28:28 This is not legal, because players can't interrupt staging (meaning Sauron commiting his forces to the quest) with "Action" effects. Players can interrupt staging with "Responses" though, as long as their trigger conditions are met (for example "A Test of Will" could have canceled that When revealed effect)
28:39 Forgot to use Thalen Power to deal 1 Damage to all enemies revealed in the Encounter Phase if he's committed to the Quest... So those Orcs Should have taken a Hit because they have no defense and now have 2 Hit Points remaining

I'm really glad you got to this one; it's a phenomenal game whose claim to a spot on any fantasy fan's game shelf is undeniable. The quests offer a rich variety of challenges, and once you add some expansions there's a lot of depth to the deckbuilding, as you seek to target your deck for the specific quest at hand. The game truly embodies the gravity of the heroes' trials in Middle-Earth; every hit to HP and threat is potentially disasterous and there's a ton of strategic and tactical decisions to be made if you're going to have any chance of survival, no less achieving victory! Combine this with outstanding artwork based on the books (rather than the movies), and you've got a hall of fame card game for solo and group play that you can enjoy for years and years to come.

i seriously love this game, but i still need more expansions. i only have one, and i'm still having a hard time beating the third quest in the base game.

Dul Goldur is still hard with all the expansions.

Expansions make the quest a lot easier, if you buy the right ones. It is still difficult to beat solo, but with two players with well built decks you shouldn't have a problem. Of course card draw can still ruin your day. The increased card pool is the reason FFG brought out the Nightmare variants for these scenarios; now they are seriously nasty.

That's the problem I have with this game. I only recently bought it and I'm learning to play but I forget to do things and find there's so much to remember. I think it's a great game though and hope I get better at it and hope remembering things gets eaiser too! :)

Addition to the comments: The orcs would take the damage from Thalen regardless if they have armor or not. Armor is only used when performing combat.

Do surges and doomed effects trigger when a card is revealed during setup? I thought those only triggered when they're drawn from the encounter deck during normal gameplay. Just wondering, I love the game but have only played a few times so I'm still hammering out the rules.

On your first turn, you can't trigger the "Action" of Self-Preservation right after the "When revealed" effect of the Dol Guldur Orcs. That's because during the Staging Step (revealing encounter cards from the encounter deck) of the Quest Phase, players CAN'T tae any action (see how that step is red-colored in the Round Summary provided in the rulebook). The players have to wait for next "action window" to play actions, which is set right after the Staging Step, before resolving the quest. This is tremendously important, because if you had as the second card during staging step a Treachery card which says "Deal 2 damages to each exhausted character", well, Glóin dies and you can't do nothing about it. You are right though to add resources to Gloin resource's pool right after he takes the damage, as his ability is a "Response". Responses resolve as soon as their triggering conditions are met, which is the case here. Knowing when you are able to play an "Action" is a VERY important part of this game.

Just to clarify. During the Staging Step of the Quest Phase, players can't take any Action (like Self-Preservation), but they may still strigger responses. That's what you did with Gloin. That's also why you can play an event like "A Test of Will", because it's a response.

Paulo Renato at 26'45, he commits his characters to the quest. At 27'57, he reveals the first card of the encounter deck, resolves the When revealed effect of the Dol Guldur Orcs and the Response or Gloin, which is ok. Then he exhausts Self-Preservation at 28'25, which is not legal, because players can't interrupt staging (meaning Sauron commiting his forces to the quest) with "Action" effects. Players can interrupt staging with "Responses" though, as long as their trigger conditions are met (for example "A Test of Will" could have canceled that When revealed effect)

Escape from Dol-Guldar is actually pretty tame when compared to some of the quests in the most recent quest lines. A couple of the ones from The Hobbit put it to shame as well.

when you randonly pick heroes do you then make deck that contains only cards of thoose sphere of influence or from all so if you are lucky you get a lot of your cards

+Eiidjrk Udjdj you can build the decks however you like, but yeah, you should match cards to the resource types your heroes generate or you're going to screw yourself :)

rahdo i have a question: at the first round u buyed self preservation for 1 resource although the cost is 3. I just didnt understand that, when i play i interpretate that as the cost

I thought locations act as a buffer to the main quest such as the progress he made should of been added to a location instead? That's what the manual says.

I really got into your videos after watching the Pathfinder ACG your wife and you did. You do such a great job with explaining and the fact you do everything one handed adds to the amazement. I also heard you don't take money from publishers and whatnot, good on you. Makes the other guys, without naming names of course, look worse.

You have to take an undefended attack and that damage must be dealt to your heroes.

i bought game and the art is amazing and its good imagined but i just cant dive into the game becouse i dont feel any competition when playing versus game ita just weird to explain

Well, for MENSA candidates such as yourself they have nightmare decks specifically designed to crank the difficulty up for those whom this paltry mental puzzle offers little to no challenge. Following that please cure cancer.

to do 4 players, do you need another copy of that one, or can you buy an expansion pack like The Lord of the Rings: The Grey Havens Expansion Card Game

i'm not entirely sure, but I *believe* the answer is yes... two big box sets could be combined to allow for 4player. you might want to double check that on boardgamegeek though...

You would probably still need the tokens and definitely the threat counters from a 2nd core for 4 players. I believe that for every player, you flip an encounter card as well so you probably would need those also. The Deluxe expansions (Grey Havens) don't have those. If you are playing with a lot of people it's worth mentioning that Rahdo is using the *only* expansion cycle that doesn't require a Deluxe set like Grey Havens to play. For example, once you have Grey Havens you will also be able to use the six expansion packs from the Dream Chasers cycle.

I am still stuck with the solo player's choice of cards for the first scenario: Passage through Mirkwood. The cards for this scenario is obvious but which cards do I have in my deck ? Do not even know how many cards there should be in my deck! Have not played this game since it first came out and I put it away....now want to play it. I bought expansions years ago that have not seen the light of day. Anyway, thanks in advance.

MTG is a good and fun card game. Far better off than Yu-Gi-Oh! Honestly I am picking a lot of these expansions up for my sister and I since we both love LoTR.

I appreciate the intentions, but its a waste of time to watch someone misplay a game so many times! At least I can see the cards.. Why not make a script or something? I saw like 5 mistakes you had to post a fix on the video for.

little goofs like "should have paid 3 instead of 1" or forgetting to deal damage because of some little special effect don't prevent the video from doing what it's intended to do: demonstrate what the game feels like to play, which i feel the video does quite well. i'm not trying to teach anyone the rules with these videos... :)

I'd also add, having goofs really does help teach the rules, because you find yourself catching him out as he plays and having your suspicions confirmed by the Klingon channel feels like a win. I always remember the rules Rahdo goofs up better than the ones he gets right!

Based on this video I bought the game, read the manual, and gave up. Totally incomprehensible, especially how to setup. Too many variables and options, there is no story, no atmosphere, and tons of mechanics. It should be called Accountant of the rings the lifeless card game. If you are obsessed with magic the gathering, you might grok it. But try first.

It's tough going at first, but once you grok it, it's probably the most thematic LOTR game there is, apart from War of the Ring, in that it completely immerses you in the world, you get the feelings of dread and fear and rare moments of rejoicing, just like in the books and films, and the better you know Middle Earth and its characters, the easier it is to learn the abilities and limitations of all the characters and situations. There's a lot of math but it falls by wayside (or can) the more you play. You might want to try again, but if you've given it up, a simpler cooperative game that has all of the hopelessness (well, only a fool's hope) and none of the maths, try Reiner Knizia's Lord of the Rings board game.
