If you'd like to help support Olivia here is her GoFundMe: www.gofundme.c...
These days, a growing number of families are turning to ‘weekly rate’ hotels as a way to stay off the streets. But don’t let the roof fool you, many of these motels-turned-homes are shoddy, small, and unkempt. Hardly ideal living conditions for any person, nevermind young children.
Olivia and her son Alex live in a small hotel room in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County. The area is filled with miles of weekly rate hotels that provide refuge for low-income families. Prostitution, drug use, and violence often occur in the same hotels. Often called the "hidden homeless', families with children that cannot afford adequate housing call these hotels home.
Olivia shares an often too common struggle low-income single moms have to go through on a daily basis just to survive. The strength and resilience Olivia has going from hotel to hotel and job to job are beyond commendable. Olivia is an amazing young mother giving her all to raise her son against all obstacles.
Most people hold on to the belief that homelessness is an older man with a cardboard sign begging for money. They also hold on strongly to the false belief that the solution to homelessness is the homeless person just needs to get a job. Olivia and her son living in a hotel are the homelessness you don't see, but you need to see. Olivia also is employed but still cannot afford an apartment.
Family homelessness, once viewed as episodic and situational, has become chronic, with families accounting for 37% of the overall homeless population and 50% of the sheltered population.
1 in 30 American children experiences homelessness. They live with or without their families, in shelters, cars and abandoned buildings. Families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, accounting for almost 40-50% of the nation’s homeless. Lack of affordable housing is a primary cause of homelessness in families; often one or both parents are working, but not making a livable wage. Additionally, events such as illness, unemployment, accidents, and violence limit the ability to secure stable housing and affordable housing.
Olivia is an amazing young mother and an inspiration. She has a dream of going to law school to become a lawyer and eventually, the first African woman to be a Supreme Court Judge. I have a feeling she'll make it happen.
Very special thanks to LA Family Housing lafh.org

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Wow! Christmas Day!! I have a tenant who has not paid rent for a year now! He ended up in the hospital, nearly died. There is no way I was going to evict him as it was a legitimate reason for not paying rent. I have suffered because of this as I'm disabled and on a fixed income and so not receive government assistance like food stamps or SSI. Only my Social Security. But I have been houseless more than once and no waaaay would I evict him. People need to quit being greedy, and start applying Christian values to their acciones. He finally started a go fund me and shared with me! And last month he paid rent. He's applied for a loan and with that he's going to pay the back rent!

Olivia seems like the most deserving, hard-working, educated, dedicated mother and child who you have interviewed so far. It is just sad that she can't find a better job to pay for housing. I am in disbelief of any and all negative comments about this person. So, in order to address some of them, here is a list: 1. To those who criticize her car payment: Whatever car she has, she needs it to go to work, and it needs to function properly. If her payments seem expensive to you, that is what she is paying for the added assurance of her car not breaking down and having to pay repair bills. Also, if her car breaks down, she could be late or miss her work, and put her job in jeopardy. Having a good, reliable car that doesn't need to be taken to a mechanic often is better for a single mom in her situation. I don't believe she is a mechanic to be able to fix car problems. 2. To those who criticize her son's headphones: What do you know about where he got them? They could have been a gift from someone! You all assumed that she spent money to buy them. Even if she did, maybe they were a store demo-model and were half-price, or on sale, or, even, an imitation of what you think it is. How low can one stoop to criticize this child's belongings! 3. To those who criticize her future plans, or rather, the simple fact of having such plans: This woman is trying to make her dreams come true, and, in order to do that, one first has to have dreams. She first has to get accepted to law school. If she doesn't, she most likely will attempt something else so that she can get a higher-paying job and more job security. How can one get anywhere without dreams, or, at least, logical, valid ideas? Clearly, this woman is a dedicated mother. Her son looks very well raised, polite, and nice. She doesn't have a whole brood of kids, unlike some other homeless people. She takes her responsibilities seriously, no matter what choices or mistakes have led her to this point in life. She is doing all that is in her power to get herself out of this situation, all while being such a good mom. There is only positivity in my mind with regard to Olivia. I hope she will be able to get a better job and affordable housing soon, and that her son stays safe and studies well in school.

Nathalie Loujein she gets free food, the state pays for her hotel. She was on food stamps but you gotta wonder why they got cut off. She lives in California with a vehicle so she could move or leave the state to go to a better place that's cheaper. Her go find me says she shops at trader Joe's and whole foods like Walmart dosen't have food her son can eat. California isn't a place she can afford. She needs to get a reality check and move to somewhere she can afford. This is a case of someone competent and able body abusing the state to fulfill her dream. If she lived in utah, Texas, Arizona, new Mexico, anywhere else she would be fine. She seems intelligent, accepting a 12$ an hour job is silly. She's hurting herself and people are feeding in and enabling her. She could go to utah where they have almost 0 unemployment and shed get 18- 20$ an hour easy. But she'll be in the same spot next year because she dosen't wanna work, she wants a hand out. I'm just saying how it is not how it might be.

I was born and raised in L.A. and ended up homeless. Couldn't get help from family or friends. I slept at the downtown train station and was able to get a one way ticket out of there. It was hard as a young woman on the streets...was attacked multiple times by men when I slept in Centinnela Park in Inglewood right down the street from my sister's house who wouldn't accept me. I've been gone over 10 years and was able to get my life on track, but I always remember that tables turn. Most of us are all just one paycheck away from being homeless. God bless you! New subbie.

This is more and more common. But it’s usually families paying out of pocket. I hadn’t heard of a state giving vouchers. Aside from not being able to afford an apartment, the other problems are qualifying for an apartment has changed as well. Your employment income has to cover three times the rent, your credit report has to be a certain score, and they take an average of all adults in household, plus first, last months rent, deposit and fee before approval. People are living in motels, extended stays are booked, and now motels are penalizing people who want to stay off street by if they book a room through hotels. Com etc trying to get a cheaper rate, they require a $250 hold on a credit card per stay. Affordable housing is a nightmare.
@klwthe3rd

And you failed to mention if the person has been evicted from a previous place. Just like your credit report, new landlords/property management will see that and flag it. I"m so glad i live in a home fully owned and paid for. taxes and light/water bill...done! Nobody's evicting me.

Charles E. Wilson, you are correct but its more than that. If you think anti-union conservatives are causing the homeless problem you should visit a west coast city run by liberals. The cities with the biggest homeless problem are all run by liberals. These cities tolerate or even encourage homelessness for political purposes. We are all being conditioned little by little to accept a new lower "homeless class." It's being normalized. This isn't a liberal or conservative issue, it's an issue of the elites versus the common people. If you want to reduce the numbers of homeless you have to offer affordable housing and treatment for health issues, but you also have to NOT tolerate people living on the street. We need a carrot and stick approach and for people to not buy into the false paradigm being sold to us.

But unions give the workers(low to middle class) protections and without those protections you see the business owners(the rich) steam rolling right over their workers. Unions provide better living wages, medical coverage and protections against firing without cause. Do you really think wealthy business owners would just GIVE these benefits to their workers if they weren't held to that agreement in a contract? Hell no. Unions are an important aspect of maintaining a growing, thriving middle class. It is a battle between the rich and the poor as you said, but that translates into the business management and the workers. The haves and the have nots. I'm very pro union.
@deanmiller4806
@deanmiller4806 6 лет назад
Kenneth White, I agree with pro union. In fact, Im in a union. My main point is maybe two fold: 1) the homeless problem is not made better by "just voting for liberals." The liberal bureaucracies in Washington Oregon and California have sat back and allowed homelessness to explode. They are exploitive and inefficient machines mostly interested in power and money. 2) You have to use the carrot and the stick approach. I believe in providing services and pathways to get people off the streets and into homes. There is a genuine lack of affordable housing all over the West Coast for example and probably the whole country. BUT... If we simply allow people to set up homeless camps in every green space in every park or even on sidewalks - as we often do these days in the name of "compassion" - this will only encourage more people to join the newly created homeless class. So yes make an offer of services & the a way out of homelessness, but if you set a tent up in a city park or if you think you're going to sleep on the sidewalk we must NOT allow that to happen. We need to make it hard and uncomfortable to be homeless not a matter of Lifestyle choice.

I understand why mom wants to provide nice things for her son, but giving him everything he wants is not the way to go. This is what my dad did when we were going through tough times, which only made his life more burdensome. Son only cares about materialisic things rather than how to help his mom... not good.
@zorazorazorzzora8333

I was thinking the exact same thing. The materialism is overkill, think I heard him say Gucci in his list of wants. I heard the word “ I hate” several times, it would have been nice to hear the statement “ I’m grateful for”…. hate is such a strong word, however, she’s entitled to her beliefs.. I raised my son as a divorced single mom and even if I were still married I promise you giving my son “ everything “ he wanted would be of little concern to me, very shallow… I educated my son about finances and made it very clear to him the difference between a need and a want.

Many folks who cannot make enough money to afford the cost of living in CA are leaving. They go to other states where there are jobs that support the cost of living. Making her salary, it is no wonder she cannot afford the $300 a month car payment, the $160 insurance (probably a new car that requires this) and other bills. I drive a 2000 Taurus that I bought for $1,900, do not own a TV, a dryer, a cell phone, and cut my own hair. I buy my clothes on eBay or a local thrift store. I do not have GPS on my car, or other electronic devices. I cook at home, and do not go to Denny's. I have a masters degree and own real estate, and work as a social worker. I live in Florida, which is pretty reasonable, but I cannot afford her car payment, nor would I try. Living frugally on a lousy salary is the only thing that can keep you from landing in a motel. Money management is a major part of life management. If you don't get the money part down, and make practical choices, things will not change. California (I was born there and left as a teenager) is squeezing the life out of it's residents. She needs to leave, and learn how to live below her means, not over it.
@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 6 лет назад
The money management issue is exactly what I addressed in my post for this woman. Getting a better job or getting additional donations doesn't mean anything if the person doesn't spend the money wisely. I have to live on a budget or else i would not be able to afford my lifestyle either. I think it's just a strong point to address since it often can lead to a domino effect downward if not learned at an early age.

tim mc, the real picture of homelessness is much more complex than Mark portrays in his videos. There are dozens of causes that result in people becoming homeless but one of them that Mark never shows is that people become homeless by choice. And some of these people are outlaws and organized into micro communities that become Outlaw homeless camps. Mark does good work in general, but ignoring this side of the story does not do justice to the entire problem of homelessness as a whole. As usual the best approach is to use the carrot and the stick.
