SUPERGIRL and ISIS are super heroines inspired from a little known GOLDEN AGE super heroine MARY MARVEL. She was the sister of CAPTAIN MARVEL who was one of the most popular super heroes for the 1940s. She was created by SCIENCE FICTION writer OTTO BINDER.

Another lost mention: About a decade after the live-action Shazam! series had ended, The Marvel Family (Cap, Mary and Jr.) would take to animated form as one-half hour of a show called "The Kids' Super-Power Hour with Shazam!" The other half being an original concept of a high school where super heroes learn how to use their powers as heroes. I have very vivid memories of this because I'd watch this on NBC Saturday morning along with the Smurfs, both programs of which I archived onto audio tape.

They aired much closer together than that. The live-action series ran from 1974-1976 (with reruns continuing through 1977) and was re-aired in 1980; while the Kid Super Power Hour With Shazam ran from 1981-1982. The Hero High half of the show was actually going to be an Archie superhero show (based on his Pureheart the Powerful identity), and you can still see the characters if you squint. Rex Ruthless, in particular, looks almost exactly like Reggie, and Ms. Grimm is an even closer match for Ms. Grundy. Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, and Isis crossed over into Hero High in three episodes ("A Fistful of Knuckles", "Girl of his Dreams", and "Cover Twirl"), and the Hero High cast helped out Captain Marvel in the final episode ("Starmaster and the Solar Mirror") of the Shazam half. Isis was also part of the team on the very short-lived - only five episodes! - Freedom Force cartoon, along with Hercules from Space Sentinels (with a different voice actor) and three newcomers. The version in Hero High used the Freedom Force design.

Mary is in the same underrated boat with Cap and Freddy after Whiz Comics folded from DC’s lawsuit. Despite Marvel Comics first family in comics from the 60s Fantastic Four, the Marvels will always be the original first family in comics from the 1940s.

For my money, the Marvel Family are the true gems of the Golden Age. When they disappeared in1953 I was broken-hearted. In 1973, when they reappeared, it was as if my childhood had recommenced. By then, I was a professional musician and wrote a big band piece called "The Return of the Big Red Cheese" in honour of Cap's revival.

Very cool! Captain Marvel had disappeared into mystery and legend already by the time I started to be aware of comics in the mid-50's. My mother had kept one panel drawing from a Captain Marvel comic, which was the only way I'd even heard that such a character ever existed. She was fan and told me about the whole Marvel family when i was a little kid---this was the only comic she cared and knew about--she wasn't into sf or comics generally, but did find the Fawcett characters really charming and fun. I treasured that single clipped-out panel for years and tried to imagine what these comics were like and what that character could do and did---this was in the days long LONG before there was anything like comic book stores, or books about such things, and/or comic artist portfolios, easy-access to information/internet, and studies about the field. Binder was a real innovator and told epic, imaginative and wonderfully charming stories. He belongs up there with the "Lee's" and Kirby's of the comic world.

One of my first comics was SHAZAM! #1 when I was 5. Hooked immediately. Somehow our local library had Captain Marvel From The 40's to the 70s, along with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Really let me know the characters from the ground up. It was a tiny slice of heaven.

I'm so sad to know about Otto Binders misfortune. A very imaginative person. I also see why ancient alien theory is so creative. It was born out of the mind of a comic book creator, and a particularly imaginative one. I hope Mary Marvel gets some recognition in the Shazam sequel.

Otto and his brother Earl Binder wrote a story called I, Robot for the January 1939 issue of Amazing Stories which influenced Isaac Asimov and helped him create the Three Laws of Robotics. His influence goes way back.

I was introduced to comics in early 70's after having been indoctrinated with the Superman & Batman T.V. shows. When Captain Marvel appeared on Saturday morning, it made check out the history of this character. As a whole, Cap had more appeal than Superman..flashier costume. And the stories with the whole Marvel family were great. It's time to bring the whole Marvel family to the big screen with a few modern updates..

I always liked the good girl apple pie appeal of Mary Marvel. First time hearing that Judy Garland was the inspiration. I can imagine Miss Sweet Corn Dawn Wells wearing the Mary Marvel costume.

Excellent! Very well done and informative. I think Otto Binder deserves to have the same kind of recognition that Stan Lee had/has enjoyed for so many decades. The whole Marvel universe was truly inventive, and, to me (with the possible exception of Plastic Man) one of the most unique blends of adventure, whimsy, satire and pure imagination in comics history (and that's saying a lot)! I know that, among others, Harlan Ellison felt that Captain Marvel had reached the highest imaginative heights in the comic world. The idea of a "Bizzaro World" in Superman really is an extension of Binder's Marvel Family universe (as are several other Superman villains). Thanks for this presentation. (and, btw, I can't imagine that Mary Marvel has somehow become just a "footnote", and forgotten...Except to the public at large.)

I'm 78. Captain Marvel was my favorite childhood comic. And I adored Mary Marvel! And Captain Marvel, Jr too. I was 9 when the DC lawyers killed them off. I didn't know why, but my comic pals were GONE. Darn! Thank you for the trip!

Otto also helped usher in Silver Age by revamping DC superheroes. He and a brother, wrote collaborations under name Eando Binder, who wrote such classics as I,Robot )not to be confused with an Isaac Asimov story) which was adopted twice in Outer Limits.

Fantastic. Great touch with his signature at the end. This show is SO educational. You kno the tone of this show plays out like Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" or an m.night shamalam type of feeling. It's pretty great! Narrator's voice is a must tho, w/out his inflections shows over, imo

Thank-you once again for all your hard work creating these truly inspiring documentaries on my favourite characters and their creators. Your documentaries should be produced into a TV show for the History channel etc. The history of Otto Binders life truly needs to be known by all comic book fans and his daughter Mary's life will always be remembered in Mary Marvels character.

Fascinating background on the name, creation, and everything about Mary Marvel. You actually learn a lot about the history of the characters. Knew about DC killing the Marvels and Faucet Publications but the background - nothing. Thanks for doing this. Otto Binder had a tragic life by the end, very interesting to learn about him.

Otto Binder and most writers of the Golden and Silver Age are the most unsung of all the unsung heroes of those eras. But Binder in particular, has not been given enough credit for what was the best period of Superman's long history. The celebrated Silver Age Superman owes so much of it's mythology to Otto Binder. The fact that Mort Weisenger was the editor at that time is certainly a factor as he was known to reject the ideas of a writer, than bring the same idea to another writer and get the credit for it. Weisenger liked to have ALL the spotlight of Superman shine on him, kinda like Stan Lee for the Marvel universe.

It didn't always come thru in the stories because of editorial, but the writing talent in comics in the 40s and 50s was crazy. Manly Wade Wellman, Gardner Fox, Otto Binder, Edmond Hamilton, and Alfred Bester all wrote comics in that era (and beyond in some cases). These guys were pulp mainstays for years!

Mort Weisinger was one of those editors who believed comics were simply for kids. Jim Shooter had problems with him, later went to work for Marvel. Weisinger's editorial style sounded condescending to me.

At first I thought the photo of Joanna Cameron (who played Isis) was actually Catherine Zeta-Jones. Joanna passed away in October 2021, age 73. Her middle name was Kara, which, as all fans of Krypton know full well, is Supergirl's birth name.

Great video. Yes, Mary Marvel preceded Supergirl by least 15 years. But Otto Binder created both characters. DC had brought him over to help revamp Superman for the Silver Age, making him a bit more like Captain Marvel.

Yeah, hope it does someday. I also hope they stay true to the spirirt of the iriginal comics by being cheerful and upbeat, instead of the New52 relaunch where they pretty much turned Billy Batson into a snobby brat. :( But yeah, if a film ever comes around, or heck a tv show, I'll be watching. :)

Great video. Well researched and well presented, congrats..! Can I nitpick on one tiny point? I know this is pedantry, but... although Secrets of Isis was the first *English language* tv show to headline a superhero female, it wasn't the first superheroine tv show -- I assume that distinction probably goes to Andro Kamen, from the Japanese show, "Suki! Suki!! Majou Sensei!" -- loosely translated as "We Love You, We Love You, Witch Teacher!" The show started in 1971, although the heroine doesn't adopt a costumed alter ego to hide her powers until season two, in 1972. (And while we're on the topic: Helen Slater's Supergirl was far from the first superheroine movie: Darna alone had headlined roughly a dozen movies in the Philippines before Supergirl's mid-1980s debut.) Anyway, that very very minor niggle aside, thanks again for a superb video. Well done..!!

Mary Marvel was my favorite of the Marvel/Shazam family. I was first introduced to the character on the Kid Super Power hour with SHAZAM! Produced by Filmation who also produced the live action version before. I did collect past issues of Shazam from a mom and pop video store that also delt in comics as well as video. I so enjoyed reading those adventures of Mary Marvel and the rest of the Family.

The Eando Binder short story I, Robot, which so inspired Isaac Asimov, has also been replicated numerous times, especially by the Star Trek franchise, examples ST:TNG "the Measure of a Man" and ST:VOY "Author, Author" Otto Binder was truly a wellspring of creativity in the field of 20th Century fantastic fiction.

Hi Cherry, I'm not an expert on public domain, but from my understanding...parts of the character are in public domain. DC may have trademarked the name to stop people from creating their own new stories.

@@FizzFop1Yeah, you might have to keep her name off your cover. Other than that my understanding is you can build off the early comics that have fallen into public domain as long as you stear clear of anything DC did with the character after that point.

Mary Marvel was a pioneer in the comic book world…. Mr. Binder created both a new universe as well as a new family, which he would do again for Superman…. A very interesting video

Captain Marvel's flight was way ahead of its time. D.C. had to use a cartoon to show Superman's flying. Very sad. I rented the serial when it was available on VHS. Planned on buying a copy but never did. Wonder if it's available on DVD?

Interesting story about a neat character.,....you kinda dropped the football on Marc Swayze though,...he went on to draw at Charlton for some time until 1956 or so, prior to that he had also drawn the Flyin' Jenny newspaper strip after having taken that over from Russ KeatonTrue enough, Otto Binder was a major comic creator, but Marc Swayze was an awesome artist and studio mates with the likes of Mac Raboy and others.,....Thanks to both these two creators for the hard work!

FizzFop1 The three biggest comic RU-vidrs are probably NerdSync, Variant, and Comicstorian or even arguably ComicsDrake. I could easily see you right up there with them. This series is uniquely focused and differs from what each of those channels do. They may briefly touch on Golden Age but you own it, man. Got a sub from me!

There's an article on-line about the Binders--it's an interview with their next door neighbor who was the same age as Mary. He tells how great they were and how far they fell after Mary's death. It's a very sad story.

The Shazam! comic series in the 1970s was pretty good, but my favorite run, short as it is, was when the comic was cancelled and the characters were moved over to World's Finest. Written by E. Nelson Bridwell and drawn by Don Newton, it featured some pretty good stories with the Marvel Family and even other guests like Bulletman and Bulletgirl.

As a boy, I was a member of the Capt. Marvel Club. I also had a crush on Mary Marvel. I never knew the real story of the disappearance of the magazines, until now. I learned well after the fact that there had been a suit so I thought DC was THE villain. When they brought out "Shazam" my reaction was sort of "I'm not even going to check it out and reward them for basically stealing those characters.". My opinion has been modified by knowing the publisher went under for other reasons. Thank you.

Hi Craig! DC had their part in the demise of Fawcett--but that was one of many factors. If anything, I recommend you find DC's Shazam#1 from 1972. It has CC Beck artwork in it and a Otto Binder cameo.

You should also check out the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline and their massive tie-ins. Even though this came out 8 years before I was born, I still read the trade paperback. Now that DC has its own app( DC Universe. Seriously, you should check it out), you can still read the Shazam comics you missed from the 70's (hoping theyre in that app).

For all the Golden age covers I seen, I never had Judy pegged for a visual inspiration for Mary. So far, aside from her we have Fred MacMurray for Cap himself and Elvis being a CM Jr fan. Now I wanna fancast Ed Wynn as Dudley

Lou Schiemer of Filmation told me over lunch that the reason why Mary Marvel and Capt. Marvel, Jr. were not adapted for live action was because Filmation would have to pay DC for licensing the characters. This didn't prevent Filmation from adapting them in animated form in 1981.

Sometime in my childhood I got some comics of the Marvel family that showed the origins. I got them from a used bookstore, so who knows which era it was from (probably the 70's). What little of it that I read I did enjoy. I remember that the boy that was Captain Marvel Jr was a cripple normally (needed a crutch which would disappear upon transformation). Sadly, I don't remember much else and I sold them back to the used bookstore sometime later. I do remember that Mary Marvel was there, however. Thank for that trip down memory lane. It's been some time since I'd thought of those comic books. :-)

I have a letter from Otto that he typed himself because he had to white out his mistakes. I had written to DC in 1985 for help in researching my senior history paper on the golden age of comics. Otto sent me the reply. The original Legion of Super-Heroes is my favorite team.
