I am beginning to take your videos for granted... 🙂. Thank you so much for adding sources. Reading time! I am looking forward to your next episode. As a German, I am particularly interested in Romani history in Germany before the Nazis. Nazi atrocities against Romani people are of course covered in German schools nowadays, although at least in my school time decades ago we didn't learn a lot of details. But the picture before that appears complex and wasn't covered at all. I am getting the impression that German Romani were emancipated around the same time as German Jews, perhaps even by the same legal changes, but suffered from a different form of backlash. (Romani: didn't blend in; persecuted again due to the lifestyle clash nomadic/sedentary. Jews: fit into mainstream society perfectly; persecuted again after conspiracy theories from people unhappy to meet Jews socially without noticing.) I would love to have more detailed information to confirm or correct this idea.

The parallels between the Roma and Black Americans are uncanny. The experience of chattel slavery, the myth of their innate criminality, but also their outsized contributions to popular culture in areas like music and entertainment. I’ve learned so much from Florian, this is really great content! Especially since the history of the Roma is so closed over.

GOD thank you. 👏🏾I am African American who become interested in the Romani people as a child. Because there were rental houses in my neighborhood were Romani families would stay in for a season or so. Then as an adult I searched what history I could and I did find some of the parallels to American slavery and persecution is chilling. I have always found it laughable that "white" is supposed to be pure? and in the name of persevering that purity people of color are still throw into dangerous situations and living hells. And yet we have ways to remain gloriously free in spirit and loving in our hearts.

If you ask me White is evil. Not black. I’m Romanian, black and white. Live in America. Descendant of Romani, Africans, and possibly Jews. I know about the diaspora but never about my “white” half. I knew “gypsies” were seen as Other and not white which is why I always rolled my eyes when they called it white. But I never knew just how oppressed they were/are! In Romania I was abused in the orphanage. In America I’ve been segregated and subject to many racist things. And I now learned I got 900 years of Survivors flowing in my veins. Oh and I’m 29, so segregating was illegal.
@uninstaller2860
@uninstaller2860 Год назад
Yes it's infuriating that white is seen as pure. The origin is the same as blue bloods. It means you're so light skinned that your veins are visible. This is something the aristocracy believed in, therefore also the incest. As always in history, what the powerful do, that will be done by the populace. If the rich wear high heels, the under class wants to do the same to show status above the ones below. In the same way seeing white as purity became popular, to elevate themselves from other. We need to end racism!

I went back to the European country of my origin and let my kid play in the town square. At age 4 he knew nothing about different races or ethnic groups. Given free choice, he picked a group of Roma kids to play with. They ran around shared toys and he even let them ride his bike. They were enjoying themselves for hours. Towards the end of it, I had a ~12 year old girl approach me that was native to that country, also my country and she said to me, "excuse me sir, do you realise that your child is playing with those gypsy kids". I asked if she thought there was something wrong with that, and she replied "It's not a good idea and it's not safe for your child". Like some 12 year old headmaster. I asked her where her parents are and told he to go to her parents and not be such a B**ch. Sadly views like this still persist and I have no idea on how to eradicate it. But spreading the word on historical injustices and cruelty is probably one way, because a lot of people have no idea.

Thank you for telling us of this important history, it's an incredibly important knowledge that few people know and that has to be shared as much as possible. Your work is innumerably important. I can still remember the lack of attention when the Deutsche Bahn tried to demolish the memorial site of the Pojramos in Berlin to make way for a new train line. And I can also still remember how my ex-girlfriend complained about racism she felt by Croatians on her holidays, as she looked(!) like a Romani person, but then at the same time in a different context continued saying that Roma would exploit their suffering to get criminal benefits. It's just a perfect illustration of where we are...

Inspiring, you speak about the almost forgotten (or ignored) history of your people. My only knowledge about Romani people is the character of Esmeralda (who is often referred as the g**** girl) in "Hunchback of Notre Dame" created by Disney. I did not know that "g****" is a racial slur until this I found this channel. This is also the first time I encounter thr term "Romani people" and that they are of Asian origin just like me. I admired Esmeralda's headstrong and adamant persona, her goal was to endure for her people even if the corrupt Judge Claude Frollo despised (and lusted for) her. Her vocal rendition of "God Help the Outcasts" was brilliant and chilling. She was the only one who saw the "true beauty" of a physically hideous Quasimodo. She empathizes with his condition as a social outcast because of his defomities, and hers because of her race. Then here, the film possess a question - what makes a monster and what makes a man. From then on, as a child, I already knew the answer to that. Keep going! Spread awareness to the world about Romani people. Btw, you have nice hair and tantalizing eyes. 😅

Thank you very much for making this video! It is a heavy topic, and a heavy one to digest, but it is important that us white romanians are taught about this. It is very unfortunate that education in this country is so abysmal, it serves as a reminder of how behind we are, despite some people pretending we arent, and it is heartbreaking people here learn of such horrible things so late in their lives. I hope this isnt a tangent, your content is very inspiring. I have always loved learning about the different and diverse cultures of this country, my perspective has been mostly limited to Romanian Roma, thru reading and the people and friends i got to meet, but it is great to learn about the Roma outside Romania through your content. The history of the Romani people of Romania has always been hard to read, but its a must. Reading on my own is good but nothing compares listening to someone talk about their culture and people. Before modern times, Slavic people were enslaved many times over, which is where the word slave comes from, and even though Romanians are not Slavs, they are Eastern European, so I'm wondering if and how much this past of enslavement might have played a role in them projecting what happened to them upon a new vulnerable group of people. I can't confirm though if Romanians were also enslaved and what the historical context was, just a thought.

@@mauritsponnette When all this happened Romania was not a country, it was 3 pre-industrialized Feudal principalities, with peasant populations. And in 1 of them, Romanians didn't even have any power as a group (Transylvania). In the other 2, a large part of the population were Serfs themselves (indentured servants) & either way only the 1-2% ruling class made any decision. The 98-99% of the pop didn't own slaves or could give any opinion. There was no vote This was also in a time when slavery was accepted as normal all over the world. Romanians had to give a percentage of their children to the Ottoman Empire every year, to be raised M**lim & become s**ve-soldiers in their army... (and no, Romanians didn't buy or enslave Slavic people, lol. They were also not the only ones to have Romani slaves - it was just a given for the Roma to have this status, in those times)

So sad this happened to Roma people, how horrible and traumatic. I like how you present your story. My ancesters are from all over UP, India. They were poor, probably illiterate and were trafficked from India to other colonies in South America 150 yrs ago by the British colonist to replace the former African slaves by when that became illegal. Like the slaves they too were treated badly. What stuck out to me was that my ancesters were musicians as well.
