Really solid video DJ. I enjoy the way that you use your experience in the unix/linux world to make comparisons and contrasts. Such as the item that you mention in your Wishlist. I agree with your take on the snapd issue...that the Mint Team went back and gave the User a choice now. And lastly a couple of suggestions on future vids...how about the comment you made about the Software Store that no one is watching...and maybe an elaboration on your Wishlist comments? Thanks DJ ... :)

Thanks Lee and I dunno if i want to comment more than I have on snaps, but sure could talk about concerns in general about code sources coming into Linux. Yeah systemd wishlist hehe...See the above answer to DSL's question I would like a new start on that one and would be willing to pitch in and help design it.

Hey DJ, Even though I have been on Mint Cinnamon for some time, I recently went from 19.3 to 20 on my main rig as a result of a boot issue on 19.3 that may or may not have been my doing. I decided to look at some overview videos again and came across yours. I must say I found it very informative and somewhat enlightening. Thanks for the great video and I'll see you soon on BDLL.

Thank you for the video. What does it mean that a distro is based on both Ubuntu and Debian ? Does that mean they compile the packages using the same exact gcc ? I have no idea how a distro is built from scratch ? Obviously there are no rpm files or dnf, or there is no AUR. Does Linux Mint tweak the kernel ? and if so, do they do it the same way Ubuntu does ?
@CyberGizmo

The way I understand it is Ubuntu is based on Debian, and LM is based on Ubuntu so the packages all roll up in LM. Do not know if LM does anything to the kernel or not, sounds like a topic I should dig into and find out. Thanks for asking it.

Thanks roger and yep i did a review of the desktop edition, the Cyber Security edition would take longer than a single video, but might do it sometime down the road.

Linux Mint is a great tradeoff, but I new interesting distro I found is Artix Linux (Archlinux without systemd). KDE 5.18, 368mb RAM used, very efficient.

There's also Devuan which is similar to Artix but Debian instead of Arch.

It seems to run faster than 19.3. I like it for that, but I'm not a big fan of the background photo choices. I want the 19.3 background set back.

With all the unsafe's off wich you said it's not Mints fault are you saying Mint can be hacked easy because of those unsafe's? And is that one of the reasons you hate systemd?
@CyberGizmo
@CyberGizmo 4 года назад
Not at all, Johan B. If an attacker can gain access to the protocols which are unsecured then it could be possible to gain root access to the shell, at that point its game over is all I said. Security controls on the firewall to prevent access to outside connections is always prudent. What I am really concerned about is normally in security environments we default to "closed ports" and yet the default configuration files for most of the services systemd manages are in the "wide open" state and that is what I meant. Yes, this is why I dislike systemd, its a large program which goes beyond the tenets I learned while working for AT&T Data Systems Group...each application or service should maintain a single function. I think systemd is trying to do too much and that worries me.

@@CyberGizmo Would you consider making a video going more in-depth into this topic? (Without showing things that RU-vid might crack down on you for). EDIT: I see you already made a video on Linux Hardening so I'll take a look at that as that may already cover this stuff. Thank you for the informative videos.

I enjoy the previous version, on btrfs, works fine with a very old low cost laptop. I use a lot snapshots to try a lot of things without risks.
