-term storage is not recommended because diluted liquid bleach solutions are susceptible to degradation from a variety of sources. Increased temperatures, contamination and even light (that’s why it’s sold in opaque bottles) can cause the liquid bleach active to break down into salt and water."

I like waterbrick and have both wet/dry storage containers but their concentrate is just bleach, read the active ingredient, 5.25%. Great that you walk through how to keep your water for long term storage. most people forget about these details. The claim of other ingredients bothers me as I want to know what is being added to my drinking water and not vague claims of snake oil ingredients. Love the containers though!

Yeah that 5 year bogus claim is just for the bleach if unopened. Water needs to be changed every 6 months

Ok, great. Thanks for confirming my thoughts on efficiency as to the reason for the drops-first instructions. Opening after the treated 2.5 gallons will not jeopardize the effectiveness of the water preserver? I've read, "Do not open until you're ready to drink." I'm guessing that's not applicable if opening momentarily. Again, thanks for creating this content and sharing your knowledge and experience. I'm hoping more people are realizing they need to be ready in case services we've taken for granted for so long, are interrupted.

I have a concern about the "stabilizers" that are used in this product. Don't see the company has specified what they are. Here's what I found when researching this product. If this product needs stabilizers in it, it's because their bleach has a shorter shelf life or because they are using it as a marketing gimmick. My concern however, is that stabilizers also add another chemical to what you are drinking. Using cyanurates (for example) works to stabilize a 7-8% bleach, but it has also been identified as a carcinogen in high quantities. Keeping water safely doesn't require stabilizers. It just requires sanitizing it once and storing it properly... something you have to do with or without this product. The only reason to have stabilizers is if the product itself is unstable. If that's the case, that would concern me because products that break down often form other really nasty contaminants and are largely unpredictable if they are ingested.
@jtrourke667
@jtrourke667 2 года назад
Agreed, This "stabilizer" is nothing more than a form of concentrated bleach. Container prep is the key to long term storage.

Thanks... good info. I would suggest using a medicine dropper for the water preserver measured and marked for 28 drops or whatever amont you need. Also, please encourage the use of potable drinking water hoses instead of a garden hose. Many people are not aware of this need.

Yea i've never used anything like that. I fill my water containers with regular tap water thats already treated and store it in a cool dark place. I check on it every once in awhile and if I ever need to use it ill pump the water out into my Alexapure filtration system, or collapsible water bottles to be filtered through either a Sawyer squeeze filter, Grayl Geopress or any other trusted filter that filters out the nasty stuff. The Geopress takes out heavy metals, chemicals and viruses too. Stock up on a couple of their filters and keep them packaged. They store for 10 years.

Check your tap water chlorine level. More of the time there is no detectable chlorine by the time it gets to your house from the treatment plant

Thanks for your review on this product. Your review is one of the few, (or only) real review of this water preserver. I bought 5 gallon military dark green water storage containers. The directions on this water preserver solution states to put the drops into the container before you fill the water into the container. For me, that cannot be done due to me using filtered water from an Alexapure filter system. So I can only fill 2.5 gallons at a time. Do you think that the instructions to put the drops into an empty container prior to the water being filled, is to assist in mixing it altogether? I don't want to put the drops into the empty 5 gallon containers, then fill 2.5 gallons, close it, filter mother other 2.5 gallons, than open it to fill the remaining. Sorry for the long question but there's so many assumptions in this world of water preservation and not enough detailed instructions for newbies.
@wobblyotteroutdoors
@wobblyotteroutdoors 2 месяца назад
You're welcome. Thank you for watching and the thoughtful comments. Yes, I think putting in the drops first is to assist in mixing the drops with the water. For your setup, it might work to filter and add the first 2.5 gallons of water. When you have the next 2.5 gallons of water filtered, add the drops, then add the remainder of the water. That should still assist with the mixing.

Help please Hi I have 5 gallon collapsible polypropylene food grade water storage containers. And I have the Aquamira 2 part Chlorine Dioxide treatment. I'll be using city water from the tap. I have to treat it because in our area it's very contaminated. How do I treat the water prep the gallon containers the right way? I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach? Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals? Also let's say it can be used how do I start? Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks

Hello and thank you for this very useful and important video. I have a question about the sanitizing solution. I have just purchased the 3.5 gallon water bricks and a couple of the half size water bricks. Do I use 1 cup of water to 1/4 cup of 6% bleach per 3.5 gallon containers and half the amount of bleach and water for the half size water bricks? Thanks
@wobblyotteroutdoors
@wobblyotteroutdoors Год назад
Hi Flynn. You're welcome. Yes, you may half the amounts if you wish, but it isn't necessary. The idea is to have enough solution to get it on all internal surfaces. Another thought... After sanitizing one water brick, you can pour the bleach solution from that brick into another one to use for sanitizing. This would speed up the process and make more efficient use of the bleach solution.
@flynnsylvest257
@flynnsylvest257 Год назад
@@wobblyotteroutdoors thank you for these thoughts. My concern is about using too much bleach. I haven't used bleach for this purpose before, so it makes me a little nervous that I might use too much of it and have it leach into the water.
@wobblyotteroutdoors

Very understandable. It's good to be cautious and aware. After sanitizing, rinse the water bricks well with clean water. This will remove any remaining sanitizing solution.

@wobblyotteroutdoors Год назад
Hi Numa. We experience the same slight leakage around the spigot area when the WaterBrick is laying on its side. Unfortunately, I do not have a magic solution for this one. When not in use, we stand the WaterBrick on end so that the spigot is on top. Side note: We have not experienced leakage around the regular caps (ones without the spigot) when the WaterBricks are laying on their side in storage. During travel one time, one of the regular WaterBricks that was laying on its side, did leak around the cap. Not sure if we didn't have it tight when loading it, or if it worked loose during bouncy travel. Since then, we travel with the WaterBricks standing on-end, with the cap on the top. It's an easy, sure-fire fix. We still like and use them. 12.16.2022

@wobblyotteroutdoors

The goal and hope of the water treatment is that the water will be safe to drink straight from the container without doing anything extra. If we see any evidence of contamination after opening the container, we will boil, treat, or filter the water before consumption.

@wobblyotteroutdoors

An important thing to keep in mind, our well water is not chlorinated like 'city' water is. Our house water is filtered and safe to drink out of the tap. If we were working in a sterile environment, the water put into the containers wouldn't have the opportunity to be contaminated. We don't live in a sterile environment. While we do all we can to have the container and the water clean and purified, respectively, it simply is not a sterile environment. Any bacteria or other contaminate that finds its way into the container can propagate. That's the reason for the drops.

@wobblyotteroutdoors 2 года назад
Hi Frank. Sorry to hear that we lost you. As explained in the video, we are describing the steps we are now taking to preserve stored water against bacterial growth for long-term storage (5 years). The video is not about water conservation. The first water you see us pouring out was previously stored with bleach drops. CDC recommendations are to replace water stored in that manner every 6 months. The dog had her own water to drink, and later in the video she plays in the water hose stream a bit because she loves it so much. The second water we pour out of the Waterbricks is a small amount of bleach water solution used to sanitize them. That's not safe for drinking. Then the Waterbrick containers were rinsed out with filtered to remove the sanitizing solution. That water could contain good bit of bleach, so we wouldn't give it to our pup.
