Tom, this was one of your more challenging interviews. There's no doubt that Gary is an intelligent man. But, he has trouble clearly communicating his hypothesis. You did a masterful job in trying to move the interview to something useful for viewers, while also staying respectful to Gary. Starting around the 38th minute of the interview until the end of it, you and Gary finally were able to capture and convey something actionable to viewers. Although there are still a lot of unanswered questions related to why one person can eat a surplus of calories and not gain weight, while another person can be in a calorie deficit and still gain weight, this conversation did indeed provide some value in exploring different ways to think about this. Thank you for setting a great example of how to effectively summarize what a guest is saying, while continuing to gently tease out the knowledge and information you know they have. This isn’t easy to do, but you seem to have a knack for it.
I’m only 9 minutes into this and so far I feel like the guest has mostly just said that being in a calorie deficit isn’t the right way to lose weight? Comparing it all to starving people in a death camp🙃 my patience is dwindling as I’m listening to this so, I’m going to fast forward to 38 minutes. TY
Keeping insulin down has worked magic on my weight loss journey. I was suffering from obesity but now I have a normal weight of 74kg to 76kg for someone who used to be 115kg to 118kg. My current breakfast consist of 2 eggs only. My lunch is around 2pm which consist of carbohydrates,protein and fats (rice, potatoes, fish,red meat, chicken, etc) just a regular meal and I don't count calories. And my lunch happens to be my last meal of the day. I sometimes have unsweetened tea or unsweetened hibiscus drink after lunch. That has been my eating lifestyle for two years now. I don't exercise very much...I only walk for an hour as exercise three times a week. My weight is now normal and my energy levels high.
Everything makes sense in a hunter gatherer context. Our physiology evolved for whole natural foods that take a while to process and digest. Sugary foods like honey were rare. Sun, exercise, social bonding were the norm. The farther we deviate from our true nature, the sicker we become.
Honey is a natural whole food. Honey consumption is not rare in historical and current Hunter gather populations. This is reductionist thinking that leads to the incorrect axioms and an over correction in diet decisions. Honey has all kinds of nutrients including nitric oxide metabolites aid the circulatory systems. Honey is also a combination of glucose and fructose that alters our physiological response. Now processed sugar is a totally different story. And of course should be eliminated.
@@geekspeak1066 Honey, like meat, wasn’t consumed every meal or every day. It was a rare delicacy. Also, the glycemic index rating for honey is very similar to refined sugar. It may have some other health benefits, but the effects on the body are not much different from “added sugar”. Sugar isn’t inherently bad for you. It just shouldn’t be consumed to excess.

All I can say is, since my prediabetes and insulin resistance, I know exactly what Gary Taubes means. My metabolism, weight loss and gain have completely changed. It's not the only explanation, but hormones can have a huge effect!

@@jennjenn7862 false. Disrupt the brain and you disrupt the mind. There is a biological component to everything we do. Mental Illness wouldn’t be a thing, or drug induced mania, etc. All physical properties appear in conscious space. You cannot divorce the two.
The most important thing I've learned from Gary is this paradigm shift of no longer talking about calorie deficits and surpluses and instead on *how* our bodies create those deficits and surpluses, which in fact have less to do with how many calories we eat! What our bodies does with calories has more to do with what we eat than how much. You can starve rats and they can *put on weight* when they have brain damage to a certain region which controls hormones that regulate fat storage. You can actually be in a "calorie deficit" and yet be putting on weight. On the flip side, you can be in a "calorie surplus" but not gain any weight and instead use that food for energy and fuel and be bouncing off the wall. Your body in this case is not storing the food but immediately using it for fuel. I really hope that one day the rest of the world recognizes this. It's been 12 years since I read Gary's book Good Calories, Bad Calories and there's only a glimmer of hope, but the mainstream view is still focused on the oversimplification of merely calories in and out.
Im pretty sure were getting it right, i was on keto, ate more fat than i ever done, and the my weight was just freefalling. Now im doing OMAD because i cannot stick to keto for life, i do like me some pizza sometimes and other things, i have a 2 hour eating timefrime, and i do eat desert right after the meal, and im losing weight. so its all about that insulin
Fasting, lowering insulin, and Whole Foods. Also getting rid of parasites that cause sugar cravings and ruin sleep and gut health first. So the body can heal whatever it needs to before shedding fat.
I find it amazing that this idea is from a book in 2007 (with ideas that predate it by a long time) and we are still talking about it like it is a new idea.

I was on keto and fasted 18-6 daily for about six months and got incredible results! So much so that my GP couldn't believe my blood work and changes 3 months apart. Unfortunately for me I couldn't sustain the high fat, little or no carb meals as my stomach would want to throw up with high fat being consumed at meals; I have been like this since a child (though have been told I did eat butter like a fruit on it's own?) so ended keto lifestyle. However, I do believe in cutting out refine carbohydrates and sugars. I eat whole foods with some carbs and healthy fats. My protein source is from red meat which I have once a week and eggs, turkey, salmon other days. This is with fat on meat and eat the yolks of eggs. Raw nuts and plain Yoghurt if cravings get out of hand. I don't see carbs as the demon made out to be but the quality you consume and quantity. This along with daily exercise every day is more sustainable for me long term as a lifestyle.
Yees! Vegan keto is the case for me. I didn't do it for weight loss. I just feel so much better on it with my digestion and hormonal balance as a female who resistance trains daily and does intermittent fasting:) working really well for mental clarity
I didn’t grow up around so many fat people as apposed to these days, no one is talking about junk food marketing and the fast food that come to a new town where their is barely obese people but within 2 years fatter people start roaming around. I’ve seen this in provinces in Thailand. Good luck making things up in the name of science.

I'll share what is from my experience the best fat loss diet for me: WORKOUT DAYS (3-4 days a week/strength work) 1g LEAN protein per lean body mass,.5-1 gram complex carb per lean body mass, 30 g fat from healthy sources (avocado, olive oil, etc.); nonstarchy veggies in moderation to control insulin; NONWORKOUT DAYS (walk for 1 hour a day) cut carbs to under .5 per lean body mass and keep everything else the same. Accomplishes resistance towards metabolic adaptation and maintains low insulin along with a caloric deficit on non-workout days/maintenance on workout days.
I wonder whether thin people can ever truly understand that this isn’t just about eating less. Thin people should ask themselves how long they could last going hungry ALL the time...
This makes so much sense. My husband can eat twice as much as anyone I know and he is lean and has been his whole life. He is also full of energy. Same with our daughter. I can gain 10 pounds in a month if I let myself go for a little bit. I am constantly hungry and have very little energy. Have been like this my entire life. Only thing that has ever worked for me is going carnivore. It's boring as hell but it's the only way I have been able to lose weight. Keto, just helps me maintain.
here is something radical, try eating carbs and protein BUT keep you fats low. Carnivore and Keto are unsustainable, You wont eat like that for life. Every cell in your body runs on carbs. Please try this (50 - 60% carbs, 25% protein, 10-20% fat). Its actually very hard for your body to store carbs as fat, as long as your calories are at your maintenance level

An example is a family member ( in the next room, as we speak) still listens to her dietician as she slowly dies. Type 2, can not walk but a few steps using support, in pain, on 12+ meds. They're miserable but won't change from advice you & other dieticians are still giving after 50 yrs.
@@tubetime39 type 2 diabetes is easily fixable without metformin, I’m not a dietician but I have tonnes of medical knowledge. I have read countless peer reviewed studies about nutrition and have conducted many experiments on myself that have led to me curing my hashimotos disease that’s meant to have no cure, I don’t just take medical advice for face value I experiment and look at alternative methods. Medicine will only stop the symptoms but it won’t cure chronic disease. In terms of diet, I have done every diet under the sun, carnivore, keto, paleo, eggs only diet, low carb diets, juice diet, but once you understand how the body works, you will see that the body can easily process and digest carbs and protein. So higher carb, moderate protein, low fat will keep your cells working in perfect order. Now in case of diabetes, due to high blood glucose levels, the insulin receptors in your family members cells have become numb and hence shut off. Fastest way out of it would be to do some long water fasts. Start with 24 hr fasts, then extend to 48 hrs to 72 hrs. The second most powerful thing to do is lift weights after eating, doing this will allow excessive blood glucose to be used up by muscle tissue. Third thing would be to cut out fructose, so no candy cakes fruits honey table sugar etc, fructose is metabolised in the liver and can only store so much. That would be my advice, I’m no doctor. Yorfamioy member didn’t just eat healthy food, they probably ate junk food a lot too, they might also be overweight, they might have also never exercised. Your genetics only play a small portion in how your health goes, fasting exercising and solid nutrition that’s not a temporary fad diet will restore health. Just make sure they stick to something sustainable over the long term

I bailed out after 32 mins as I was still no the wiser as to what the cut and thrust of the hypothesis is. Eating 18 calories a day too many was the closet I came. Perhaps you can can ask your guests to start off with a 2 minutes summary of the main game. This guest just kept quoting empirical science experiments and formulae without ever getting to the point half way in. You even asked him directly at one point and he just continued to wax lyrical. Frustrating.
Just eat food and not food like substances. Buy whole food meat fish eggs leafy veg salad olive oil butter a little cheese. Processed carbs put insulin up which locks in the fat and makes weight loss difficult. High carb diets cause hunger hormones to increase too. Low carb you are less hungry no cravings. Not many of the insulin carb model doctors tackle carb addiction except David Ludwig but they don’t tell you what to do about it, The cravings come back as soon as you introduce carbs. @@stephenbarnes9096
I wish you had a video breaking down metabolism & how to speed it up to make weight loss easier bc it’s simply more than calories in calories out.. with a slow metabolism less calories doesn’t always help. Would be great to have someone super educated on that topic on to elaborate!
The best tip for fat loss - work with a NUTRITIONIST doctor! This is a health matter and varies depending on your health condition. It is very dangerous to do it on your own or based on some generic advice or a currently “popular” diet. Example: keto has been proven dangerous but a lot of people are still actively trying to use it for fat loss.
I’ve work with nutritionists before and I don’t often agree with their suggestions, which were outdated and based off the standard American diet. The best nutrition advice I’ve ever gotten was from my holistic doctor who first ordered blood work before suggesting changes to my diet. Not all nutritionists are the same, but you should do your research and request blood work to look at your hormones.
Nutritionist & doctors have not a clue. I'm old enough to have seen & listened to them going back 50 yrs. Look around. Mostly all of those unhealthy overweight type ll's have been to doctors and Nutritionist. Go to a Nutritionist and do the opposite of what they tell you. Turn their food chart upside down. I have proof sitting in the next room. They go to doctors almost weekly now and see a dietician on regular basis. They haven't been able to walk on their own w o a walker for 4 yrs, a cane prior to that. They keep getting worse. But I am the nut. Was told that 5 yrs ago. I am 3 yrs younger. This nut, 71, went for a 8mi bike ride yesterday. In warmer weather (42 & windy ystrdy,) it would've been 12 to 18+ miles. 20 yrs ago I couldn't have said the same. 15 yrs ago I quit listening to my dietician. It was hard after so many years but I was brainwashed.
PS my blood work keeps getting better each year and last time I about cried bc of what I had been led to believe and for all the people out there, including 6 siblings ( I am the only nut and only " lucky" one. But 20 yrs ago I was them, they forget ) Chol 145 in past 200 to 250> LDL 70 in past 120 to 150ish Tri's 56 ! Huge drop ! -100+ HDL 65 ! Huge rise !! I think I hit 40 once & 41 once on HDL. Normal was 30 to 35 at best.

Fix the fat storage problem. That is the solution. So how does one do that? No carbohydrates? No vegetables or fruit? It would have been a great video if there were solutions given in the video but I really came away feeling there is no hope.
i'l help you out. Fat storage happens when there are too many calories! If you eat for your maintenance then you can eat whatever you want. But your body likes carbs and protein over fat. When you eat carbs and protein, and keep your fats low, your body will process it well and give all your cells the energy they need quickly. However, if you eat something thats high in fat and carbs, it takes time for your body to seperate the carbs and fat, before burning it. Thats why when you eat a donut, its hard to stop at one. Your body is trying to digest this combination of food, but your brain doesnt get the signals it needs so, it thinks your still hungry, hence why you end up eating 6 donuts. Eat 50% - 60% carbs, 25% protein and 15-20% fat. And of course eat to your maintenance calories.

It’s about eating for life not for a few weeks to lose weight. I have tried every diet under the sun, keto, paleo, carnivore, low carb...but I have never felt better eating the way I mentioned above. High carb, moderate protein, low fat. My hair is thicker than its ever been, my stools are perfect, my energy is stable and I fell well, no other diet made me feel like this. Eat every 4 hours and stop 3 hours before bedtime

It's amazing how many times this guy said "we should do the studies" when talking about this stuff. Here's an idea, how about you do the studies BEFORE writing books and doing interviews? This is the problem with media these days, everyone wants to pretend they are an expert before they actually are. Crank it out, get it to the public, worry about facts later.
When he says we he's talking about the people who get grants and funding for studies. I'm sure if you gave him the money he'd be glad to do it. He has done a lot more than you ever have to look into, uncover & share with us on the issues being discussed.

Think of the money analogy: "If you want to get rich, just take in more money than you spend!" A true, but not useful, statement. It doesn't answer the "how" question. Taking in more money than you spend is very difficult for poor people (for tons of reasons) and consuming fewer calories than you burn is difficult for obese people (for tons of reasons). The thermodynamic argument is not useful for real-world solutions. Gary Taubes is the best! Thanks for having him in IT.
Tom is looking much thinner through his face, could it be intermittent fasting? Best tip I learned from this video is lowering insulin through cutting carbs and sugars is the way to get rid of stomach fat … keto is the way to get at the stored fat. I have good fat storage if there was ever a famine, but in this feasting culture I store fat.

Dont count calories ... no sugar ,no bread or potatoe, look into "Intermittent Fasting " eat only in an eating window ,two or one meals a day ,no snacking inbetween......works to restore health , loose weight
I eat red meat, bacon and eggs , olive oil and certain vegetables. I stay in ketosis. Sugar is my enemy; puts weight on and causes edema. Once in a while I binge on sugar and after I regret it and I feel like hell. I have insulin resistance and hypothyroid so I have to stay low carb just to maintain a healthy body weight. Hey Tom, love your videos. Can you do a video on how your body/brain changes with certain medications such as Seroquel and other psychiatric meds to help people who the medical community have come to think of as unimportant when it comes to medication induced weight gain. I would like to help my daughter who is kicking goals in life now due to Seroquel, but has to suffer the side effects of constant overwhelming hunger pains, slowed metabolism and impaired glucose and fat metabolism. Doctors are reticent to put her on any prophylactic Metformin or other drugs to help until she is indeed showing prediabetic/metabolic syndrome. Meanwhile she has gained 12 kgs in as many weeks even with caloric restriction and increased exercise. There must be a hack and I believe you can find someone who can help do it safely for these people who are already marginalised on multiple fronts. 🙂
I think one point that is missed is that there is a point to which caloric intake can be reduced to ensure weight loss in obese subjects, but this is not a normal level. Nor is it comfortable to the subject. Nor is there research into the malnutrition related health concerns that obese subject would experience if held at that low caloric level indefinitely. In my experience, the body will just set a new level of efficiency and start storing fat again. Likely robbing calories from other systems to do so.
Americans add sugar to everything, including savory food. When I asked why, they always said to balance the taste. What the heck is balancing savory and sweet when you're cooking savory food? Do people just don't think or everyone is a sugar addict?
The keto diet is so easy to sustain it not even funny ! After the SAD American diet than vegetarian and worsening prediabetes I switched to keto and intermittent fasting. Within 3 months my pre-diabetes was gone and blood work back to normal ! NO suger sweets carb cravings, eat good quality meats fats a few berries tubers nuts. Two meals a day spaced about 4 hours apart and am fully satisfied until the next day. Very sustainable! Much more so than the SAD American diet or vegetarian diets!
I'm only about halfway into this, but from what I understand it seems like if you just eat an extra 20 calories a day you can gain major weight throughout the years, am I hearing that correctly, or is he only referring to people that have difficulties losing weight? Any clarification would be helpful.

Right exercise and good balanced diet for sure. I keep telling my kids that it's not just about taste, nutrition is often times not tasty but very good to be healthy.
Part of it is how children are raised. If vegetables are introduced early and often then they tend to think that veg is tasty. But growing up eating these hyper-palatable, processed foods, then yeah, they would be more likely to push away veg and other natural foods.
Hadzar: one point is clear. They eat honey and everything you can find because of their hunger. BUT you just do not find more than we do in our abundance of calories. So it is not an achievement of the will not to eat further, but a circumstance of their environment!
I think it is some kind of add-on, which messes with your pancreas. French drink much water, which is good for pancreas But it has to be pancreas because of the insulin.
Does anyone else not think that it’s not food itself that’s the problem but the insane amount of chemicals/pesticides/hormones IN the western diet that causes us problems… this wasn’t mentioned at all in this chat, but clear that once a western diet is introduced it causes problems…. a better use of the word extrapolation, is in context of us causing more problems by ‘fixing’ a food supply that wasn’t broken, it is the industry that’s broken.
This guy is asking questions we already have well documented answers to. Most people who dont lose or keep weight is due to commitment and or emotional connection to eating or the circumstances around eating. There are exceptions that are connected to hormone imbalance as well as thyroid issues. Case closed. We know how to treat these conditions at that point it comes down to following thru with the changes necessary to create the change. We are in a weird time where we are over consuming new ideas so much that we create new ideas and push them even if they dont make sense. Results should drive trends not new to be new ideas. He asks why do indigenous people who have a way more active lifestyle, people who have to catch their own food not overweight....huh thats a tough one. I think the fitness and weight loss industry is so susceptible to these types of ideas because people try something and its not as enjoyable as cake so they choose cake. Its really that simple. You want results change that association to cake as death. Realize that it is taking your time away with loved ones, that it makes it impossible to play with your kids. Then you will have the motivation to follow thru with what we all know works not keep buying into these bs ideas. Allowing the easy choice to trick you is how you got there in the first place.
