Lorentz Transformations: The Key to Relativistic Spacetime

The theory of relativity emerged by uniting the notions of time and space. When we change the point of view of one observer to another in relative motion, we need a mathematical rule that differentiates space and time in both situations and that allows us to make the transition between two reference frames. This rule exists and is expressed through mathematical relations called Lorentz transformations. These transformation relations enable, in a mathematical and precise way, the measurements and comparisons of movements between inertial reference frames. In addition, they are the mathematical basis of flat space-time diagrams.
