[Fixed] Ryobi P737 Air Compressor Rattles and Low Airflow

In general, a Ryobi P737 battery-powered air compressor will rattle due to the cooling fan inside disintegrating. You can remove the screws and split the unit in half to shake out the pieces. There are no replacement fan parts sold to the best of my knowledge, and it would be pointless anyway considering these tools are only priced at about $20. Just don't overwork it at any one time so that it won't overheat.
I've found that these units will lose airflow or compression when there is a lubrication issue. Once the unit is split open, remove the e-clips (2) from the gears and slide out the piston for the pump. Clean it out with q-tips and denatured alcohol and lube the piston rings with general purpose grease. Do not get any on the face of the piston.

No replacement fan found online. Not worth it anyway due to a new unit costing $20.

when manufacturers make bad products, our landfills are getting bigger. Some friends ask me why I spend a lot of time repairing an inexpensive thing. My answer: I want to save a tiny space in a landfill. I appreciate the person to make this video, I will grease up my inflator this weekend. To save this planet earth we need better engineers. Thank you, buddy.🙂🙂🙂

Someone in Rome repaired a broken teapot to "save the planet" in 225AD. Whew! Not being wasteful is one thing but saving the planet isn't humanly possible or necessary.

Only use synthetic grease on plastic/pvc parts to prevent degrading the material.

Just bought a new one on an impulse. Now after watching this I think I will tear it down and lube it.

Every... Single... Time. I have had this experience with zero other Ryobi tools and it's annoying as fuck. It's so damn loud scares a shit out of me almost every time lol

One of the case screws is longer than the others. It's the top left one, as you disassembled it. Presumably mixing the screws up will give you two points of inadequate hold.

Mine was making a rattle/grinding noise so I was convinced that I had the same problem as you. So I took it apart and found that nothing was broken or loose. Then I performed a thorough clean and lube job. It is now quiet and working well. I have concluded that the noises were from air escaping explosively from around the piston seal. Thanks for the video. It was VERY helpful.

Followed your instructions, the rattle is gone and it does have much improved compression and inflation results...I know the unit is cheap, but I should get another summer or two to inflate pool floats. Really like frugal fixes. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the vid. This fixed my issue. I guess the lube got used up in the piston area causing resistance and noise from the gears working harder. I was surprised to find that my fan was intact. After adding new grease it works amazingly better. Possibly better than out of box.

Awesome video, was ready to toss this inflator and buy a new one but checked out RU-vid and found your vid, I did exactly as you stated and it works great again, thanks and keep up the great work!!

Instead of disassembling that to add grease, use grease with a thinner that evaporates. That way grease gets where it needs to, then thickens… They call that chain lube… and it's aerosol, with the tiny straw tubes things. Those should reach through vent holes, so this entire operation doesn't even need to happen.

Great video! I was just going to get a new one for $20. I only use it for the kid toys. Again Thanks! I always take things apart before tossing them. I will fix this one. My Issues was just lack of lube.

Great video and instructions. Thanks!. I removed just the slip lock ring on the big gear and removed the whole assembly. My plunger was a little oily so I only used a little machine oil on the back side of it. The gear assembly was bone dry and that was likely causing my rattling as the gears overheated. Greased the gears well, and all rotation points. Added oil to rotation point I couldn't get grease to. Also used WD40 into oil port on motor and a little into the motor coil area. One screw near the air gauge was longer than the rest and kept giving problems (coming out and going in) so I replaced it with the shorter length. My fan was in good shape, no damage there.

The one long screw goes in the rear top hole by the Ryobi name. I marked it with a sharpie for reference.

Great video! Do you happen to have any experience with replacing the hose on this model? Trying to find a replacement hose but I'm unsure how the hose attachment is threaded on there.
@PFab
@PFab 3 месяца назад
It's crimped on. Metal collar.
@donsmith9478
@donsmith9478 14 дней назад
You could attach another hose to the original hose by cutting it in the middle and using a 1/8 inch hose barb to connect the old with the new. You would need a couple small hose clamps.

Those "C" clips are best refitted by squeezing them back on with a pair of pin nosed pliers.

If you’re talking about the small e clip, i used 1/8 inch and it seem to be holding but i think it might be a little small so you could try 3/16 inch one.

Mine is starting to smell like burnt rubber when using it to inflate one tire. I wonder if this would fix that problem too?

I had the same issue, I found out the little fan blade inside came off, its used to blow air over the motor. It then over heats the motor if its not attached.

I thought, why don’t I ever register my warranty? Because to ship an air compressor to makita is worth a lesson in tool repair? Idk lol omg ffs!
