I was there at Union Station that Friday. Daylights boiler was still hot. Got to jump up in the cab and look around. Came back on the weekend to watch the 8444 leave. Pretty cool memories!
Thank you so much I'm glad you enjoyed it. This is some of the last footage I ever shot with a very cheap Super 8 camera. The camera literally fell apart not too long after - I'm very glad I got them.
I was the engineer on the Coast Starlight that morning. I didn't get over there to see the other engines, I had work to do. Did anyone out there get any movies/pics of the Coast Starlight leaving that morning?
I took the I-15 freeway up the pass and that wasn't bad. Cajon Bl. which runs along the tracks was surely jammed. The turnouts and dead-end road parallel to the I-15 were like parking lots. There were helicopters in the air also. It was strange seeing a location that I had to myself many previous occasions jammed with people (that's the power of steam). However, as the video shows, I was able to get back on the I-15 and head north for the last shot in the high desert north of Victorville.
Its interesting you said that I-15 was bad because my brother was at Cajon that day and went to get onto I-15 from Cleghorn and he said I-15 was terrible. I also heard that people parked on I-15 and ran across the freeway with the CHP yelling at them to get in their cars.
That's correct - as far as I know the 347C and its B unit are in Sacramento at the State Railroad Museum and I assume they own them. I haven't been there in a while but I know they were there in the 1990's.
Good ear, the audio was definitely not prototypical and it was a big stretch to try to dub in all that steam action. This footage was some of the last silent Super 8 film I ever shot. Thanks for watching and commenting.
