On Friday, April 18, the Los Angeles Port Police hosted Maritime Chokepoint Operation, a multi-agency event at the Regional Maritime Law Enforcement Training Center to conduct screenings for illicit radiation sources entering the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex. The Operation is part of the Department of Homeland Security Domestic Nuclear Detection Office's "Securing the Cities" Program, which awarded grant funding to the Los Angeles-Long Beach urban area for training and equipment to detect and interdict illicit radiological threats. During the live operation at the Port of Los Angeles, assets and personnel conducted radiation screening on smaller vessels entering the harbor. Maritime Chokepoint Operation targets all boats and ships under 300 gross tons that enter the LA-LB ports.
