+Ashley Gleason Either you are woefully misinformed, or you know the truth and are purposefully asking a misleading question. Either way, the premise of your question is false. The LDS church does not insist that its members not research their history.
Loved the interview. Seriously though, if these 2 squeaky clean perfect mormons can leave the church, ANYONE can. This gives me hope that people will continue to leave. Even the most mormon of the mormons.
The internet has been a very helpful tool in getting knowledge in people’s hands. It’s both helping get people out of cults as well as into cults, unfortunately.
You can see that tons of genuine Mormons go out and investigate their doctrine and history. Then they find out it's all bunk, which makes them leave, I can't imagine how difficult it is to leave the LDS when it's all you know. My hat is off to people like Tanner.
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 New International Version (NIV) 5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun. My knowldge increased when I was aware of this..my study began..
Im 16 almost 17 and ive grown up Mormon. I don't believe in the church anymore for the same reasons he mentioned. I hate that i didn't know about all the history growing up. I feel like it was hidden away from me and that wrong.
*avayamms* If you've "grown up" Mormon, how do you get by and get this far without hearing of it? Are issues never brought up? Glazed over? A different narrative given to you as the truth? Have you not run into "anti" Mormon people that would have called your faith into question...like street preachers, those people who go to Manti to witness? Have you had no access to the internet, because obviously you're on it now. Please explain how *TRUTH* can escape you your entire life, *ESPECIALLY* that you've "grown up" a Mormon. Thx.
@@Kman. severe whitewashing, deception, gaslighting, and obscurantism. You grow up not hearing about it for years and decades. And if you happen to read about some of these things on a limited scale, they wouldn't faze you much. I read "anti-mormon" material accidentally when I was pre-teen and it didn't mean much to me at the time. I only meaningfully found out the issues with the Church last year 2019 after decades of being in the Church.
Xtian C. ...I totally agree. Their desperate and convoluted apologies are a laugh riot. They know the whole religion is a scam but they are stuck with it. I hope they feel good when they tithe and give their hard earned money to a transparent hoax. lol.
If you had a prospective guy who you like but says, “whatever you do, don’t google me. There are anti-me on the web, and just don’t believe a single person who says one word bad about me. Even if they have known me for years, and are actually related to me.” That would be a HUGE red flag.
This is so friggin true. The rules at byui drove me crazy for my three years of studying there, and I followed the stupid rules all the way up until my last year when they cut my major unannounced. It's a weird unique environment and it really can only be experienced there.
I served at the same time as Tanner and yes it was crazy how many kids got baptized by the elders and me as a sister went after the men. We would get “fame” in the mission for lost baptism and even more “fame” if you baptized a man.
Awww, tanner is so cute 😂. Just finished their update vid. I’m glad I watch that one first and then travel back in time to see how much change has occurred. These two have grown up into some very impressive adults. Real thinkers..I’m inspired to get smarter 😂🍻
I wish I could have found out when I was young like you that the church isn't true. I got my shocks in middle age. If the internet had been around when I was young, you can bet I would have left the church.
it's amazing what the internet has done for our lives. I think of all the old faithful Mormons that I used to know. If they had lived in this time, the intelligent ones (and I knew many) would have left the Church. Many would have embraced another form of Christianity, but I can understand why some in bitter disillusionment would have abandoned religion.
+Klarity*11 Had my mother been made aware of the historical facts she would never have joined , I was bitterly disillusioned and my spiritual beliefs are in transition at this point not sure on the outcome at this moment in time...

Wow, wow, wow! I love the section titles! This must be the work of Carah. I remember listening to this a long time ago. So nice to go back and see deeply into that mega length interview and be able to find the nuggets I'm looking for. Yah Carah!
OK, that's awesome! It's 7:20 in the morning on a Saturday and the MoSto crew noticed my comment. Do they ever sleep? Cool! So are you guys going back to section up the entire catalogue? I hope so because it makes me want to go back and re-explore it all.
I have to say I agree about the whole mission thing. It was about numbers, lessons, baptisms, etc etc. I got zero baptisms and I was happy because i did not guilt people but gave them agency to listen or not. It is totally different.
I was annoyed by the way certain members in leadership roles who had treated new members in the church with contempt and derision. Also, I had started to question the book of Mormon too. Some of the pretentious members presumed that all new members had a sordid disgusting lifetsyle. I had no addictions at all. Except that I enjoyed drinking coffee and a can of Pepsi now and then. They all had this sanctimonious attitude towards single adult members who unemployed or earned a low income too.
That's what I disliked most. At school there was always the mormon table and this insincere love for others. There were great people, but a lot of people don't get it.
WideTubeVision4 oh my gosh Yass and then those snobby asss girls who have grown up in the church and would have their own click at church activities while the newer concert would be excluded
@letsstartadialogueeh7692 yes! The disingenuous mormon kids at school. I was in the same ward as them but I wasn't Molly mormon enough to be included. They were rather rude.
My roommate and I did the math and assuming it takes about 50 seconds per baptism (in and out, fumbling to find hand grips, prayer, dunk) it would take about 159.54 years to baptize 1 billion people assuming you never stopped.
My mission president was all about numbers as well. Not just for baptisms, but of the missionaries as well. They encouraged us to go out even if we were sick. The day that I found out my grandma had passed, I was in the house crying (p-day) and the assistants called because they had found out and instead of trying to comfort, they told me that my president and God would want me to go out and work anyways. As a convert of only about a year and a half at the time, I remember thinking, “this is all I was that whole time?” It was like peeling back the curtain in the wizard of oz. I never felt less cared about in my life than as a missionary.
John Lee stfu! Like seriously why are you so hateful? Either you are delusional or a big troll. And yes everyone is worth caring for Cos everyone was saved by Jesus Christ and we all deserve to be cared for.
You kids and your internet. When I was young and curious, I had to make up my own anti Mormon doctrine. And if you wanted to get excommunicated, there was no namby pamby silliness like with John Dehlin. You had to have unmarried sex, or kill somebody. When I was a Priest, if you stuttered while blessing the sacrament, you started over from the very beginning and not just from the last sentence. I once witnessed a fellow Priest have a nervous breakdown after the sixth time starting over on the prayer. You kids today don't know how good you got it.
+Dan Hildreth Nope We do not baptize dead people it's all lie what gave you that idea? Joseph Smith only has one wife and was sealed to her only! These are all fabrications, your point of Jesus and Satan being brothers is crazy talk we LDS do not teach this nor believe it! That would be anti Christ talk!
Maren Jenson Me too, I remember this clearly. We were told it was too important to mess up, as it had to be perfect. And one of the priests had a stuttering problem. For some reason, they thought it was a good idea to have him bless the sacrament often. Then again, there were only a few young men 12-18 in that branch. I swear, people don't realize that this brand of "attaining perfection" does indeed cause massive mental health problems and actual nervous breakdowns for people. As it's impossible to be perfect, but the bar is so high that for some, it causes very real problems when they can't attain it. And often it's over ridiculous stuff that shouldn't matter, not actual sins. Other times, it's over things you cannot choose, like with LGBT people. For them, often, leaving the church becomes the only viable option when it comes to mental health. Moreso for trans people than gay, but it still applies nonetheless, as even being celibate, you're an outsider. You're not like everyone else, and constantly struggle with just wanting to live your life. The struggle is very real, and rarely discussed *within* the culture. It's always "pray and have faith," "follow the commandments," etc but none of that will fix many of these issues. Issues that shouldn't even be issues.
IDK, I had professor there that gave us a take-home mid-term test with strict rules about timing and breaks etc, who later emailed the entire class that "I know some of you cheated" and that he will tell everyone's bishops. I call that an abuse of an "honor code"
+M Jones Still haven't answered my question. What is the superior truth you have discovered. If Mormonism is a false cult, what is the correct, superior truth you have found?
Byu Idaho sounds like a nightmare. Who the hell has a curfew when they're in college. That's bullshit. It would be a nightmare to try to date a girl if you are going to that school no thanks.
Despite how strong societal beliefs and biases were in olden times God would always have had the eternal knowledge and perspective to know as well as we know now that skin color is about as relevant a personal trait as hair or eye color, so why would white skin have EVER been a requirement to be eligible to attend the Mormon temple or be ordained to the priesthood? (Hint: It NEVER would have been. NOT EVER.)
What is your purpose in baptism. In the Christian tradition that is a serious committment to Christ and there must be descipleship and learning that follows the baptism.
My testimony part two I began searching for a Church which taught we are saved by Christ's grace through faith and where saving faith is a verb not a noun nor a one time event. I continued reading and studying my scriptures. In John the Bible proclaims " in the beginning was the word" ; the Bible also testifies " there is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism, " . All of these Christian Churches teaching opposing interpretations could not all be correct nor true. It is a factual impossibility . Christ said " I am the way, the truth , and the life" . I was 28 and working as a salesman. I visited hundreds of homes biweekly selling food. A few of the families began to stand out to me. They demonstrated the fruits of righteousness, of following Christ. No drinking alcohol, no smoking, purity until marriage, education was stressed ,no cussing nor inappropriate movies , keeping the Lord's day Holy, tithing, strong families built on love and Christ's teachings. Finally, I asked each family ,one after the other what there secret was? Each of them were Mormon families. Impossible, I thought ! I was taught by Catholics and Baptists the Mormon Church was a cult ! How could a cult demonstrate the fruits of righteousness? It didn't make sense. I like to study religions so asked how I could learn more about there faith and Church? They were excited to say the least. They set me up with a couple of their Missionaries . In our first meeting they taught me about Joseph Smith and his first vision where he saw Jesus Christ standing on the right hand of His Father. Two separate personages . Jesus was in the express image of His Father as Hebrews declares. To my surprise I had no problem with what they were teaching . I felt at peace. After all Stephan ,when he was being stoned ,looked up and saw Jesus standing on the right hand of the power on high. Moses spoke to the Lord face to face as a man speaks to a friend. Jesus said he would be on the right hand of the Father in eternity. The Bible declares God is the same yesterday, today, and forever and God is not the author of confusion. This vision was brought about by Joseph Smith reading in the Bible from James 1 vs 5 " if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not but let him ask in faith and it shall be given him." Ask God directly, having faith in Christ , amazing! God keeps His promises!! Right! Then it happened . The Elders said they were glad I was soaking up what they were teaching but I needed to gain a Spirit born testimony . Simply deciding the LDS Church was true was not enough . They showed me in the back of the Book of Mormon a similar promise from God as was-in James. It said to study the Book of Mormon and then ask Heavenly Father , having faith in Christ , with real intent , if the words of the book are true and through the power of the Holy Spirit I would know it was true directly from God. They said I could know the truth of all things through the Holy Spirit. The Bible proclaims this and so does the Book of Mormon. I could know all of the Churches teachings were true using God's system. I had never been taught in the Catholic nor the Baptist Churches I could take their interpretations directly to God and through the power of the Holy Ghost I would know they were true. In fact I was taught an objective process instead of a subjective process. I was determined to place my faith directly in Heavenly Father , having faith in Christ. I was about half way through the Book of Mormon when God answered my sincere prayers. I had been fasting and praying with real intent . All of the sudden my soul was filled with the most divine feeling of God's love and God did brand His truth on my heart. God's presence poured down upon me and was within me. As Jeremiah described ,the word of the God was as fire in my bones. I knew the Book of Mormon was true . I knew Joseph Smith was a Prophet . I knew the LDS Church was true. As sure as Moses's experience with the burning bush and the great I AM . I knew and will always know. The Holy Ghost testified to me with power and love. I have since come across another scripture in the Bible commanding us to go directly to God for our testimonies. Isaiah 8 vs 19-20 Should not a people go to their God ? For the living to the dead ? To the law and the testimony ? If they teach not this it is because there is no light in them. Brothers and sisters I testify to you " the LDS Church is true, the Book of Mormon is God's word as is the Bible; as long as it is interpreted correctly, Joseph Smith was a Prophet called of God and Christ Church is led by a Prophet today, I testify marriage can be forever as families can be forever, procreation can be forever. God did not command you get married and be fruitful and multiply to take this most wonderful blessing from you at death. God hates divorce . Why would He divorce everyone? I testify Heavenly Father lives and loves you ! Jesus is the Christ! He lives and loves you ! They promise to answer your sincere prayer . "Saved by grace through faith " I leave my testimony with you in the name of Jesus Christ ! Amen The Wilder family and most of the other x Mormon's simply never had the humility nor faith to gain a Spirit born testimony of the LDS Church nor of the Book of Mormon. They , like many other Mormon's who grow up in the LDS Church ,assume they have a Spirit born testimony without ever fasting and praying and gaining one. They never really understood Christ's atonement and continue not to understand it to this day. "We are saved by Christ's grace through faith" . We do our best to keep God's commandments all of the time and draw closer to Him through our obedience and Christ saves us all the while as we seek to live after the Spirit and not the flesh. Christ did not suffer so horribly to change God's commandments into mere nice ideas we can pick and choose from. Our relationship with Christ has everything to do with what we do for Him and what He does for us as we walk hand in hand. God's commandments are His plan for our happiness . Fast and pray and you can know this is true through the Spirit of truth. You can know the truth of all things through His Spirit of truth. The Spirit testifies with love and power. You will know , not merely believe. Love y'all !!!
How do you get that far along in being a Mormon w/o having heard about blacks and the priesthood, the polygamy and such with Joseph Smith and other damning issues? I mean, the guy by his own admission was *BATHED* in Mormon teachings his entire upbringing, yet these things didn't come to light till he was in *COLLEGE* ? Especially in the age in which we live w/technology. Do most Mormons take what is spoon fed to them as the sole truth and they never even desire to learn things independently?
It was a lot more hidden in the nineties. When the internet became better and more widespread, the church was forced to open up and make a lot of excuses as all their dirty laundry suddenly caught up. Plus, that's not exactly the kind of thing people like to talk about. In seminary they teach you to seek truth from "divine sources" -- if it's antimormon its untruthful and motivated by SATAN, so he probably didn't feel comfortable looking at outside sources.
It’s a cult, they are super good at hiding things. They tell you if you read, watch, listen to things critical of the church you’re inviting satin into your life.
@@Kman. I know, I know. But if you see something critical about the Church you are taught that if you consume that content you’re inviting Satin into your life. True story, when I was nine I went to a sleep over with some older girls in the neighborhood, they weren’t members of the church and wanted to watch a scary, R rated movie - I knew I shouldn’t but I so wanted to fit in with these older cool kids that I went along with it. A few days later my baby brother, who was 8 months old, got very sick from spinal meningitis & almost died. I spent years thinking that it was my fault for watching the movie. That I had invited Satin & evil into my life and almost got my brother killed. The Church really mess with your head.
@@jacksonthedoggy I don't doubt you for a moment, and those SAME things happen with those leaving OTHER cults/cultish churches that mask themselves as Christian.
How does one know and trust that ALL 27 books of the New Testament are God's Written Word, and that no books have been left out the are (out of 200+ early Christian writings) ?

People leave churches all the time. For everyone that leaves, another one joins and the cycles goes on. I doubt it is losing the millennial generation, but it is losing some millennials.
What I want to know is where you find God after you leave the false doctrine (cult)? There are many fine things about being Mormon... Christian churches don't have the family emphasis, activities, outreach to the needy, political activism, aggressive teaching of the Bible, etc. So how do ex-Mormons fill the void?
Dawn Katz That. is an EXCELLENT question.. I haven't been in the LDS church for years.. And I had MANY friends that weren't Mormon. But some people I know who have left, literally sit at home sad on Sundays missing their culture, even if they don't miss their religion.
There are good Christian churches but you have to find the right church for you. Some are too big and it's harder to connect. Some are too small and you'll find there are some people who don't want to connect and just want to be fed the word then get out. One would have to "shop" churches to find a home where they can find that connection. I think a person's nature is to be loved and connection is a huge part of that. The LDS church is notorious for that and it is a beautiful thing but as good as that is, a false gospel doesn't get you to God in heaven for eternity. I've heard some people are never near other people and when they go to church, they get a hug from a brother or sister and that's the only connection they get. It's a sad but true fact. We try our best to focus on groups meeting together to do life together, families with children so they grow knowing who their savior Jesus Christ truly is, youth activities so kids can bond & learn to trust each other and any other kinds of connection. I'm personally meeting with the guys (mostly from church) at a gun range to connect and in two weeks grilling with families from church. That's my family. I have my family, my church family and work family. I, like our church, focus on that connection. That love for one another as commanded. Which is not hard to do when you are filled with The Holy Spirit.
OK; thanks for the clarification. It is located in northern Arizona and a yellow pages of there, under churches, will reveal that most of the are LDS churches. but, I understand what you mean. Perhaps it is near there that is is so and not in the middle of town itself.
My testimony part one I would love to share my testimony with you. I was raised in a good Catholic home with nine brothers and five sisters. Lol Attended private Catholic schools from first grade to twelfth . Went to mass six days a week . I was taught about my Savior Jesus Christ and the mysterious trinity. God as one physical being but three separate persons at the same time. Taught not to self study the Bible but to follow the counsel of our priests and nuns . I had a nice childhood in a loving family. I loved God and my family. I was taught the power of prayer and faith in Christ. At eighteen I began working at an oak furniture company. One of my friends and work mates was a youth pastor at a Baptist Church. We began to discuss our faiths for hours at a time. He had a big advantage. I was taught as a Catholic the Bible was the word of God but did not study it on my own. I began studying the New Testament, reading it over and over. I read when Mary called Jesus her Savior. The Bible proclaimed she has more children and Jesus brother was one of his followers. In Timothy I read the main requirement for a man to be a Bishop in the original Church was for him to be a good husband and father. Then later in Timothy I read in latter days there would be doctrines of devils; forbidding men to marry and to abstain from certain meats. The most troubling was when the Lord commanded us not to pray in vain repetition. To make a long story short ,I left the Catholic Church and began to attend a Baptist Church. I gave my life to the Lord and was "saved". I was baptized a few days later. I was hungry . Feasting on the words of Christ . Studying the entire Old Testament a couple of times and the New Testament several times. One Sunday our Pastor taught the doctrine of eternal security . We are saved by believing what Christ did alone and not by anything we do personally. Once "saved "we could not lose our salvation. There was nothing we could do or not do after this event where we could lose our eternal salvation. Ephesians 2 vs 8-9 was the primary scriptures shared. " for by grace are ye saved through faith, not of yourselves, it is the gift of God . Not of works, lest any man should boast. " hmmmmm I was puzzled. I asked after Church if he could meet with me. He agreed. I asked if the core Evangelical doctrine was we are saved by believing in what Christ did on the cross alone and not by anything we do? He said yes. I asked if we are saved by grace alone and not by what we do? He said yes. Hmmmmmm . I then asked, do we have to have faith to be saved ? He said yes, faith in Christ and His finished work on the cross. Hmmmmm. My next question was " is believing in Christ an action? " He said yes. Do you have to repent of your sins in order to be saved? He said yes. Do you have to accept Jesus as your Savior to be saved? He responded yes. Are these all things we must do in order to be saved? I thought you were not saved by anything you do and yet you are telling me there are indeed things I must do in order to be saved? I testified to him that faith in Christ is something you do. Christ grace is a gift which none of us can provide but faith is our part of the salvation equation and is in itself an action or something a person does. He proclaimed it is an action but not a work. I proclaimed tomato, tomoto! The core Evangelical doctrine is we are saved by grace through faith and not by anything we do? You don't even believe this yourself for you are saying there are indeed things we must do in order to be saved. We both know faith in Christ in itself is an action. The core doctrine of the Evangelical churches had fallen apart right before my eyes. I then asked him if the Bible was the inerrant word of God ? He said yes. I then showed him several scriptures in the Bible which testified you must be baptized by both water and the Spirit to be saved. I then showed him several scriptures which testified you must endure to the end to be saved. I showed him scripture after scripture which testified you must follow Christ and be a doer of the word and not just a hearer. I testified to him we are indeed saved by grace through faith but faith is an action. Our relationship with Christ has everything to do with our actions . A couple doesn't have a successful marriage by simply saying " I do " at the alter. Our relationship with Christ is the same. " if you love me, keep my commandments" . Christ does not save us in our sins , He saves us from our sins as we walk with Him in a covenant relationship . Christ did not die so horribly to become an instrument for sin. The doctrine of eternal security makes his sacrifice an instrument for sin when you proclaim your faith in Christ has nothing to do with anything we do. He was perplexed. I then said you do believe we are saved by what we do, you simply believe there are less things you have to do . We all know lots of people who are proclaiming Christians who live to the flesh and not to the Spirit. When confronted they simply say , " I was saved when I was six, nine , fourteen, twenty two, fifty , etc... I have nothing to worry about " the teaching of once saved always saved allows for this . Christ's atonement exploited. I then asked him if he thought God would hold him accountable for these souls? Won't they testify against you on judgement day when you stand in front of God? Our meeting ended.
You want to talk about Martin Harris? As if to write things off because he was not a "credible" witness in your opinion? What about JUDAS? Are you also going to criticize Christ for calling Judas as an Apostle? We need to stop conflating the truth or not with individuals. Truth stands on its OWN. The Book of Mormon stands on its own, those teachings in the Book of Mormon, the Content, is awesome and there is no parallel in the stories of real faith by real people.
These people seem really nice. I just wish certain harmfull beliefs would not play such a huge part in their lives. Not the belief in a god per say, but imagine being a homosexual in these families, or enjoying sex outside marriage, or not believing in Jesus. Its kindoff sad because it divides otherwise really nice people.
