I've just come back to this game after a few years and can agree with the pros and cons. One solution to the concentration and length issue is to play it over more than 1 session - if you can leave it set up. I'm doing this with more games and find it works - you play for an hour or until you finish 1-2 quest cards, then come back fresh another time to finish it off.

Came alive for me when I played with Easy mode. Less frustrating, much more fun!

It's true; this game is not light in any regard, but it does start to even out with more experience. As stated, the true richness of the game comes through when you add the expansions. You don't have to buy everything, but a single small box expansion isn't going to cut it either, as they only add 1 hero and 3 new player cards from each sphere. Most of the cards in these expansions are dedicated to the new missions -- which is great -- but plan to buy the whole cycle (6 small expansions) if you're interested in putting together your own decks. That being said, the core set does not feel like it's lacking until you've played it for a while and you want to branch out. Definitely buy the core set alone first and see where the game takes you before deepening your investment.

The storytelling got a lot better since Heirs of Numenor. Now you get about 1/2 pages of story to read before and after completing the quest. Quests themselves still feel fresh, the designers of this game are still managing to get new twists into the mechanics. I love coops and this is by far my favourite, excellent deckbuilding, great mechanics and amazing theming and artwork.

One other thing I would point out about this game after recently getting into it: The third quest in the core set is SIGNIFICANTLY harder than the others in the set.

The game has been elevated simply because Jen was moved to enhance the review with her take. I agree that this game definitely captures the fantasy feel of adventuring the world of Tolkien. I also agree it takes some time getting accustomed to the whole thing and how it works together, but by golly I am rewarded with a terrific Tokien experience. I have only played 2-player, and we only had the core to begin with, (we have since purchased the other packs), but of the 'investments' we have put into this game, I do not feel let down with it's return. Howard Shore's movie score playing in the background is elemental. Good Review!

Nice Review! I picked this up at PAX Prime this year with a couple of expansions. I generally like a game that I can just pick up and play, but with this one I definitely enjoy taking the time to build the decks. They really have done a great job making the deck-building feel exciting and accessible. The first few times I played the way they recommend, with the 30 cards, and I was a bit overwhelmed by the difficulty, but once I started building my decks, the game became a fun and engaging challenge. And a perfectly timed Gandalf is such a satisfying play. The theme leaps off the cards. And the art is super - as Jen can attest. I really recommend this game, especially for LotR fans.

If you only have the core set, limit yourself to 30-35 cards decks TOPS. That solves the problem. The 50 cards decks are for when you get the expansions.

It’s a lot like MtG for me in the sense that it took quite a long long time to really understand it. I spent MONTHS learning MtG to the point I felt I really understood the phases and the resolution of cards, etc. This game is very similar and it’s good you mention the “investment” necessary. But I think like MtG it’s turning out to be one of the greatest games I’ve ever experienced. You’re just gonna have to invest the time (and money) to work your way through subtle rules questions as they arise through your first umpteen playthroughs. But once you break through that you’re gonna have a blast!

About the time thing... It's important to say that each adventure has its own length... The 1st one of the Core usually takes me no more than 20~30min to beat... But the 3rd one really takes more time...

Good review. I prefer Middle Earth Quest since it's more epic, but both games deliver a very different game experience.

Between this one and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, which one would you choose?
@rahdo
@rahdo 9 лет назад
TheGrooves the gameplay here is richer, i'd say. if pathfinder didn't have a shelflife for advancing characters i'd probably go with it, but as it is, LotR is the winner for us

+TheGrooves My friend and I bought both and ended up returning Pathfinder as we found it to be a bit lacking. The only thing I think it has going for it is the character persistence but the game seems ridiculously easy, in turn making it feel very repetitive, and for me the game seems to have missed a few good opportunities with its RPG-like structure. In my mind it felt only remotely close to an RPG in the way that characters level up. I thought it would've been nice to have the character's start witha static hand of cards.For example, a ranger will have to choose one gear, one weapon and 3 random whatevers to start with. The weapon's and gear could've been static, as in you do not dispose of them to do extra damage, nor do you discard them after taking a hit from a monster. They could've added a different HP system rather than having you discard your cards. The fact that monsters die with one hit if you succeed a check seemed silly to me as well, and too easy. In LoTR The monsters have their own HP and they do not "hide" from you after every turn if you fail to kill them, (unless the card says for them to do so like the Wargs in the core set.). Cards like shields or armor in Pathfinder could've have something on the text like "discard after 3 blocks against the enemy" meaning that the shield or armor broke. Little stuff like that would've made the game a bit more complex, in-depth, and more RPG-like at least for me. I have never played any pen and paper RPGs, only video game RPGs but I have a general idea of how they work. I have never played any tabletop CCGs but I have played a handful of them released on Windows. I ended up preferring LoTR because it feels better put together. It is challenging but not in a frustrating way. The odds feel like they are constantly stacked against you because of all of the negative effects from enemy cards, and shadow effects, which in turn makes winning more satisfying. It is much more strategic, and also has an element of luck like Rando said since sometimes you feel like you're doing great and then the encounter cards start ruining everything. You'll constantly be at the edge of your seat. I know I am replying 6 months too late but I will still say this in case others read it; If you still don't know which one's you'll like best then I suggest buying them both on Amazon, trying them out for a few weeks and then returning the one you don't like. I believe you will have a one-month window for returns. They will reimburse you all of your money but they deduct the shipping cost out of it. P.S. LoTR has expansions called "Saga expansions" which cover the events of The Hobbit, and The Lord of The Rings, in which they include a new game mode called Campaign mode which adds persistence to your playthroughs. Characters get buffs and debuffs and if one of your heroes dies you must decide whether to press onwards without them or start over.
