This is rare footage of Lonnie Mack, one of the greatest Rock and Roll guitar players of all time performing on an early morning Television Show in Ohio probably around 1986 or 87. Lonnie recorded Oreo Cookie Blues in 1985 with Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Many, many thanks for posting this. I'm the guy sitting next to Lonnie, Scott Newell. This is from a morning show I hosted called "AM Cleveland" that ran from 1983-1989. I had never seen this recording--ever--until a couple of days ago when I discovered it accidentally here on youtube. Lonnie is the best: nice guy, great guitar player, terrific singer. I remember we rehearsed this for only about a minute before going on (the show was live).

I'm a Jazz guitarist, formally doing lots of country. Around 1982, on New Years Eve, I'm the lead guitarist with a country western band gigging in a bar in Port Jervis, NY. Its 2AM, just a few hard hitting folks left. In walks this guy with a couple of great looking gals. They sit down at the table. This dude comes up to the band stand and very politely asks if he could borrow my guitar and play a few songs with the band. I figured this guy was trying to impress the gals and knew nothing about the guitar. But, it was late and only a couple of folks were left in the place. Reluctantly, I handed this dude my guitar, an expensive Fender Strat. I walked off the stage and got a beer. IT WAS LONNIE MACK! Well the rest is history. What a night!!!!!

Vincent Smith , Same thing happened to me Playing the Hall of Fame Dance Hall in Bryan, Texas. Tall lanky guy came and asked to play my drums almost at closing time. Now the Late Great Mike Kennedy (George Straits drummer) played the set I’m still playing on and sure Played them Well. He was a Super Nice and Talented Guy.

Another big loss in music. Lonnie was a huge influence on so many guitarists. And what a gentleman.

Oh wow, just read the news that Lonnie Mack has passed away. Of course the main stream media will not mention it with all the talk of the death of Prince. For sure one of the greatest guitar players in the entire history of Rock and Roll and one of my all time favorites. A great talent who influenced millions of guitar players in this country over the last 53-years. I'm pretty sure he watched this video here which I posted back in August of 2010. R.I.P. Lonnie Mack!

Lonnie used to hunt on my Dad's property when I was a kid and he was a big old feller and a really nice guy .. My Dad used to call him 'Elvis' , I guess because he was a music star but I had no idea who he was then . I sure know who he is now . One of the best guitarists I have ever heard . Love his early stuff es[ecially . He is a pioneer of rock guitar

Mr Mack is playing an early to mid sixties Epiphone Texan, looks like probably a 64 or 5. These Guitars were made in the exact same factory that Gibson used to make all of its acoustic Guitars. This is exactly like a Gibson J45, except for the larger headstock and logo. I've always thought the larger headstock gives the Epiphone Acoustic Guitar's more reasonance. These are my favorite acoustic Guitars, looks like Mr Mack agrees. There are pictures of him playing more than a few over the years ! Mr Mack is definitely one of the Greats in my opinion and deserves a lot of respect

You never heard of him until now because he only had one hit record way back in 1963 called Memphis. A lot of the radio stations that play oldies don't play every record that made it into the top 20 for each year. Even though Memphis peaked on BillBoard at number-5, they just play the some old 10 biggest songs from each year that everybody knows. I guess Lonnie was just one of those GREAT ARTIST who just happened to slip though the cracks and never became a superstar.

So many questions... 1. When were newscasters ever this awesome? 2. Why have I not heard of Lonnie Mack until just now? 3. Where the hell did all those old white ladies come from? 4. Did you notice the host drop his voice after hearing Lonnie in the beginning?
@moviemagg

@lachute50 That's what I was thinking when I first obtained this video. I've always considered Lonnie Mack as one of the greatest guitar players in the History of Rock N Roll and one of the fastest as well. We could also ask why a guy like this only had one hit record (Memphis in 1963) as well. Then again Chet Atkins never had a lot of hits himself. I guess if you don't have a strong record company backing you all the way then you end up playing at the local Holiday Inn.

What do you mean by seriously? The studio version of this is a great track and should have been at least a top 20 hit record.
