My Ryobi P737 inflator and tire pump was getting hot and not moving any air. So I've decided to tear it apart, see if anything's broken, and check why it started failing quicker than I expected.
I've included a teardown of the pump, a look inside to see what makes it chooch, and a DIY replacement fan that you can 3D print if your motor has also torn it's cooling fan to bits.
Thingiverse Link to STL: www.thingivers...
GitHub: github.com/Inh...
All of this is equally applicable to any of the 12v DC tire inflator air pumps. The design for the valves won't be radically different on any of them.
02/25/2021 Update: I've also got a teardown of the digital model up: • Diagnosing a Dead Disp...
The display was electrically DoA (which is fixed but left it uncalibrated) and the fan managed to destroy itself live.

I just opened mine today! All my fan blades blew off like yours but my piston actually cracked in half. Gonna JBWeld and send it.

Yep, probably over-heated after it stopped running the cooling fan. Mine certainly was but the compression had degraded so much it was near-useless in addition.

Excellent! Thank you for taking the time to disassemble this unit. My hose just blew out, and I'm sure it's due to the heat and me being impatient and ignoring the duty cycle. I was going to replace the hose but may just purchase the updated pump; these really come in handy in a pinch if your tire is low (even though it takes forever!). I'll be watching future videos-good luck!

Thanks for the teardown, though it confirmed what I suspected already, that it is more or less of a joke with single-digit CC's displacement, plastic parts, and open sintered bushings, no head heatsink, basically made as cheaply as possible besides the molded casing. There is a certain satisfaction in repairing things, especially if you can make them better than new, but in this case even if we assumed it was as good as new again, it simply was not worth the bother. It is strange to me that manufacturer aren't making larger inflators, thinking we'd all like to wait several minutes just to inflate a car tire, when a bigger motor and 5X larger cylinder would not have cost them much. I know Ryobi has the P731 but it is also an example of a ridiculously small compressor in a fancy plastic case. Nobody wants to pay for or drag around their tanked air compressor just to inflate things, instead they should make something similar to a Viair 88P but with an 18V motor and integral battery shoe. This is technically possible as the 88P is only 20A @ 12V so a similar HP motor at 18V would be well within the current capacity of the battery. They could even one-up it and use a brushless motor, probably get the current down to 10A which is sustainable.
@PCBurn
@PCBurn 3 года назад
True. My car has a far superior German compressor at the same size. I would love to have a maybe not quite as small battery compressor that isn't this cheap a build as well. Might have to look around for one that'll accept 18v and make a power shoe for it.

The fan in my Ryobi P737 is intact but loose inside the housing as though it had never been installed on the shaft. The large gear is not straight so I think the center of the gear has been worn down. Maybe I'll keep this to use for another inflator if other parts need replacing.

I have a new one it blows HOT AIR and the hose gets very hot to touch after 3-5 mins was yours the same?
@PCBurn
@PCBurn 3 года назад
Yes. I'd make sure the fan's intact (you can see it through the grate). You can check the duty cycle in the manual; I believe it's 5 minutes before you have to let it rest and that should be enough time to top up a car tire or inflate a small tire. It will get a bit hot even if it's operating correctly during that long a run. Unfortunately the manual doesn't give any indication of what the tolerances are. I never actually looked at it prior to taking it apart. It's entirely possible it was a mold defect on the fan that caused it to blow apart. So good to make sure it's all okay if it's new.

@insanitology

The reason that the fan may have self destructed is because a piece of solid debris got into one of the side vents. It got caught between the fan blade and possibly the side wall, which cause the fan to fetch up. A nice hack for that might be to install a bit of filter material that you might see on a lawnmower air filter. Cut and glue it to the inside of the vent. Make sure it's clear of any moving parts, and keep in mind that it's something you'll have to clean. I don't know if it would work for certain, but it's an idea worth exploring.
@PCBurn
@PCBurn Год назад
Sure, that'd be a good preventative measure. You could also use plastic mesh screening that is sold for windows.
@insanitology
@insanitology Год назад
@PCBurn! that's a much better option for less air restriction. I was thinking about using silicone lubricant for the piston ring. I just think that a caliper grease is great for the gears, but it may affect the output of air from the chamber as it would take up volume inside. What do you think about that?
@PCBurn
@PCBurn Год назад
As long as it's compatible with the plastics and stays in the pathway it'd probably be fine. I'm not sure what the OEM.was; it looked different in both models.

I burned up one, was going to try and fix it, but heck at $20 I just bought a new one. What I hate about these is they are "trigger happy". You just touch them and the trigger goes off, annoying and startling me. I want to add an 'enable' switch, and heck it also needs to keep the trigger on, I use a ziptie for that. I'd pay another $5 if they had these features. So basically it needs to add a off-on-trigger switch on it.

Had mine apart today. Fan was intact but moved up the shaft and bound against the bottom of the motor- added a spacer to prevent this from happening again. The bigger problem is that the center of the large gear is worn, causing it to get out of sink with the motor drive gear. Almost like a bushing would keep it at 90 degrees-any suggestions?
@PCBurn
@PCBurn 3 года назад
The center of the metal (eh.. cast? iirc) drive gear? That's impressive. I'd think the part had a flaw however it was made. I guess if it's the center opening in the gear that's worn you could open it up further and press fit a bearing or a bushing in there. It'd have to done to a decent tolerance though. I would probably make a hash of it as I have a drill press that's wobblier than the one Bad Obsession motorsport uses. But that's what I'd try. Incidentally caliper grease is needing a refresh after a year. I'll be trying the next probably-won't-destroy-the-plastic grease soon.
@joco6fo170
@joco6fo170 3 года назад
Thanks for the reply. The hole in the piston was worn out of round too, but I was able to sleeve something over the post for a tighter fit. Could the gear on the motor have shifted? Assumed the metal shavings were from the gear center and teeth (some looked shiny/worn). Btw I had access to a synthetic lubricant with Teflon that is supposed to be good to 500 F- seemed to work well

@@joco6fo170 Glad it went back together. I don't recall the tolerances being particularly tight except for the air piston cylinder. I could be mis-remembering though; it's been a while!
