The original Numenorean kings lived for about 400 years. Elros was an exception, who lived to be exactly 500 years. As soon as they were "turning bad", their lifespan went down to 200-250, (while the Lords of Andunie hardly waned at all. They were still 350-400)

Arachir, I have to correct you to a point. You said that Gandalf did not interrogate Gollum. However, in the book (Elrond's council), Gandaf gives a detailed report of his actions. He was in Gondor, when he heard that Aragorn captured the Gollum. After reading the papyrus of Isildur, he went to Thranduil's realm and he interrogated Gollum. A full report of his actions is in the second chapter of LotR, when he tells Frodo about the ring and how he discovered that the ring is the One Ring. You can see the book if you want, Shadows of the Past and Elrond's Council are the titles.

A new lore video? Truly the Valar have smiled upon us! The reference to Aragorn "exploring the hearts of men" in the East and South has always intrigued me. It seems like Tolkein left some intentional hints that, while the men of the East and South are almost invariably seen in the main story as the enemies of Gondor or Rohan, they are not inherently or uniformly evil. The other passage along those lines is Sam's reaction to seeing the Haradrim soldier killed in Faramir's ambush, "He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil at heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in peace." It makes you wonder if Aragorn might have been doing something along the lines of what the Blue Wizards are hinted as doing (perhaps even working directly with them), which you've brought into the game with the Blue Wizards script for Khand. At the very least, it seems like Aragorn came to understand some of the motivations of the Easterlings and Southrons, perhaps discovering that their wars against Gondor and its allies stemmed at least partially from coercion rather than purely evil intent or appetite for destruction (as would be the case with orcs). This would be consistent with his actions toward them after being crowned; Aragorn pardons those that surrendered, makes peace, and gives the former slaves of Mordor their own lands. While it is mentioned that Aragorn has to fight more wars in the East and South during his reign, he clearly does not see the peoples of those lands as purely evil.

I've never had the opportunity to find any writings as to the deeds of Aragorn, King Elessar after his crowning. Where and what is the name of the book that has that info?
@briangarrow448
@briangarrow448 6 лет назад
I thought that I read Gollum escaped from the elves because they allowed him the opportunity to get fresh air and he climbed to the tops of the Mirkwood forest trees, and at that time, Orcs attacked the elves. Coincidence, I think not!! Even Tolkien mentioned that possibly Gollum had been able to secretly contact the Orcs and enlist their aid. Am I imagining this or mixing up other story plot lines?
@xavierjd2011
@xavierjd2011 6 лет назад
Brian Garrow No, you are quite right.
@Wolfeson28
@Wolfeson28 6 лет назад
You're correct; Legolas tells the full story to the Council of Elrond. He does also voice the strong suspicion that Gollum had somehow been in contact with the Orcs, and that the attack by the Orcs had been made for the express purpose of freeing him.

I apologize for the inconvenience but in the books is there any reference on what happened to the Ent females?
@briangarrow448
@briangarrow448 6 лет назад
Noah I believe they wandered away from the Ents in search of new lands. My memory isn't the best, but I think they were supposed to have wandered East of Fanghorn into the Brown Lands. Supposedly the Ents were hoping after the crowning of the king, Elessar, that the resulting peace would allow them to search in the lands of the East that had been closed off to them during the reign of Sauron.

BTW, an important fact that wasn't mentioned (unless I'm mistaken) is that Aragorn didn't just die, he gave his life away freely, as the old kings of Numenor, so as to not be greedy and tarry in this world beyond their years, but to accept the gift of man, death (that men had grown to fear, because of Sauron).

They didn't grow to fear death because of Sauron, it was because of Morgoth. Sauron only took advantage of the fear of death that Morgoth put in man to get of Numenor to invade Valinor.

That point about Boromir having met Aragorn early in his life. To see him grow up and become the new beacon of Gondor. To become so mighty of a man. For Aragorn to witness his death in his arms years later really sticks on into the heart. I still feel the tears at that moment today. Lurtz really pissed off the wrong king.

@gib59er56
@gib59er56 Год назад
You are talking about the movie. There is no "Lurtz" in the LotR. And Boromir never said anything close to what the movie showed him saying. He never gave any respect to Aragorn in any way as Tolkien made his character. Boromir was just like his father, an arrogant ass. Faramir, by contrast is very like Aragorn, a warrior both wise and bold. If you have read the books you know that all Boromir does and say`s in following Aragorn is disagree and argue with every move he makes. And he has no respect for Galadriel and Celeborn. Galadriel was born before the sun and moon as one of the first Elves ever born. She went to Valinor, and came back with the Flight of the Noldor, in the host of Fingolfin. She is 5000 years old and b y far the most powerful Elf in all of Arda, older than Elrond even. If you just happen to like Boromir, cool, many do and that is what makes us all different, and we are all the better for that! I just wanted to let you know that the movie made Boromir a different person, unlike Tolkien`s Boromir. Not evil, just very willful and flawed, and Aragorn is very patient with him, even when he is calling Galadriel names, but the second she looks at him in the eye, she sees right thru him, and knows he will try to take the Ring. Aragorn tries to teach him, but he will not listen. Sorry for the long winded crap, I just started free thinking as I was typing, and thought of what Jackson did with the films. I think he did a great job, great cast, great visuals, but some wacky shit as well. That is no easy job, making the books into movies!! I enjoyed them for the most part.

Aragorn is a 10-year-old child in Rivendell when the party of Bilbo and the Dwarves arrive there in 2941. That would be an interesting scene to see. Perhaps Gandalf and Aragon first met at that time, instead of when Aragorn was around 20? Even if Elrond is still hiding Aragorn's identity from Gandalf?
6 лет назад
I imagine they almost certainly would meet but I doubt Gandalf would impart much upon the 10 year old Aragorn. Merely introduce himself I suppose. :)

A bit off topic, but I’m a bit confused. Aragorn is said to have been about 10 years old at the time of the hobbit but the hobbit took place 60 years prior to lotr. Aragorn was 87 during lotr. The math doesn’t add up to me. Unless I’m mistaken?
6 лет назад
Aragorn is born in 2931, Bilbo sets out from Imladris in April of 2941. 10 years later. The events of the hobbit take place 78 years before the War of the Ring. :)

That is cool to think the fellowship for the most part all died with eachother with aragorn merry and pippin in gondor and frodo Sam gimli in valinor with legolas and gandalf carrying on there. I always wonder if sailing to valinor does that mean that they met the actual valar themselves. I also wonder if getting the ring to valinor could've also been an option. I'd assume that it wouldn't sway the valar as well as Aules mastery of craft could destroy it.

The tv series should feature aragorn in a similar role as the Witcher in the recent series, being a reserved badass with other characters rotating in and out and taking center stage. Different seasons could take place in different parts of his life, like in eriador/rivendell, then rohan, then gondor, then the umbar raid etc. I think it would be best to have aragorn be a static, stoic character like Judge Dredd in the 2012 movie, whereas other new characters can be more dynamic like Judge Anderson in the same film. Since we already know and love Aragorn they should not do too much with his character like give him additional romantic drama (Arwen being his one and only obviously), also they shouldn't give him too many changes of heart like giving up hope and obviously he can't die. Hence the need to make other characters the dramatic focus.

As an aside if Aragorn was 88 at the time of the war of the ring, and he lived to be 210, and the average lifespan of a normal man of out time is 80, then Aragorn would have been in appearance of someone in around their 30th birthday. Asuming that Aragorn could have lived 30 more years but in declining health, he gave up life when he sensed the first sign of old age. He would have been in his prime during the war of the ring despite prior Dunedaine not being as vigorous at that age. But perhaps maybe Aragorn was granted the extra years and health by the Valar only after the war of the ring, I cant remember how his age and appearance was described.

The Dunedain never lived past the age of 240 perhaps one or two may have lived past that age but the maximum age was 240 for the vast majority and well the Dunedain of the Northern territories of Gondor had declined in their life expectancy the Dunedain of the South such as in Dol Amroth had not declined to such a degree but even purer was the rangers the Dunedain of the North who still lived just as long as the Numenorians of old. It’s easily forgotten that Gondor had a civil war that diluted the Numenorian blood lines in Mina’s Tirith, Mina’s Ithill and Osgiliath as the Northmen would the settle in those lands and interbreed. But the southern coastal territories remained largely untouched. The Dunedain of Arnor had a civil war between themselves and held a contempt for most the other Human races in that region such as the Rhudar who betrayed them and the Northmen who fought for Angmar so the likely good of interbreeding is significantly lower which kept the Numenorian blood pure hence why you have a Dunedain like Aragorn who was so true of Numenorian blood he did live the full life span of a Dunedain.

Tough they might have met before, I think Aragorn and Legolas only became friends while traveling with the Fellowship, no?

Thanks for this. Great insights brought out with comparisons of ages and the chronologies of characters. I note a few corrections in the comments, but was additionally disappointed, although it is not directly relevant to Aragorn, that you did not mention that one major difference from the films of Saruman not dying, but being cast out from Isengard and coming to The Shire to wreak some further havoc on the halflings who seem to have been the most instrumental in bringing down the Chief of the Istari. This, as you'd know, is covered in the later chapter, The Scoring of The Shire, one of my favourite chapters. It is interesting as some Hobbits come to serve the new regime both Wormtongue and Saruman establish, rather like Vichy France.

I just thought it was a such an important divergence from the films as the Hobbits and what happens to them is the central importance as they are the lens through which we perceive all lore. Ellessar then, most assuredly, knew that Hobbits could look after themselves after dealing with such an internal coup of their political and social structures although they may have had self-rule granted them, although they had that for much of the period already since the Arnorian petty kingdoms had been destroyed. This was likely just a legally binding necessity in the new landscape of his direct rule and firmer grasp on his various realms.

Oh, thanks for the heads-up on the fan made video of Aragorns's travels. I never heard of it. Fan-made...*grits teeth

That is completely unrelated to Aragorn though and is covered in the Istari video. I suppose it might be worth while doing a full video on Movie V Book. :)

How could you not have seen the fan movie of Aragorn hunting Gollum? It's short and rather good. Again, how could you not have see this very short and very good little film. It's free for fuks sakes...

The different names attributed to Aragorn have to do with his stages in life. As last remaining descendant of the line of Anarion, son of Elendil, Estel (Hope) was the name given to him by his mother in Rivendel after his fathers death, since he then becomes the only one capable of claiming Gondors throne. Elessar, is the name he will bear, once he proves to earn the title of King, and is accompanied by the giving of a blue gem stone with the same name from the hands of Elrond (as it is a family heirloom), when he marries Arwen Undomiel after the last battle of the Third Age, confirming his kingship.

The Elessar was actually green and was given to Aragorn by Galadriel, in Arwen’s name, when the Company passed trough Lothlórien, therefore before Aragorn became King.

Tolkien, may I ask, why did you just have Aragorn waltzs off to Rhun and Harad, basically do fuck all apart for 28 years from finding the hearts of men or some such bollocks, did he get a job? Attempt a civil war among both nations? Or is he just Middle Earth's equivalent of an extremely determined tourist
