Nestled in the scenic hills of Winnats Pass, the Longcliffe Mine lies dormant, harboring secrets from its past beneath a grilled shaft approximately 40 meters deep.
Above the old lead mine workings of Shack Hole Scrin and Long Cliff Vein, this mine offers a glimpse into the subterranean world that once buzzed with activity.
Just a few meters below the entrance, the shaft opens into a natural cavity known as Shack Hole Scrin, formed during a time when the water table stood significantly higher. This cavity, named after a mining term for natural open spaces, reveals water entering the mine about 5 meters down the 130-foot shaft.
At a depth of 15 meters, a side passage emerges, featuring precarious false floors held up by decaying wooden supports.
This passage leads to a backfilled area, a relic of cave diggers' efforts in the 1980s. As one descends, deep rope grooves etched into the shaft walls speak of the mine's working days when a winch system was used to extract ore.
The mine's proximity to the more famous Speedwell Mine suggests a historical connection, hinted at by disputes over air flow when the Speedwell canal was being constructed.
Despite Speedwell postdating Longcliffe by some 70 years, rivalry led to deliberate blockages in certain areas.
Longcliffe saw its main period of operation between 1750 and 1770, with intermittent work throughout the 18th century and a final closure in 1809.
