Dear Shawn, my goodness do you talk sense! I entirely agree with everything you said. Although I’m a vegetarian of 40 plus years I still accept the necessity of killing to survive. At the moment I have a choice. Not everyone does. I know that if I had to I would kill for food to survive. If one kills a living organism to survive then one is duty bound to use as much of it as possible. I grow fruit and veg on a rented plot of land and love the connection with the natural cycle. It keeps me grounded. We should have respect for everything we consume or use. Can’t stand those who kill for sport, but that is nothing like those who kill for food - to survive. I have nothing but admiration for you.

I'm also a 40+ years vegetarian, and have a lot of energy and good health, but I think realistically everything eats something in the worlds food chain to survive and nature isn't necessarily kind. We have choices at this point in time to eat as we wish, and eating less meat is better for the world at least, with so much deforestation to plant crops to just feed farm animals. The way humans have populated the earth doesn't fit in with how other animals survive, we are greedy and wasteful most of the time and we are living off of other creatures without any thought to their needs. If you have a dog you will realize that all animals have human like traits and emotions which we are forgetting with factory farming methods. It is very calming watching Shawn's videos because it reminds us of how we used to live in a less populated world.

You might be the most logical and reserved vegetarian/vegan ever. I appreciate you being able to put aside your beliefs and try to understand why other might choose differently. Thats really important in so many aspects of life, trying to understand people on the other side of the discussion, because often times even though you disagree with them you may agree with a couple things they say which may change how you perceive people that disagree with. Sometimes, actually no most times both parties are better off when they give the other person the opportunity to express their views as well as give the other person the respect of trying to understand why the believe what they do. I think many people see photos of trophy hunters and assume that all who hunt do it for the sport and to be able to hang up some antlers in their cabin. When reality is that most people who hunt, hunt to put food on their table for there families. I hunt because I cannot let myself knowingly support the mass production of livestock that live in pitch black cages for their entire life until deemed good enough to be cut up and packaged. Ill never give up meat in my life on earth, but ill also never support the mass production of animals again in my life.

I saw something a couple of years ago that was a parody, but too many large city dwellers may really think this. Especially the liberal minds in the states. It goes like this. One day while reading the newspaper I noticed a rebuttal in the forum that went like this. " I am a firm believer that killing of animals to feed humans is absolutely wrong. It is not by any means humane. The animals need to suffer no longer for us. Everybody should just go to the supermarket and buy your vegetables and hamburger there, where it is made. Put an end to the killing. The farmers can get a job in the city doing something important." Education is a must. Too much concrete is a bad thing. I am happy I grew up during better times, in my opinion anyway. This is a long statement to just say I agree with you Sharilee. Thank you.

@@oldfart43311 Politics have nothing to do with food choices, if you believe that you're no different than the person in the article. Whom ever wrote it is probably not the brightest bulb in the pack, even millennials know that animals are grown on a large scale and slaughtered for food, is it necessary? yes but I think for health reason's we all need more diversity in our diets including plant protein. When we visited my grandmother, she would go to the coup and kill a couple of chickens for dinner, my mom as a young girl set traps, caught rabbits and squirrel's to eat during the depression, she killed them and cleaned them, cooked them, it was out of necessity, like Shawn states in this video, because we as a society have become removed from it, it makes it harder to deal with.

Some of the best meals I have had and shared with family and friends came from food gathered from my garden and the waters and woods I have been blessed enough to roam. Now that I am older and unable to get around as well i really miss the outdoors. I still get to wet a hook from time to time and enjoy some freshly caught fish. I remember when I (a city kid) was 19 sitting in a church meeting in a small town in Rexburg Idaho seeing a grown man (potato farmer) break down crying and sobbing as he proceeds to tell the other men in the room that he wasn't able to find and kill a deer and how his family won't have meat for the Winter after which a handful of men stood up and said that they were willing to share a portion of their successful kills to help this man's family. One of the men said he'd share if the crying man's wife will make her famous cinnamon rolls for him. With gratitude the man balled louder but was able to control himself and promised cinnamon rolls for everyone. Prior to this experience I was a firm believer that no animal should be killed for any reason, but given this new and unexpected perspective I had to re-evaluate my original feelings, because I wouldn't want any man to feel inadequate because he's unable to feed his family with limited resources.

I remember hearing you say, that the man, whose cabin you visited in Alaska, would go to the scene of where he had heard hunters and salvage for food, from what they 'left behind'. As I see you doing, using everything of the food you kill or harvest, is in my opinion being very honorable to the animal or source. I lived and worked in Europe for almost 30 years. I learned to cook and love liver, kidney's and all the cuts most Americans have never even tried. Broth from beef bones and cold cuts from the blood. The pelts and having nothing to 'throw' in the trash is a good thing. My deep disregard goes to the trophy hunters all over the world. I believe they have put a dirty smudge on people like you, who hunt the way our forefathers did, to eat and prepare for winters. Thank you for your honesty and kindness towards nature.

Very well said and points well taken. One thing I don't understand is most of the same people that complain about hunters and harvesters don't complain about the waste they produce themselves. Most hunters and harvesters are very frugal and don't take more than they intend on using and also try to make use out of the majority of anything they take. So instead of demeaning these people, the ones complaining should open their minds and eyes they might just learn something from them.

Susie Q, I grew up on a farm and have spent all my life in rural America. We grew crops for market and for our table. We grew livestock for our table, as well. Always taught to respect the origins of our meals, whether from the fields or the forest. Many, many years ago my father explained the difference between taking a life for our table and taking one for sport or other reasons that left the resources of that death unharvested. As I still live in "farming country", greatly respect those who hunt and fish to put food on their tables. Mourn the loss of life when I see deer carcasses dumped along side the road by so called "sportsmen", often with only the rack and/or prime cuts removed. Mourn, too, for children who don't know that potatoes grow in the ground. (Children from a big city visiting a neighbor.) Those who don't know honey comes from living creatures. Those who believe it comes from a plastic bear shaped bottle in a store. Stopping here, as the list can quickly grow too long. Especially, when I think back to times when the vast majority of the people lived far closer to the land.

Gardening, fishing and hunting are good ways to be involved with the cycle of life and appreciate the cost of it. Thanks, Shawn. Cheers.

Myself and my finance are a young couple and have been saving up for a home and like it was said on the video, we can not afford it due to the price of properties. It’s been a long two years in saving up and we’re still on the road to saving for our “one and done” house. For us, buying a home has put everything on hold. We want to be married at our home so it’s cheap and make memories where we plan on living for the rest of our lives. Once this happens we plan on kids being in our lives shortly after. We want to have enough property also so I can make a short RU-vid series about planning, and making your own hardwood forest. It’s partially inspired by this channel and the My Self Reliance channel. It’s been a dream of mine and society has seemed to have put it on hold.

At 55 years of age, I harvested one of our chickens for the first time. After watching the way our supermarket food is grown and raised, It wasn’t hard to do it better then they do. When it came time to take the birds life that we had raised from a chick, it wasn’t easy and I didn’t enjoy it one bit. But I worked my way thru the process and appreciated the meal it provided. More and more, I'm coming to the realization that our food system isn’t at all secure. With the corporatization of just about every aspect of food production, it wont take to many disasters to shake things up. The recent flooding up in Nebraska, drought, New Castle virus in So. Calif, etc. I can go on and on but it wont take much. With that said, there is always hope and we are always learning. Gotta get out and try be more self reliant. Thanks Shawn

Thank you for this, Shawn. I, too, struggle with the knowledge that in order for me to eat, an animal has to give its life to that process. It’s something I think about on pretty much a daily basis even though I’m aware that my somewhat emotional response to this basic fact isn’t reasonable. Still - to look into an animal’s eyes .... ANY animal ... and see the life dwelling within is testimony to its right to be alive. Your very honest, down-to-earth commentary about making the choice to accept this process, yet also respect it by making sustainable choices, is extremely helpful. Once again your own life experiences and knowledge are an excellent teaching tool for those of us who haven’t traveled your same pathways. Many thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom.

AMEN! When teaching, I mentioned eating deer and (of course, thanks to Disney), they were horrified because they have such gorgeous eyes. Well, I have raised goats and cows and they have gorgeous eyes too. Cindi, just seems to be that females have more adversity to killing then males. I know as a young mother, all of the farms brought their animals once a year and the men slaughtered them out back and the men who were butchering, asked us out in a warmed room at tables how we wanted our meat cut to put up. And, we wrapped the meat in freezer paper. I do not know if this is typical, but PA, it was. It was not a one family thing where even the children had to do it. And, some of the meat was put in big smokers that everyone shared.

Hi Shawn, Thanks for recording your life... i find it really motivating. I have been watching you for quite awhile now. Loved watching you build your log cabin. My husband and I live in an old log cabin (Allan MacKie -1950's) on the edge of Francois Lake, BC. We have been living rural for 25 years and have grown our own food and harvested our own chickens, goats and ducks. Now that our family is grown there is no need to have meat birds yearly. Although i don't like killing our animals i know that they have been treated well and had good food, pasture and quality of life. Even in death they are treated humanely. I would rather eat meat that i know where the animal comes from and how it has been treated. I get that it is a luxury that some people do not have access to, but it is also a choice to live this way. There are many conviences and amenities that we give up to live a rural more sustainable life. And after 25 years we are still working at being more sustainable. I wish you and your wife well in your continued efforts for a healthier, more holistic life. Bern and Mark.

Luckily it was about 15 years before I had a quintuple heart bypass and a stroke during surgery which stole some of my eyesight. That has changed our lives drastically but also changed it for the better. No more fast or junk foods. Local farm pasture raised beef, pork, lamb, goat and poultry and eggs are now our diet. Only whole grain home baked breads. We feel so much healthier, no colds. I also feel better knowing the animals that supply our foods our raised humanely by a farm family whose whose ancestors farmed along side mine. We can not get to our cabin very much now because of taking care of our elders, but it should be getting better soon. Your videos take me to our piece of the woods and keep my spirits up. Hope your wife will enjoy all the work you have done for her comfort. Have a great new decade and chapter to your lives. Bill

You're saying we've been dumbed-down, lost connection with the land, with the means from which our daily necessities have come; the raw material origins. It's interesting how crisis draws back to basic; the "little things" as you said. And then back to the Originator Himself. For thousands of years man was rural, living connected to the land, and in relation to his Creator. Last year my nephew asked if we could go and build a lean-too and camp out in the wood up at 'Grandpas Cabin'. Because of this one innocent thought, i have come to enjoy the solitude and relaxation of spending time out in the woods by my self, making a shelter and a camp that I, and we can and have enjoy. To witness the beauty of nature, and be proud of the accomplishment and skills we have learnt. You among some other on RU-vid have thought me many things, and have inspired me to try new things, to grow a vegetable garden along the side of my condo for the people of the building to enjoy and benefit from. I have learnt the apparent lost art of canning and preserving my own foods, and the joy that can bring. Being a butcher by trade i also find no joy in the taking of an animals, but know the necessity of the task. Saying to keep up the good work would probably be not the right thing to say, but keep doing what you love, and thanks for having us along.

I would never change how I was raised or how I raised my family...and how after almost 10 years I am living that life again..starting over at 60. I respect everything and anything used sustainably to put food on my table. We donate when we have extras, accept items donated and share the end result with them. Our footprint should be fleeting on the soil, but a lifetime in our hearts!

I completely agree with your perspective, and it's really nice to hear others who think similarly. I've thought a lot about the detachment that people are experiencing right now. Having been convinced that the objective of life is to work, make money and consume, it's no wonder they're confused and depressed, and are inspired when they find your channels. I love to hear Jordan Peterson speak too. I saw a saying that goes, "Nature isn't a place to visit, it's home." I love that.

One of the things that I appreciate most about your channels is the deep respect and understanding for life that you share with us. You are quite right that we need to become more conscious about our consumption. I think that one of the reasons that there is so much food waste (especially in urban areas) is that we no longer have direct understanding of what is required to grow and to harvest our foods (be they vegetable or animal).

Shawn, thank you for bringing up an important topic of losing connection with nature... matter of fact, a lot of things with today's hectic lifestyles. Be it family, birthplace, friends, hobbies... everyone makes some sacrifice to advance in some other area. You nicely described the reality that we shouldn't be ignorant about our decisions (i.e. food outsourcing), but be thankful we are in position we can avoid hunting and gathering for survival. Hence, when we have a chance to give back, it should be natural to make an effort. Plant a tree, donate to animal shelter, whatever ticks one's ticker... and trying to reconnect with nature in any small way possible. That way we'll at least be conscious that we are not entitled to nature by default, but inherited it into care for future generations. Can't be so selfish to consume everything and leave a wasteland when we pass. Continue being gentle with your audience and your care will reach far. Love how you often raise a topic which makes a lot of sense in today's alienated society.

Yeah... Believe it's called living life with both hands. Is what you're doing. All have ever promoted in others is to be more aware of ourselves. Ourselves individually and of those whom we care about. Am paraphrasing, but it's the time honored message, "The unexamined life is not worth living." The more aware we are of ourselves and our world, the more we'll strive to do better, to be better and to help those around us to do better.

I agree that we all need to do what we can to survive and I must add the important to those that survive on supermarkets for food (I do) is to inform (the supermarket), "I want and need the product you sell, but I do not want the packaging in plastics, Styrofoam, etc." So much is over packaged. Our wildlife are suffering now, our children are also suffering, but our kids have inherited this environmental mess. Your right about them not partaking in nature, it is less known to them. They do not see difference. Then and now.. Love both your channels Shawn. I appreciate your informative channel, your love for nature, and your drive to build your own life the way you see fit is inspiring..

More and more commonly, there are kids growing up who never saw a farm animal, never caught a fish at the end of a fishing pole, never went hunting with their father, never saw their mother cutting up a chicken or a rabbit to feed their family, or never saw a butcher doing his work behind the counter at the local meat store. Sad really. And not a thing unusual or shocking about the process. Thank you Shawn, for bringing this to our attention. It needed to be said.

Shawn , I totally agree with you. I myself hunt and fish and love outdoors. I grew up loving nature. Nowadays we gotta drive 2 hours to hunt deer. Our city have grown so much in last 10 years. We ranked top 5 " best city to live in U.S." The younger generation are all about city life and technology. That"s why its so important for us to keep nature alive for our future generation. My girlfriend loves to hike in the mountains near where my Mom's family from. Each time we hike I teach her about trees, snakes.what is poison or not etc. Its a great feeling to share knowledge that been past down from our ancestors. Nothing beats being in the woods. I always respect everyone opinions and belief. For me its a blessing to have a knowledge to hunt and fish for survival. Also all the food nature provide us. When I'm not in the woods, I"m at home watching your video. Keep doing what you always do. I enjoyed the shows! Btw if you can handle spicy peppers, We are the Home of the World's Hottest Peppers. Great points to this topic. I find thanking the Source of all is a good way to honor all the life taken for consumption. Being an old cyborg now, I do rely on others mostly for my foods. I remember growing up on a farm, killing chickens and pigs and ducks and bunnies for our meals or for freezing and canning. It was the natural thing to do. Life consumes us too. Our hair, our flakes of skin our breath goes out freely for birds and insects and plants to use. There is a circle of life we are in. Ok got me going here. Good topic that we all should be reminded of now and then. Shawn, You are speaking this topic right on time. Thanks. 😺💞🎃

I think that a lot of people get mixed up with harvesting your own meat from livestock because a name is assigned to it. It becomes a pet once you've named it (in most peoples minds). There is less of an emotional connection if you don't name it, and then it's easier to carry out the task.

The way the First Nation or American Indians (whatever is the "correct" term now) have such regard for the creatures that sustain them, and pray over their departing spirits, and try not to needlessly cause them suffering--that's how I see it done right. One must be grateful to God for what we have, and that's why I still say Grace before eating, if silently. I'm grateful for all that is provided, even if it came from a garden I worked--I didn't make this world. Whether in feast or famine, homegrown and prepared or not, I know someone else is providing, and must be thanked. Shawn, you are grateful for everything, and do not act irresponsibly towards nature. You are an example we can follow with a clear conscience.

I’m glad your perspective very much mirrors my own. Only I live in NYC and get crucified for looking at reality differently. Nearly all modern “efficient” systems are based on destruction. It’s either off site or deferred. Prosperity and mass production are the main culprits of loosing the connection with the natural world. With advanced moral standards, which are the result of prosperity, we have started to reject natural processes. Advancing many animals to pet status, rejecting the natural concept of natural selection and survival of the fittest. Even the idea of equality is based on prosperity. As human we are equal. But our culture, skills, knowledge, mental capacity, work ethic, vision, natural skills and abilities all set us apart. What makes one person successful, is mostly based on creativity, vision and drive.

Very good video. I personally was never a hunter, I have never had a problem with the concept, or the people that choose to hunt. My father , grandfather and two older brothers are hunters. I just didn't get involved for any reason other than was busy hangin out with friends. I belong to two conservation/ gun clubs and they are always trying to get more youths involved in hunting and fishing. They have officers from fish and wildlife visiting a lot trying t encourage interest in these things. I have eaten, over the years, different game my father harvested. Duck, Pheasant , Deer and Rabbit, to name a few, I liked all of them, but still wasn't interested in hunting. I fish occasionally. Now, more than ever, I wish I had learned these vital skills as a youth .The way things are going in society, it wont be long before we will need these basic skills to survive. Just as important is the different ways to preserve the fish and animals we harvest. I have learned a lot about these things from you as well as other people that want to be self reliant. Reminds me of a line from the movie Outlaw Josie Wales, when he meets chief Dan. The indian chief says, " I used to know these things, before I became civilized"!! Keep up the excellence. Thank you.

Nice video, many do not understand or know where our food comes from and how it is prepared. I remember my childhood roots and how we had a garden and processed out meat each year. How we harvested berries for jams and the hands on canning of our foods was a way we kept our cost down and appreciated what it took to feed our family. We have an impact and foot print during our lives but the reality is we need to be careful how much we affect the planet we live on. Again thanks.

Thanks for sharing the truth about sustainability! For some reason your talk reminds me of a story I saw of a wild lioness who adopted a baby gazelle, (apparently, she lost her cubs and the gazelle lost its mom, and they happened upon each other at just the right time for bonding)and wasn't hunting, just starving slowly... until a male lion killed the gazelle, thus bringing reality back to the lioness... some people who saw the film were angry at the male lion, who was behaving in a healthy way... though the cycle of life is very difficult to accept at times... I like what you said about feeling the full spectrum of emotions that come with harvesting our own food...I day that many of us forget the truth of the meat we eat... to our shame, we deny ourselves the grief and gratitude that are just as much a part of our relationship with nature and the joy and abundance...

You nailed it buddy. This is in no way the world I was born into, in many ways. In my time as a child, in a small town, every adult knew who I was and who my parents were and they thought nothing of correcting me and keeping me safe. They would teach us important skills and out door sports such as fishing and hunting ect. Today here, kids have to pay to play school sports, too many parents are working so much, they no longer use nature as a teaching tool, therefore a whole generation loses a simple yet very important learning curve in life. That being a connection with natures and those with the same mind set, rather than wasting away in a bar everyday in their free time. I must say, I envy you, I see it as a blessing you lost your business, for you gained so very much more. Continued success my cyber friend.

It seems that Shawn may avoid frank discussion of his religious beliefs, or lack thereof. Probably too much of a turn off for the secular majority here on RU-vid. I am skeptical that he does not recognize Christ as lord and savior, and find his base philosophy of "self reliance" to be one that is ignorant, and largely devoid, of God's truth (the Word).
