When I was brought to live in the Potteries as a seven year old seventy years ago in 1954, Longton was a thriving town in which you could buy anything. On a Saturday, the pavements were so full of people that you had to walk in the road to step around them. It even had four well patronised cinemas, the ABC Empire; the Alexandra; the Focus and the Royal. Looking at the place as it is now on this video shows just how long ago 1954 now is. It was a different world back then.
I was born in Longton in the 50's and finally moved out of the area in the early 90's. When I was younger it used to be a busy town but it's so sad to see what it's become - absolutely shocking. The whole place looks like it needs completely flattening.
Born on the late fifties, left the area in 1987 to live and work in Brighton then later to Cornwall. So glad I left when I did . The whole city is depressing now .
Bevan's was the best shop in Longton. I reckon whenever the music businesses desert a town it's the last nail in the coffin. Look at Hanley, Newcastle etc etc. Longton looked post-apocalypse 20 years ago. It hasn't improved. Amid all this the Stokie folk remain cheerful and friendly. Miraculous really
9:11 Oh my lord what have they done, i understand it needed some paint and brightening up, BUT THIS! o.0 10:00 the UK has a Free Trade Agreement with Australia and Woolworths is still going strong in Australia. Im hoping one day it will come back to the UK and take up residents in the old store again.
Sorry I'm late with this one MM... busy time looking after the geriatrics 😀 I can't believe you walked less that half a mile from my place where there was a log fire and a tot of something warming awaiting you. Maybe next time, do bare it in mind. You finished up by the Crown Hotel, not a place I'd be giving any stars to on Trip Adviser these days but way back when, like Longton itself, it was a fine establishment. You then walked past the old Belstaff (now a global fashion brand) factory! We're not ALL about pottery here you know, shame the likes of Belstaff, and the rest, can't be arsed to recognise their heritage with some community support and spare cash! Until the next time my friend... keep'em comin' and cheers for now from a proud Stokie 🍺

Because it’s home. It’s where family live, where you grow up, there is bad and good of everywhere, it’s just what you make of it. Where do you live that’s so spectacular?
Looks like our town, council has just taken it back from private hands , there are hardly any shops , they will knock the shops down and build houses and bring some life back , but everyone goes to the large corporates for shopping . Covid was an opportunity when retail prices collapsed to buy back empty properties/ land at rock bottom prices . ( if your council missed that opportunity , kick them out )
Eh up Mark I’ve watched many videos of Longton and I should do one because I can remember it back in the 70s as a kid We used to live near by on lightwood road.. i worked all over Longton as an electrician for a local company based in Longton so we used to work on Beswicks, and surrounding areas… what a nice place it used to be until the pots closed down and out of town shops popped up😮 it’s such a shame what a bloody mess in big parts I drive through last week and to be honest market street is the worst it breaks my head how bad it is!! Fenton kings street what’s happened to it !! Burslem / Tunstall / Stoke / Hanley I don’t know not good 😌 I live out of stoke at the moment but my heart still belongs there.. I lived in Knypersley last that was lovely but I work all over the Uk and see this type of thing Is everywhere 😊l😮😮 Subscribed today and firstly saw Burslem good one mate needs pointing out Look forward to more Oh I watched market Drayton. Nice place but if history there 😊 Have s good one Regards phil
It’s a shame I live close to Longton and it’s gone to shit over the years. The hallmark/Thorntons shop was probably one of the last decent shops remaining but it got set on fire in 2018 and never reopened.
used to have some of the best nightclubs in the country back in the 90s in longton, folk used to travel from all over the country i dont think there has been a club of any kind in longton for years now
