You confirmed what I already knew the second the credits rolled: I need a second watch. I was so engrossed in the story I know I missed so much symbolism and winks and nods. By the way, the cinematography is freaking amazing in this...I am so totally taken aback that this is his first feature film. I am definitely keeping my eye on Arochi in the future. He understands atmosphere in such an intuitive way.

I actually really enjoyed the film and I think the creep factor was top notch, but I do also think that the script could've used another draft or two. I really wanted to know more about Longlegs and that fabulous opening when he says "I've got my longlegs on today" was so promising and I feel like it should have gotten more a little more attention. Cage was pretty awesome in it regardless and I think he did a lot with what he was given. And whatever critical feelings I had about the movie were kinda forgiven with that scene of him at the end with the wink and the hail satan part. For a movie that had such a bleak atmosphere, that was the cherry on top for me.

(spoilers, just in case!) i don't think this film creeped me out the way it did for some people, but i was wholly invested in lee's journey throughout the movie. i've had conversations with my friends who think that she's coded as autistic, which i think is a fine interpretation, but i also think that her muted personality and stunted social interactions with others is due to the hold satan has on her. like when we get to the final sequence in the movie, carter's daughter (whose name i'm blanking on right now...) is fixated on the doll and does not react to the deaths that happen around her. if ruth made a deal with satan to keep lee alive, some paranormal magic or something would have to occur that would make lee forget about meeting longlegs. and i think despite ruth's deal, lee was still in satan's clutches because in the end, longlegs and ruth, the only (as far as we know) accomplices to satan and his murderous plan, are dead. and at the end of the film, lee is trying to protect carter's daughter from satan, but can't destroy her doll because her gun jams/runs out of bullets. despite saying they should leave, lee stares at the doll. i wonder if satan switched gears and was trying to reach out to lee for a new deal? i'm literally working out this little theory as i'm typing it so i have no idea if it makes sense lol but i think this movie was so good, nic cage did a great job, thank god there's a religious horror movie that doesn't involve the birth of the antichrist or something. thanks for the review! :)

I sat through an 8 hour training with no AC with about 100 other teachers and it's 107⁰ today. I understand! I had fun with this movie. Cage was terrifying! Perkins is so great a framing. He is so good!

Wow. Great analysis. I wasn't going to watch this movie, but a friend asked me to go. I am glad i did. I was surprised, but then again i was not hyped at all. So i had no expectations going in. I think that benefitted my overall experience in the end.

I'm so glad you pointed out that there are thematic similarities between The Blackcoat's Daughter and Longlegs. I have been thinking about it nonstop! Especially the complicated feelings children have about their parents entwined with the supernatural elements. I know that the marketing drew in a lot of people in who might not be big horror fans, so there's going to be some mixed reactions, but I'm so glad that an Osgood Perkins film is getting this much attention. I hope it means that we'll get to see more from him. He's been one of my favorites for a while now.

Here’s a theory I have. I think everyone is an unwilling participant who thinks they are getting what they want, but never had a choice since the beginning. While this may seem obvious what cemented this theory was when Lee was finally getting her explanation of the events that occurred in her childhood. When Ruth mentions she made a deal so that Lee can be saved, the shot clearly shows Ruth is tied up and gagged. How was she supposed to make that deal? I doubt longlegs was like “oh yeah let me take this gag off & hear you out.” Nor do I think there was a chance to say this before being tied up as she probably had no idea what was happening. I think all shots are very intentional in this movie. Also, having made the deal Ruth still kept the doll? That made me realize no one was ever in control probably not even longlegs, it was all Satan doing as he liked and no one could stop it from happening as it was a greater power than all of them sorta like god. Overall I actually thought this was an almost perfect movie. I’ve been watching horror movies since I was a kid so I find them hard for them to unsettle or scare me, but this one did a great job at creeping me out. It’s sad seeing such a divide on this movie. I did however avoid all promotional material lol. I like going in with zero expectations. I didn’t even see the trailer, I think a lot of them give too much away. I did think some things were a little too forced (like the codes, the way she set them out was a bit of a stretch) and setting up Ruby as the final girl just for Lee to be blindsided by it, like girl??? Cmon it was right in front of you. I have other comments but overall I really enjoyed!

Just got out of the cinema! I totally thought this was a remake of Blackouts Daughter (My least favourite of his films) through a procedural lens, so something like Cure or Fallen. Except really goofy and silly 😆 I enjoyed this one, I didn't get in the vibe of the atmosphere and found it very basic and easy to guess what would happen next but it's still gonna end up being my favourite film of his because it actually had some plot going on to pull me through it and took some bold swings which I perhaps didn't go along with all of but did appreciate anyway.
