Behavior on adult racer may be because you had the odor of a kingsnake on your hands. Covering the head would be normal if it doesn't feel it can escape.

The racer was caught on a different day than the kingsnakes, though I am familiar with the behavior you are referring too in Crotalus spp. Incidentally, I have seen a Masticophis flagellum ruddocki act the same way this racer did. So glad you mentioned this. :D

@@GeneralApathy I think you called it with the death feigning. It's a more widespread behavior in snakes than is commonly known, there's even a video of a Drymarchon doing it. They can't all be as good at it as Heterodon.

Found your channel at 2am. I truly enjoyed it having breezed through your entire shorts library before starting in on the videos. They remind me of growing up in Maine (where we have mostly Milk and Ringneck snakes in addition to garters)

I wondered what your would do if you encountered a rattlesnake. I get nervous every time you flip over a rock.

I really like your videos! How long would you say you were out looking looking for snakes, to make this video? All I have in IL is garter snakes

Thank you. It took me a few days to shoot this video. Illinois is home to over 30 species of snakes by the way.
