Nah, Stevie wasn't like that - I'm not saying Lonnie wasn't great, but Stevie'd back anyone, and if they weren't great, he'd *make* them great. He was just that kind of guy. I miss him.

@@DrDespicable Yup. That's right. When Tommy and Chris did that interview about Stevie in 99', they said he would never allow there manager to book them as a headliner too anyone he respected, looked up to, or made him the musician he was. I remember they told a particular story that there manager wanted too book them and BB.KING, and they would headline, and Stevie told the manager, "no way in hell, that's disrespectful, BB headlines, and we'll open for him, I don't care if our album is selling more copies, BB.KING came before Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble, now fix it". I remember Chris Layton saying, Stevie never got angry, and that was the first time we had ever seen him just livid. Stevie was a damn good human being, too many people forget that about him. Take care man.

Lonnie use to visit down where my dad had his house boat in Aurora Indiana back in early 1970”s when I was little. I would sit around the fire pit with my mom and dad and all the grown-ups and Lonnie would play his acoustic guitar. Looking back now I didn’t even know he was famous he was just friends with all of us. Great times back then as a kid.

FireHorse11291966 Great story. Great memories. From all accounts, he was just a regular 'down home' guy. He met a friend of mine on the streets. My friend was a huge fan. He just said 'hello" & kept walking because he didn't want to impose on someone famous. For some reason, Lonnie stopped. The outcome was the two of them visiting on Lonnie Mack's porch, visiting & playing guitars. My friend kept up with him til he moved from the area. Thank you for sharing this memory of yours. It's nice to see it backing up what I've heard. My best, Moppet

Love hearing these two greats playing together. I was big into SRV in the eighties as a kid learning guitar. I saw an album in the blues section at the record store by Lonnie Mack which had SRV guesting on it-that combined with Lonnie looking super cool with his Bigsby equipped Flying V, and you know I had to buy it. Great album, loved Lonnie’s sound-No One sounds like Lonnie!

Lonnie didn't get massive fame because he didn't want it. He preferred to play when and where he chose and recognition didn't mean much to him. Jeff Beck played a tribute to Lonnie in his shows a couple yrs ago and if you're a rock n roll guitar player, that's all the recognition you could ask for.

I started playing guitar in 1961. I started by copying Duane Eddy (to simple but great to start with) then moved on to the Ventures (much improved but not what I really wanted) then came Lonnie Mack. I bought his album and copied everything he did. I was told he got his sound by playing through a B3 Lesley organ speaker with the turning flutes. Later on I tried this and it sounded exactly like him but the speaker amp was way too weak to push the sound out. If he did use this system he would have had to use a pre-amp to get more power. I don't see him using this system in any of his videos however so I don't know if it was true or not. But I know when I tried it it sounded great.
@patdug286
@patdug286 10 лет назад
Lonnie's vibrato sound comes from playing with Magnatone amps back in the day. They have the best sounding built in amp vibrato sound I know. Look them up!
@inquiry7
@inquiry7 10 лет назад
I remember this from Hendrix........Hendrix spoke to a Swedish journalist about the song in January 1968, saying “Well, that was one song on there we did a lot of sound on, you know. We put the guitar through the Leslie speaker of an organ, and it sounds like jelly bread." That was on Little Wing. I think after this the phaser/flangers came in which do exactly that and Waylon and Robin Trower picked up on that.
@bassjumpblues3631
@bassjumpblues3631 8 лет назад
+patdugas it comes from the "one off custom bridge / whammy contributing most of that signature sound to his amp"
@Walter-hg8rb
@Walter-hg8rb 2 года назад
@@patdug286 Lonnie's sound did come from the early Magnatone amps he used. It's interesting that his interest in the Magnatone amp actually originated with hearing one used by Robert Ward who was a guitar player from Dayton Ohio who is on the original 45 recording of " I Found a Love" by the Falcons (Wilson Pickett). If you listen to that recording carefully you can hear the Magnatone sound. Lonnie picked up a Mag and never looked back. I have heard him play my whole life and can honestly say if you factor in the playing and singing ability and the fact that he was 15 years ahead of anybody else, it clear that he alone created the roadhouse rock category. The fact that he is not in the R&R Hall of Fame is a travesty. I really miss being able to see him play live. Many have commented and I can verify, nobody has ever had a bigger sound on stage with just a guitar and amp than Lonnie Mack. He was one of a kind.

Everyone knows about SRV, one of the greatest axe slingers (along with Johnny Winter) out of the state of Texas. Lonnie Mack remains one of the greatest "lesser knowns" of Rock 'n' roll. He shows here that he could hold his own with the best of them. His '58 Gibson Flying V is nearly as famous as any other guitar including "Lucile" and "Brownie".
