This was an emotional episode seeing the opening with Ashley Johnson's Anna opening the episode gave me chills. It's the passing of the torch from the OG Ellie to the actress who is playing Ellie in the show. Ashley in those 5 to maybe 10 minutes powerful performance and knocked it out of the park. Also, for me here's what sets this show apart from similar shows: restraint. It's eerie, intelligent, carefully paced and most importantly it only rarely shows you the infected. This means that when an infected DOES appear, it's impactful AF.

I think the ending reflects a whole lot on how we're influenced by our past when making choices about the future. Ellie is tormented by the deaths of all the people she believes she could've saved as does Joel. Someone else in that same situation haunted by a set of different events might've made different choices. A simpler choice would've been to let Ellie live her life long enough before operating on her. Maybe she can pass on that immunity to her children. In which case all you'd need is her placenta to obtain the cells that would otherwise be in her brain. A rational way forward would require a rational world to prevail but alas this is not that world.

What I like about the story of part one is its unique take on humanity and its purpose within us as humans. It’s sort of a trope to have one person sacrificed to save the many. But this game subverted that expectation for me. Usually zombie apocalypse games/movies have a level of expectation that you have to make the “tough call” and let people die. Usually for your own survival or for all remaining humans to be saved. But movies like “Train to Bushan” and this game, broadened my thinking of the genre. Because of Joel’s actions, I realized… The fate of humanity shouldn’t rest on the shoulders of a single little girl. Like some miracle cure is going to help save the world from its problems. It’s not her responsibility. It’s everyone’s. Ellie dying won’t save humanity. People have to save their own humanity. A cure won’t give anyone that. People would still fight. People would still abuse power. Joel gave her a chance at life itself. To enjoy being alive. To find love, to have friends, to be her own person. Ellie, this character we’ve grown attached to, is worth more alive than dead. She means more to Joel than the world would ever care about her or her death. Even if her cure did save the people that were left, she’d be forgotten. This girl that thought she wouldn’t matter to anyone - because everyone she’d ever loved had either died or left - through Joel, got the chance to live and feel important. So in the end, to my own surprise, I think Joel was justified. Not because he took a choice away from her, but because it shouldn’t have been a choice a kid should have to make in the first place. BTW: thinking about it, those doctors didn’t even wake Ellie up and ask her for her consent. As far as Ellie knew, they would draw some blood and run tests. She might have guessed death could be possible, but the surgeons didn’t bother waking her up. I can only think that is because they knew they were going to go through with the surgery whether she said yes or no. So they kept her sedated and asked Marlene’s permission. Abby’s dad can fuck it. Sorry for the strong language but, man, he doesn’t get to decide for her.

I loved how all of the callbacks like Chef Boyardee and the five mile hike that Joel makes is his way of showing how much he cares for Ellie. It harkens back to Frank saying paying attention to things is how we show love. He was paying attention to Ellie the entire time because he instantly felt those fatherly instincts when he was first hired to protect her. He just buried it until he couldn’t anymore. The scene where he shows his vulnerability and openly talks about his suicide attempt was so heartwarming. He shows so much vulnerability that he wouldn’t originally show because that’s how much he cares about Ellie. It’s heavily implied that he contemplated suicide in the game, but verbalizing it in the show only to end with the “it wasn’t time that did it” was a good choice. And Ellie responding with “well I’m glad that didn’t work out” was perfect. That’s the closest they will ever get to saying “I love you”. Love how much goes without saying in their relationship. It’s that subtle dance between tease and payoff that really makes us chomp at the bit for every single interaction, clinging to every second. Fun fact: before the game came out 50% of the play testers without children hated the ending and wanted it changed, and all of the testers with kids understood Joel and loved the ending. Happy Naughty Dog stuck to their guns and didn’t go for the safer, more feel good ending. People still discuss this ending and how it made us feel to this day.

I mean the lie being awful is why Ellie knows that Joel is lying, but decides to leave it at his word. It wasn’t until the years went by that Ellie couldn’t live with the lie anymore, that she decides to take matters into her own hands to find out the truth for herself and has the opportunity to force it out of Joel where he can’t gaslight her anymore. Even though the lie might be more believable in the show, you can tell Ellie still knows Joel is not telling her everything that really happened

First off, this was, in my opinion, the best show to come out in the last decade, and the best adaptation of a video game ever. An example every other show should strive to emulate. They cut non-story relevant parts from the game to give us a better fleshed out story, with more relatable characters. The cast was amazing, though I had my doubts initially. I'm glad I was wrong. The Normies reactions were fun as always. Thank you for bringing us along on this ride. Suraj touches on a real good point that all of them dismiss too easily. The people in this world have almost universally gone over to kill first, and take what they have. How in the hell would you convince people that are determined to just kill you and take your stuff, a) not to kill you, b)believe you have an actual cure and are not just trying to trick them into lowering their guard so you can kill them, c) if they kill you before you can convince them the cure is real... then the cure is effectively dead, and Ellie died for nothing. This is what he's talking about. Never mind the idea that they can identify and synthesize an unknown substance with the equipment that is available in a post-apocalyptic world. Something that could not be done by actual experts in the pre-apocalypse world. Never mind the moral implications of "We didn't tell her, we didn't cause her any fear..." Which is complete horseshit. They didn't want her to even have a chance of saying no when she found out they were going to kill her because some dude "THINKS it COULD be a cure". The only reason to rush the surgery was to give Ellie and Joel no time to think or have second thoughts. There is zero guarantee that killing Ellie will lead to a cure. Even if it did, the second point applies.
@MrPicklerwoof
@MrPicklerwoof 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, I find the whole 'debate' a big non-debate tbh. The Fireflies throw up so many red flags - and the practical issues are so endless - that it's absolute madness to actually expect them to make a difference in this world. Druckmann has since said that we should suspend all those practical questions and just assume that they would definitely get a cure & that it would save the world. Which is bollocks. That's not how storytelling works - the creative work needs to stand on its own 2 feet and be perceived entirely by the observer. Not with additional notes from the writer telling us what to think. Ergo, Joel's actions are entirely sound. Perhaps not in Druckmann's retconned magical fantasy world, but in the real world they would be.

They didn't even wait long enough & went straight to surgery. The previous tests on Ellie was rudimentary because they didn't even have any equipment where they were keeping Ellie . I'm not sure surgery should've been the first action plan with the ONLY immune person in the entire world.

Marlene knew a different Joel from who he is when she see him again here, I think that is part of why she doesn't kill him. She may not be able to conceive of a Joel who gives shit enough to storm back into a building and murder everyone. She thinks she is going to sacrifice Eliie but what she is doing is trying to kill Joel's "Baby Girl". Much like Amos from the Expanse, Joe is "That guy". In the game I was so wrapped up in that final action sequence and the urgency of saving Ellie that the enormity of what I did, or we did I guess, didn't really hit until the scene in the truck as Ellie was waking up. I sat real quiet after that, and made peace with the fact that as much as I love the dude Joel was the bad guy and by extension I was complicit in his actions. Agree with Marketa in that Ellie should have had a choice but it needed to happen before, not after Joel's rampage. I don't agree with his lie but I understand why he did, sad reality is Ellie never believed that lie. She is too smart for her own good. That being said, it made the TLOU Part 2 hit very different for me, like a really layered experience. I hope they are able to achieve that with season 2 of the show.

joel was right simply because the fireflies were idiots and marlene was a weak (maybe not mentally but 100% tactically) leader who couldn't come up with a single coherent plan in any situation. in fact it was because of a firefly plan, a heavily pregnant woman was abandoned on her own in the woods fighting off infected that led to ellie being an orphan in the first place in my view. also i don't trust they'd have an actual plan for what to do with a cure once they had one (as you mentioned with production and distribution, which in our own experiences in the last few years we have discovered is pretty difficult before an apocalypse let alone after).
