Mortise and tenon joinery begins with marking the locations of the mortises. The mortising jig relies on centerlines to locate each mortise. But, it's a good idea to mark out the full mortise for a visual reference. Follow along to see a few tips and tricks to marking the mortise locations accurately.

Why would you not want to measure in off the face of the rail (as opposed to marking centerline) the same distance you were in on the style, in case there is any variation in thicknesses? Wouldn't this more easily lead to a flush face surface, even if the backs are slightly off?

Hi Shane. Yes, as long as your rout all of the workpieces with the face in the same orientation, then you could just measure from the face. We agree, that is definitely easier. The only advantage to trying to center as close as possible is in case you accidentally rout on the opposite face with one of your workpieces. Which in case you wouldn't be off enough to notice if the mortise is close to the center. Thanks for the question!

Why not set up once and use those markings on all 8 places?

It seems redundant to mark the face of each piece with an "F" since you already lettered each joint on the face side. Plus, marking every side of every mortise is really a waste of time. Just mark a centerline of each mortise on each piece, run a test piece on your jig and cut all the mortises. As long as your jig doesn't move, every mortise will be the same.

Andy, you are correct. Centerlines are all you need, along with some way to indicate the face of each workpiece. We took the long road here so we could better explain how the jig works and to avoid confusion. We appreciate your comment!
