Lynn married Mooney at 15, was a mom by 16. 4 kids by 22. She was 1 of 8 kids living in a 1 room cabin .She entered contests for fun & prize money. Her actual life much like Dolly Parton was more amazing than the stories. The poverty in US was severe in a way that’s hard to understand now. Dirt poor, no heat ,water from a well , sew your own clothes, walk if you’re going, if you had. Radio you were lucky, make your own entertainment. That is the world that produced the Country of old . A lot of other genres too
I was married at 17, had my first child at 18 and by 22 I should have had 5 children but 2 never lived. All I wanted was a house full of babies but I couldn’t do it and live. I got my babies by adopting and fostering, all 50 of them. They all went to private schools and I made some amazing adults. It wasn’t sad that I knew what I wanted and every single child I tried to have was planned. I did not let any child of mine marry that early because they were never as old as I was at 17. I had already raised 5 younger siblings and I started at 4 years old. My marriage? It will be our 54th anniversary on July 3rd. It isn’t unfortunate for some to have a family early.
Fist city is one of my favorite Loretta Lynn songs! Country girls don't put up with that crap! My hubby always tells people they have more to worry about me kicking their behinds than him! I'm 5ft tall and he's 6'2"! Lol
Loretta and Conway Twitty made many duets together, one called YOU'RE THE REASON OUR KIDS ARE UGLY is hilarious. Now their grandchildren perform together as Twitty and Lynn
Conway Twitty's Grandson Tre Twitty and Loretta Lynn's Granddaughter Tayla Lynn are a TRIBUTE DUET for the songs of their Grandparents...they are NOT IMPERSONATORS of their Grandparents...obviously, there are strong similarities, but, they have their own style and original music, as well as the hits Conway and Loretta had. There will never be another "The Best Friend A Song Ever Had" and "The Coal Miner's Daughter". Tre is the son of Michael Twitty, and Tayla is the daughter of Ernest Ray (Ernie) Lynn. Also, although retired from singing, Joni Lee, Conway's daughter (Tre's aunt), and co-performer of Don't Cry Joni, sometimes sells Twitty and Lynn merchandise at their shows.
Lynn is the most-awarded female country recording artist of all time. 18x Grammy Award-winner. 60-year career, touring until the age of 85. 50 studio albums.
Loretta wrote songs about her life. And she never backed down. Her husband was not exactly faithful. But she stuck with him any way. One women told her twins ,when they were children, she was with their Dad now. They told Loretta and she went to the woman's house! Check out Fist City and The Pill
Yall watch the movie based on the true events of her life. She was part of the producing staff and consulted with the actors to make sure it was told as it actually happened. She was a baddie when she was young and she was a baddie when she passed! The movie is Coal Miners Daughter. The actress Sissy Spacek played Ms Loretta and won an Oscar for the part. Tommy Lee Jones played her husband Doolittle Lynn. Lynn is the actual last name not Loretta's middle name as some have thought. She is fascinating and you are right.. DOES NOT PLAY.. She invented FAFO!
Loretta has many amazing songs You should check out FIST CITY, GOD BLESS AMERICA AGAIN, THE PILL, YOUR SQUAW IS ON THE WARPATH, DONT COME HOME A DRINKING WITH LOVING ON YOUR MIND. She was definitely an advocate for women. The Queen of country music, the GOAT.
Loretta didn't always play the guitar because she wasn't overly good at it; however, she played it in that show because she was pregnant and back then pregnant women were not allowed to show their bellies on television. They always stood behind a high-backed chair or were sitting down or stood with their back to the camera or had something blocking them from the waist down. Loretta had the guitar to hide the fact that she was pregnant. Things sure have changed a lot since then.
Fun fact: My dad, a teenager, son of a coal miner in eastern KY, was working as a DJ at the local small town radio station back in the day when a teenage Loretta Lynn stopped by to ask the local station to consider playing her new record. Both teenagers… how cute is that?!
I took my parents to see Loretta back int he 90s. She didn't have a set list - she took audience requests, which tells you just how good her band had to be. Anyway, someone shouted out "Fist City". Loretta's response was "I dern near killt that girl", turned around to the band, told them "Fist City" and proceeded to sing the hell out of that song.
My Mamaw Nell was one of Loretta's back up singers waaay back in the 60s/70s. I have a picture somewhere of her holding me as a small child. I don't remember back that far, I was under 2 y.o. but the stories I've heard from family were that she was a true lady, tough but genuinely loved,
You are probably the first person ever to call Miss Loretta “gangsta” that made my day! Happy New Year to you both! Don love the beanie! I can appreciate this music now but I remember hating it when I was growing up 😂😂
Loretta Lynn was 1 of the ladies of country music. Several of her songs were banned from the country radio stations because of what they are about. Some of those songs are: The Pill Fist City You are not Woman enough to take my Man Loretta Lynn was friends with Kid Rock, Dolly Parton, Reba McIntyre, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, and many other artists. Loretta was a part of the outlaw country music with some of her songs. In August of 2020 Loretta and Kid Rock played a joke on their fans by making them think they got married over the weekend. On August 31 2020 Loretta set the record straight that she and Kid Rock didn't actually get married. Loretta was a coal miners daughter. She grew up poor. She was from Kentucky. Her father worked in the Banner coal mines and died from a lung condition that killed coal miners quite often. That condition was called black lung. Black Lung is from breathing in coal dust.
Loretta is the queen of country. A few months before she passed she challenged country trio Chapel Hill to do a retake om one of her songs (they did a retake of Jolene on AGT) and I am anxiously awaiting the results. Loretta is a lyrical ba****
That guitar is called a steel guitar and you do use a slide to play it, along with floor pedals and knee pedals. It's the quintescential country sound.
What I love is that she is a take no prisoners kind of girl when others like Tammy Wynette was saying stand by your man or Dolly was begging Jolene not to take her man! Loretta was like uh no! You ain’t even woman enough!!! My kinda chick!!!
Loretta was simply the best and she was a national treasure as well. This one was just a warm-up for "Fist City", which is definitely one you should check out. Another good one to look into would be "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' ". And yes, she passed last year at age 90.
She did several duets with Conway Twitty - my favorite: You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly!! 🤣🤣🤣 They also did Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man - that was a good one!! Loretta, to me, is a NATIONAL TREASURE!! I also liked her: Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'.....Early, GOOD Country with GREAT VOCALS!! Her little sister, Crystal Gayle hit it big in the late 70s / early 80s with: Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue, When I Dream, and Talkin' In Your Sleep....ENJOY, GUYS!!!
Do not mess with Loretta. The Coal Miner's Daughter.. She made many a song about standing up for women. Her Husband was a player.. married her Loretta when she was 13 yrs old.. he was in his 20's.. this is back in the day in the Holler... Loretta made a killing off songs from her life. but she was a feisty biotch.. She was with him till the day HE died.. she didn't have to be.. she was making the money.. but she was raised to love her man and she knew Mooney loved her
Try Fist City and PILL (she sang about birth control almost as soon as it was approved!) Loretta married at 14 and had six kids. She was married to Dew Lynn for over 50 years and recorded “I Miss Being a Mrs Tonight” after her passed. Loretta was a country Queen! Her duets with Conway Twitty are legendary. She passed in 2023.
She wrote most of her songs based on her life experiences. Her husband tried to be a player, but Loretta wasn't having it! That instrument that you were questioning is a steel guitar.
You were pointing to a PEDAL STEEL GUITAR on that musician's lap. You should review more Loretta. Ex., "You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly". Good work.
Loretta was playing a show...and she spotted the woman that was the inspiration for this song....she jumped off the stage and threw punches on her before getting back on stage to finish off her set!
Loretta Lynn, the queen of country music the matriarch of country music meaning she was the longest living grand old Opry member with over a 60 year career
Doubly gangster sung with Loretta's sweet smile and southern accent. This isn't a biker chick in jeans and leather, it's somebody's mama, she and her man may go out on the town every now and then, but don't get in their personal space. She was a daughter of the working class, got rich the hard way, and never for one minute forgot her roots.
Watch Coal miners daughter. It explains a lot about this queen of country. Listen to the pill she sang this when birth control first came out. Its a hoot! Louisiana woman Mississippi man it a fantastic one with Conway Twitty.
Loretta was a certified badass mammajamma. And if you’ve never seen the biopic Coal Miner’s Daughter, it is a MUST. It’s 40+ years old but still a treasure.
Back in the day .... Yes, there was no internet but there was "the neighborhood" & thing called gossip which was the human internet. LOL!! Trust me people knew who was boot scooting with someone else's significant other back then, even if they were the last to know, it eventually got around. 👍😎👍 If you get a chance watch Loretta's story in the movie "Coal Miner's Daughter", it's old but every generation should see it & be inspired. Highly recommend it!!
Sissy Spacek did a wonderful portrayal of Loretta Lynn in the movie Coal Miner's Daughter which is the story of Loretta's life. It is a must watch for you at this point. One interesting note about the movie, the singing in the movie is done by Sissy Spacek. She spent days with Loretta at her home studio to "get it right." I heard an awesome story about how Sissy was downstairs in the studio practicing and Loretta's manager came in the house calling out for Loretta and saying how good she was sounding that day when it was Sissy that was singing. Her own manager couldn't tell that it wasn't Loretta!
I am a 64 year old subscriber to your channel (you ain't so old, my friend) and I am enjoying your dive into old school country music. I grew up with this stuff and then went on to play in New Wave and rock bands in the 80s and 90s. At the moment, I am mostly interested in BTS!!! But my late father played pedal steel at the Grand Ol Opry and backed Loretta Lynn a few times. I hated this music when I was growing up but now I see its beauty and magic. Not a fan of new country, but I absolutely revere Loretta, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and George Jones. BTW, you wanna hear old school country perfection, listen to George Jones' "The Race Is On" or "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Keep up the good work! (BTW, Loretta's husband was a total womanizer, but she loved him and they stayed together for fifty years til he died. Jack White of White Stripes produced and played on her last recording, "I Miss Being A Wife Tonight"...you should listen to that one, too!)
One of my most memorable nights was the night I met Loretta Lynn. I was in college in the late '70's in St. Louis and she was appearing at the now-defunct Keil Auditorium, a huge arena and concert hall. My friend, who the previous summer was Ms. Lynn's dresser (an intern position), during her concert tour, had an extra ticket and invited me to go with her. When we arrived, Loretta's famous purple bus was in the parking lot and we got to go on it. Conway Twitty was the opening act and did his entire set in front of the curtain, making the actual stage area part of the backstage. Next thing I know we were sitting behind the curtain playing poker with Loretta's band. After Loretta sang to I don't remember how many thousand people, keeping them all in the palm of her hand, she stood downstage center and signed everyone's autographs as they lined up and approached her. My friend and I stood at her side onstage while she talked to us. We were theater and music majors and she was giving priceless advice about the business of show buiness to us. We said goodbye and started to leave because we didn't want to infringe too much, but she grabbed my friend by the arm and said, "Where you two think you're goin'? You're not leaving me up here all by myself are ya?" I remember my friend mentioned she couldn't wait to graduate from college, and Loretta said, "You just hold tight and you'll be outa there before you know it, wishin' you was back in it." I've met a lot of celebrities in my career but that was and always will be one of my most treasured memories.
Coal Miner's Daughter is the true story of her childhood. The movie is well worth watching. Tommy Lee Jones plays her husband Mooney Lynn and Levon Helm, drumner for The Band, plays her father.
Unfortunately Loretta Lynn passed away at the age of 90 October 4th 2022 in her sleep at home. She had some of the most incredible songs that any singer has ever sung and I would encourage you just to go through many of her songs. The song Coal Miner's Daughter is about her father and some of her upbringing as a little girl if my memory serves me correctly. One of her sisters that is still living is called Crystal Gayle who was also an incredible country music singer for many years. Check out some of her songs because she has a beautiful voice too. They were using a slide guitar in this song in case you were wondering if that is what it's called. That is one of my favorite all-time Musical instruments.
Lorretta wrote all of her own songs based on personal experiences, so we know what this one was about. 😅 She passed away in Oct 2022...she was 90 yrs old. Yes, she sang with Jonny Cash, and others. In case you're interested, there's an excellent movie (1980) of the story of her (hard) life called, "Coal Miner's Daughter". Sissy Specek played Loretta and did all of the singing. (who knew she could sing?) and won the Academy Award for best actress. The movie was also nominated for best picture, best cinematography, best screeplay and best production design. Lorretta was always a colourful woman in the country music world. I didn't like country music, but I enjoyed this movie very much. Thank you for your reaction.
My dad once worked for Lorretta on her ranch outside of Murphysboro Tenn. She was one cool woman. A great singer as well, most of her music was based on true events that happened during her life. Such as Fist City was about her catching her husband ( Moony ) with another women making out in a car.Moony was known as a womenizer , he got his knickname from running moonshine in Tenn.
Loretta Lynn has passed on after years of failing health. She did music with Conway Twitty (not Johnny Cash). She sang about life and social issues at the time such as women rights and such. She was outspoken and a woman in a time when women were supposed to be quiet and stay at home. She went against the grain and did very well in a male dominated industry.
Loretta was the queen of country. There is a movie called Coal Miner's Daughter. It is a biographical film about loretta's life. Big time movie Sissy Spacek played Loretta, Tommy Lee Jones played her husband and the great Levon Helms (drummer, lead singer and played several other instruments as well as being a songwriter) from the band known as The Band played her father. She has another song with a similiar message to this one called Fist City. Oh by the way guys that instrument is a steel or peddle steel guitar.
you should research Loretta, you have NO idea just how ahead of her time she was. She is a LEGEND & probably THE most respected woman in country music EVER!
The Queen of Country Music 🎶 the great Loretta Lynn! Loretta wrote her songs, most based on her life experiences. She was a consummate performer, a true professional entertainer. She got a lot of her first exposure by being featured with E. T. known as Ernest Tubb with his Texas Troubadours, she did many duets and performed with Conway Twitty. I had the honor of opening for Loretta several times several times as a young girl in Chicago back in the early 90’s. This was around the time her movie about her life was first out and called Coalminers Daughter and it’s an awesome movie to boot! It’s a real story about a real woman, her life and her rise to fame. She was a best friend of the legendary Patsy Cline and if you haven’t listened to her, you really really should - amazing voice, amazing person just like Loretta. Loretta would talk to you while standing in the wings, what you saw was what you got, not a bone of pretense in her body, a lovely soul. Sadly she has passed on I believe in 2023. I cried because it was close to my heart as she is a Kentuckian and my dad was too. My dad was Cal Starr, he booked Loretta many times through the years and brought her wonderful spirit and music to many happy Chicagoans! I remember once backstage she would see my dad throw her arms up and say there’s my favorite booking agent! And they would hug, I think it was a Kentucky thing! There is much more to Loretta and all the people she touched with her music, thank you for covering her, I hope you will visit her greatest hits and some of her duets with Conway - great music - I enjoyed your presentation, thank you! Kind regards, Lori London
Miss Loretta Lynn was.... unhappily... and infamously... married to the same man for 50 years. Oliver Lynn. Many of her songs are based around this marriage. This is just one of them.
Allot of her songs were based on her life experiences. If you want to know more about her, I recommend the bio-pic "Coal Miner's Daughter" with Sissy Spacek. Sissy won the Oscar that year for Best Actress for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn. Tommy Lee Jones play Loretta's husband.
Loretta is the Queen of country music, her best friend was Patsy Cline who is also a legend and died was too soon. Loretta died sadly but she will never be dethroned IMO.
If you've heard Coal Miners daughter, you have to watch the movie by the same title, its Loretta Lynn's real life story. Her Dad was a coal miner in Buther Holler, Kentucky. Her family was really poor, she was raised without alot, but when she got her singing career going she became very successful. And she wrote her own songs.
And she meant it. She was a Coal Miners Daughter. There is a movie about her life, it is a few years old but I love it still. She was an amazing lady. Thank you.
She is a country icon. I've been to her house a few times in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. She had a couple more songs along these lines, Don't Come Home A Drink'in and Fist City.
Yeah, Loretta! you think of "Coal Miner's Daughter".. where she is all meek and giving it to her family background.. and then you get THIS.. she was awesome!
Country people back in these days were REAL ! They did not know what PRETENTION was. They lived in the moment and called it like it was. They said whatever popped into their head! Dolly Parton has a lot of that in her still ! If you want to see one of the best movies EVER produced, watch "Coal Mine's Daughter" . It is her life story and is SO well written and acted and really shows you life back in those days in the hills and how her life was completely changed through her songwriting and singing. Amazing! Your wife will love it too. Loretta had 8 children I believe. Fun reaction to the original "gangster lady", Loretta Lynn !!!!! 😆👍🤼♀️💪💖
Haha! Wait'll you hear her do "Fist City"!!! And keep in mind, Loretta wrote her own material. So she's telling you exactly what she's thinkin'! You don't mess with sweet Loretta!!! LOL
So glad you found Loretta!!! The Queen and original bad ass!!! She's had the most banned songs by anyone artist! All her songs are based on her own life experiences. Check out Ones on the way, Rated x, and the Pill!
This was such a banger in the Country community, and both my parents loved Loretta Lynn, so I grew up hearing a lot of her music, and although, not my general genre of music, but love her!!! Side note: This song always reminds me of another strong female song, called, These Boots are Made for Walking, by Nancy Sinatra, you guys may want to check out 😊
