6:08 That cricket chewing on your skin reminds me of another European species of bush-cricket, Decticus verrucivorus. They do that too and in the past they were used to remove people’s warts (hence their scientific name) Thank you for another great video!

I have seen a fair number of those. They are common in the summer, but evidently not in fall. Great Orthoptera diversity in France. :D

The caterpillar is almost certainly Agrius convolvuli, one of the largest Sphingids that we've got here in France. Very cool. The adults are usually nocturnal or vespertinal, which is too bad, but a very good looking Sphingid, my favorite, in fact.

The slow motion parts were so cool, and the close-up of the beetle at 13:40 was really cute! I found your channel on Christmas Eve when I looked up harvestmen, and all the videos I've watched so far have been awesome! This has become my favorite channel :)

For anyone wondering about the difference between the Rod of Asclepius and Hermes' Caduceus: ... tl;dr The Rod of Asclepius, with one snake, is the correct medical symbol. It might be a snake just because his father's symbol was a snake ... Typical Zeus stepping out, slept with Leto (not me 😳), who would then give birth to Artemis and Apollo. Hera sent the Titan Python, a serpent/dragon, to kill Leto. Baby boy Apollo instead kills Python with some arrows. Apollo is then known as a dragon slayer, and a snake becomes one of his symbols. Hermes (the god of travel, commerce, communication, fertility, and others) invented a turtle shell lyre, which he then gave to Apollo (his half-brother). In return, Apollo gave him the Caduceus, a staff with wings and two snakes intertwined. Apollo was originally a healing god but his son Asclepius became the major symbol of medicine. His symbol became the Rod of Asclepius, a staff with one snake wrapped around it. As Asclepius is the god of medicine, this is the correct medical symbol. In his honor, non-venemous snakes were often kept in healing temples associated with him. The exact origin and meaning of the snake and the staff is unclear. It could just be a combination of his symbols of power, it could have some reference to snakes shedding their skin for longevity, or that medicine can be both a cure and a poison. Or perhaps the snake represents the disease itself being conquered. One interesting theory is that the ancient method for dealing with a parasitic worm was to wind it around a stick and twist the stick until the worm is wrapped around it and pulled loose. It probably would have looked like a tiny Rod of Asclepius 🤢 Most medical facilities appear to use the Caduceus. I took Latin in school and was even erroneously taught that Hermes was the god of healing. The reason for the mixup is some fool in the US army medical corps in 1902 got the two confused, used the wrong one for their flag or whatever, and then the Caduceus spread into modern usage. Interestingly, you can sometimes tell the type of hospital by what symbol it uses. Hermes was the god of commerce, not healing, and the majority of _commercial_ healthcare companies will use the Caduceus, because they care more about having a recognizable logo than an accurate one. Meanwhile the majority of professional healthcare organizations use the Rod of Asclepius, perhaps symbolizing that they care more about medicine than money, as opposed to their corporate counterparts.

Love those harvestmen. It's definitely a "grass is always greener" thing, but I think I like the little guys with short legs better than the daddy long legs variety. I can go in my own backyard and find multiple varieties of the long legged variety, but I rarely find any short legged harvestmen.
@GeneralApathy
@GeneralApathy 2 года назад
I can agree with that. Most of my favorite Opilione species have short legs. Short-legged Opiliones encompass most of the species with unusually shaped abdomens, strange protrusions (typically spines), disproportionate chelicerae, and UV-fluorescent exoskeletons.

This the first video, I saw someone catching a venomous snake with their hands
@GeneralApathy
@GeneralApathy 2 года назад
People handle venomous snakes more often than most realize. For example, Heterodon nasicus is commonly kept as a pet, yet it is mildly venomous. Of course, a Heterodon bite couldn’t kill you unless you were allergic to the venom. The snake in this video is nowhere near as venomous as the average viper. In fact, had I been bitten, I’d have likely only had a bit of swelling. However, the reason I was apprehensive was because there is a case where someone was hospitalized for six days after being bitten by a Malpolon monspessulanus (no allergies).

I use my phone to record and Splice (premium) for editing. I try to watch what I’m doing through my phone screen to keep the framing satisfactory, which isn’t always possible. It’s a skill that requires constant attention and improvement.
