Lord of the Sword for the Sega Master System is an action adventure game that I avoided playing for a long time. Despite being advertised as an adventure role playing game, it's actually a bare-bones adventure with no RPG elements included. With some practice it's an okay playthrough, but it's not knocking anything off of my top games list. 🍖
The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

I love that ending. Your character standing on the wall of his castle, just flipping off everybody. Maybe there is a sequel where he starts by flipping everyone off.

There were a couple of times when I got pretty grumpy playing through, but I'm proud that I pushed through to the end. I don't think I have it in me to smash a game even if it was a hunk of junk (which this game totally isn't... it's just a hunk of trouble)

Just killing for killing sake because they will eat your soul if you let them, but uh can't rob them of their shine belt or demon wings, someone would buy demon wings,. Those enemies have swords, those fish are huge, demon fangs, claws, that giant mace and armored knight, catch a live lizard man and haul him back to town, scorpion glands are likely psychedelic,Lamias likely got a great voice maybe get her to sing at karaoke,free horse,free lance,free sheild, I'd be stealing all the road signs because the townfolk are terrible, you think I don't need directions, then you can have any, I'd sleep out side of town in spite of those fools. Yeah it's 1000s equipment slots but you gotta make multiple trips because the game is so confusing and jerkish. "Enhgh shop keep, here is a bag of 40 hearts, I want 900 money now, not soons.I'm keeping this boomerang sword because I am the lord of the sword" At least the start screen is pretty and orange sepia vapourwave, Hungy got to see that a bunch so that's nice.

It’s amazing to me the perspective here. How my “goggles” make me look back so fondly on this game when it’s really a fossilized brontosaurus turd. But I can’t help it, I love it. Lol again, such a great review. Thanks for this.

It's not as turdly as you're thinking! I stuck it out because I wanted to see the good in it, and there's definitely a lot of good along with some of the challenge and what might feel like unfairness. I wouldn't call it anything close to a favourite, but it's definitely far from what I'd consider to be a bad game.

Ahh Lord of the Sword a game that I got nearly a decade ago and has sat quietly on the shelf ever since being playtested. I just remember the controls being so different than anything else I had played so I was immediately turned off. After watching you play through it on stream I think it is time to finally give it a second chance. Not sure I can get through all of the tedium of having to criss-cross the map and kill the same enemies over and over but I guess it's worth a shot! Knowing what to expect and what not to do should definitely help :) Review Highlights: -It is always nice to see you referencing the manual and then showing how said things in the manual play out in actual gameplay -I liked how you showed off the power differences in the two swords side-by-side -I was happy the wiener kick guy made a cameo. That animation cracked me up xD -I'm glad to see you highlight the "victory lap" as a major negative in the game but now I am curious what would actually happen if you had lost all of your lives after defeating the final boss. I assume you would just game over but who knows?! -I can't believe you defiled that poor nice old wizards face but I like your style! Are you accepting art commisions? All in all, I think you did a wonderful job. "Congratulation" on another well-done video and I look forward to the next! PS: It's pronounced "Dwar-lay" ;-)

I am constantly amazed that you draw so many maps for your games. I did that Once in my life. For Dungeons and Dragons: Pool of Radiance. I decided it wasn't worth it to me. I would however love to see more pictures of the maps you have drawn. Lots of side by side the games maps next to yours. Hey, just because I don't like drawing them doesn't mean I don't like seeing them.

I always keep a notepad nearby when I'm playing games. It helps so much to jot things down or even make a crude map even if it's not pretty. I do try to show them in my videos if I make them for a game but the last few I've played haven't had a grid pattern to bust out the old graph paper! I'm sure I have a few back in my Twitter feed if you dig deep enough!

I very much enjoy your videos. You cover games I've never heard of from back when I was growing up. You have a very pleasant way of talking and describing the games. I got a hearty chuckle from the very sad man. I also like how you show stuff from the manuals, as I used to love to read them when I was a kid and I definitely miss them. I get a big kick out of when you show your notes and maps as that is also extremely nostalgic. I hope your videos become more popular, as I find the more mainstream reviews of retro games to be done in a very over produced and irritating kind of way. They force so much freaking enthusiasm. Like you're gonna lose interest or something. ANYWAYS GREAT STUFF YOU GOT HERE

You're too kind! Thanks very much :) I enjoyed manuals a ton as well and used to read The Legend of Zelda's and Faxanadu's all the time... I don't really ever start a game I'm going to stick with unless I've read up on how things work for my own sake of not feeling like an idiot! And I also have a memory like a sieve these days so notes are essential! I hope people keep stopping by too. The well-wishes are appreciated!

This is another nostalgia driven title I use to play with my friend who had a SMS back in the day. We tried to beat it many times whenever there wasn’t something else to play. Years later I did manage to find a stack of games for cheap at the time and this was one that brought the nostalgia back! Including all the cursing from it’s difficulty 🤬 Unfortunately I lost my original collection so it might be a while until I can try this again, but when I do that music will bring me back to those early years of gaming 😊

I rented this game a couple of times as a kid in the early-mid 90's. I was always really into RPG's, so was so excited seeing that 'label' in the top corner of the box at the video store. And like you, I fired it up to much disappointment. A dull, clunky action game with mild RPG elements which were mostly aesthetics. And over time I'd think 'im gonna give it another go!' only to lead to the same disappointment. It's one of those things that I am planning on going back to soon, as an adult, for some closure. I did the same for YS (which I didn't like as a kid) and I beat it and absolutely loved it. I'll just know to keep my expectations low 😊 Thanks for another great trip down memory lane with these Master System reviews! ✨

My experience with this game was... weird to put it mildly. My dad bought it when I was like 7 or 8, (we are from Spain and we didn't speak a word in English back then). I was used to linear games, so this was a first for me. I somehow kinda enjoyed it and managed to get to the mountain monster somehow, by exploring and trial and error (since I didn't understand one word the villagers said). Was never able to discover the dungeons until the internet became a thing and found a guide that helped me finish it, so many years later. And the funnniest thing is, now that I also speak English, I'm not sure if understanding the villagers would have helped, because of how vague their dialogue often is. But anyhow, I still like this game and holds a special place in my collection
@hungrygoriya
@hungrygoriya 6 месяцев назад
I'm so glad that you eventually got to finish this game. Thanks for sharing your experience with it. Over the years, I've spoken to quite a few people that didn't speak English when they got into video games that required it. It's cool that you stuck it out and pushed forward and got somewhere purely by brute force exploration.

New Hungry Goriya! You keep digging up these gems from the Master System. I need to start looking at the catalog more. I know you're putting this game down, but it still looks cool. The programmers should have put more time into this before release. A few minor upgrades to the gameplay would have made this a must play. Another excellent video! The final send off with the middle finger was perfect.

Thank you :) I bought 11 action adventure/RPGs in a lot a few years ago and have been working my way through them slowly to savour the experience. If you do dive in, I hope you find some great stuff because I've been consistently charmed and amazed with much of what I've played through so far. And I completely agree with you. This game is really rough around the edges in some parts and with a little refining, it would've easily been one of my favourites up there with things like Faxanadu. It's too bad that it didn't quite make it to that level, but it was still fun to learn and finish. That middle finger felt more like a proper backhander after crawling to the end though :D

I like to have the full picture before I review anything, so it was a must to get through this. It's also easy when I stream these things too because I'm not just sighing away in my house by myself feeling frustrated. There's a real sense of accountability when you have an audience!

Seeing this game, I get major Zelda II vibes from it, from the towns to the structure to the a-frame-or-two-more-than-usual animation on the main character. I'm sure Castlevania II must have been an influence as well. Zelda II was a January '87 release in Japan, Castlevania II was August '87. Lord of the Sword hit in June '88, so it's pretty reasonable to think it was an attempt by Sega to have their own similar game out on the market at the time. Unfortunately, it seems like it was handed to a team who didn't have a good handle on how to do that. Given that June 1988 was also right when they first publicly announced the Mega Drive in Japan, and a few months later released the final domestic Mark III/Master System games, it's not unreasonable to think its development time may also have been cut short if management wanted to move the devs over to working on the new system. Given the flaws & bugs you noted here, it definitely seems rushed and insufficiently tested.

That slow down bug did the opposite to me. =( It was so slow the collisions failed to register half of the time and I would get nailed =( Still, I took the game back, asked if I could swap it for the same game, but the bug persisted. The guy at the shop said he had a new one coming in next week and asked if I would like to take a different game in the mean time. I never got another Lord of the Sword game but I must have swapped through twenty games before the guy said, "There's new console coming soon, so if you like I'll take your Master System games and trade them for it" Sure enough I traded most of my collection for a shiny new Mega Drive. Great review! This is hands down the most BS game I have ever played 😂. I just played through this game trying to beat it without using a guide or any hints, and ultimately had to get help from GameFAQs because it was simply impossible. As you mentioned in the review after a certain point (after the fight with the boss in the marsh/bog) you are given NO direction where to actually go and the fact NPCs flat out lie to you makes it 10x worse. And since there’s no way of knowing who’s telling the truth and the fact NPCs repeat old phrases you’re just sent in an endless loop trying to (hopefully) trigger something new on a mere 10 lives. It’s the most broken game I ever seen. After finally beating it, Im convinced this game was made my satan and I never want to touch it again. 😂

The furthest I ever got was the pirate boss fight (ended up being the hardest boss in the game by far) and at the time I wasn’t even sure how I was able to trigger the correct dialogue to finally open that up. I enjoy the feel it brings of going on a grand quest and adventuring. These are my favorite style of games. So with the ability to save, a menu screen (lol) and cohesive dialogue, this could have been Sega’s answer to Zelda 2.
