I provided the singing voice for Liv Ullmann in this movie….I sang The World is a Circle,Where Knowledge Ends (Faith Begins) and the duet I Might Frighten Her Away. We all had such high hopes for it and were devastated when it bombed so badly. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 17%! RIP Burt, you were great to work with.
Great song and vocal performances. It was one of my favorite 3 songs from the film. The other 2 were: "The things That I will Not Miss" and "Question Me An Answer."
Wow, thank you Diana for writing on this youtube page.Your voice and singing fits so well with all the songs you sang in the movie! Would love to hear more of you.All the best wishes.
Since I fell in love with this movie and music from the time it came out, I never understand how it didn't have universal appeal and everyone didn't realize how great it was, as I did.
I so agree. I saw this on tv many years ago. Was it ever in the theater as a motion picture or a made for tv thing? Whatever. I never forgot it. Anything Burt Bacharach puts his hands on gets my attention right away. I always loved the haunting story of the Lost Horizon since seeing the very old black and white movie on tv as a little girl.
My Favourite Movie and I am nearly 54 years of age with fond memories that span almost 5 decades. It has taken almost that long to receive the pearls of wisdom in the lyrics of the songs.
I haven't stopped singing this song since I watched the movie the other night. I loved Bobby Van. He reminded me of Donald O'Connor. I read on the internet that he never took dance lessons, yet he was a fantastic performer. The kids are so talented.
It's the music score by Burt Bacharach that makes this 1940's remake worthwhile, and song and dance man Bobby Van, even though this remake is 'mediore'. The classic movie musical gen're fom the 50's and 60's was basically dead by the 70's, so it was panned and dated at this point, and including Siscal and Eberts review. The chord changes here are genious, and including 'The world is a circle'. Robert at 67.
I'd take Shambala, but then Bacherach's in his own catagory, and his greatness is second to none, even though by early 70's standards movie musicals were pass'e. Robert at 66.
You hit it on the head. Musicals were considered dated by 73’. BB write a great score but it got ignored. I was so happy to be a part of the chiral group that sang this song and “World is a Circle” for the film and on tour. Sang it a million times …corny, maybe, but still musically solid. It’s Bacharach!!!!
What the heck with the critics from 1973 on panning this musical, including Siskel and Ebert. If the movie musical genre was outdated at this point, and was, screw 'm. I was 18 when this came out, and somewhat of a 'Rocker', BUT the Burt Bacherach compositions ALONE would make this movie passable and worthwhile material alone for the compositions. Watch 'The world is a circle' rehersals video with Bacherach orchestrating the young girls for the sound track, and are facinating, and the air of inocense for the young girls is attractive and pure. Nobody has those interesting half note chord changes that Bacherach has that he infuses in many if his tunes, the half note chord changes on the somewhat muted piano and somewhat clumsy work, and, are absolutely amazing and fit together, and original. Maybe Frederick Chopin comes close to this quality.
U ain't seen nothing yet... I was so jealous of them kids... I wish I was there. One of my favourite musicals.. I know all(yep, ALL the moves t this song).
. I was 6,when I first watched this. The critics r just jealous, cos there was no sex or violence and cos HOLLYWOOD didn't make it. They'd probably have Tom cruise, Kylie, Swift.. George Clooney.. all rubbish. I luv this film.. I was soo jealous of them kids.. I wanted t dance wid BOBBY. I KNOW ALL the moves... This film tugs my heart a thousand times.. Always will. One of my FAVOURITE films of all times. HUSSEY was beautiful. And I Fancied YORKE at the time.
we love this classic movie songs by Burt baccarach were superb , if you were feeling low this movie n it's great songs will make you feel happy and a lot better, so just enjoy this movie Liz n pat 2015 november
Anybody notice at 2:45 the boy to the right of Bobby Van nodding at/pushing against Bobby Van's shoulder gets a minor double take from him?..LOL!!..but the film/choreography keeps rolling right along, no harm, no fowl. Robert at 67.
This is an awesome song about the Socratic method of learning which the people of Kerrville TX need to see. I tried to get into a women's shelter in Kerrville for battered women and they said the entire time you are here you are here (2 years) you are not allowed to ask any questions. Then I was like whaaaattt? How is that even possible? Then they were like you can only learn if you stop asking questions...and I was like but... Socratic method of learning involves a lot of me asking questions and you answering in questions...then they're like noooo I studied my degree for 4 yrs so you cannot ask questions for two. Then I was like ok you crazy bye bye I think I'll just continue being homeless. And now I'm in a master's degree program where I get to ask questions and hear questions every day! :) Woot woot! I love questions! How about u?
In the U.S. Army I asked lots of questions. My sergeant told me that the Army does not like that. I kept asking questions. Jesus would frequently answer a question with another question.
Some of us only really learn when we are asking questions, because those are the issues and interests to us at the time. Only someone confident with what they know and don't know and OK to say so, are comfortable teaching Socraticly, in my experience.
You're not alone Alan. It took me years to figure out what the major flaw in the movie was. It's this: the first song in the film is a half hour or so in. People going to a Bacharach/David musical expect music, not 30 minutes of Apocalypse Now.
You can tell a lot about a person depending on whether he loves this stuff or thinks it is woefully cornball. I think the furious tap dancing at the very end (before he flies off the deck) is a highlight of this movie. Bobby Van was not a top-level star but he was good at what he did.
I don't know why but this song reminds me of a cassette album my mama use to play when I was a little girl. They were nersary songs sung by a man and children in the background.
Like Valley of the Dolls and other critically reviled films, Lost Horizon is so fantastically at odds with what we usually see that it has developed its own following. I can agree with the people who shudder at the thought of it and yet when I see Bobby Van's fantastic energy and graceful moves combined with a catchy Bacharach and David number I can't help but grin along. The movie that busted up Bacharach and David, financially fueled Larry Kramer's AIDS activism and sank a dozen careers (and inspired Pauline Kael to write one of her best negative reviews) is maybe more significant than the more acclaimed films of its time. It certainly has a special place in my heart.
Remember this from my childhood and loved it. Love the musical score and love Burt Bacharach as a composer anyway. There is an innocence and hope about this film and a lot of films /musicals of that era . Bobby Van a great dancer . Remember seeing him in various films , one where he has to jump his way through an entire musical piece.' Take me to Broadway ' ( I think ?)
Lost Horizon brings back great memories as a young kid in the 70's. One of the best musicals ever IMO. What I don't understand is why this movie went down in history as a 'flop'? I really, really loved this movie. Still do. thx for posting !
It went as a 'flop' cuz movie musicals was pass'e by the late 60's and 'square' by the younger hippie and post hippie generation of the early 70's and hollywood at this point. 'Easy rider', 'Woodstock', 'Vanishing point', 'Catch 22', 'Mash' (the movie), 'Dirty Harry', 'The last picture show', '2 lane blacktop' was hip and 'cool', movie musicals was not, and 'old' parents stuff..Robert at 66.
Don't care wat critics say. I LOOOVE this film. Especially BOBBY. THIS SONG... I've listened t it a 100times and it gets better. I know all the moves. I wanted t be there dancing with BOBBY.
it depends on certain situations can relate to questions to ask but very difficult to others including me. I can ask a Guuuuud stupid question just to interject why do man never leave well enough alone like it is ? or why do some people fight over things ain't worth fighting for. I colud believe that song two hundred percent on the board. your answer is can b wrong my question is clearly right. thanks Bobby van.
If this movie had come out ten tears earlier, it could have been a smash hit. By 1973, nobody was interested. I enjoyed this very much when I first saw it on television in the mid 70's. Its failure drove Burt Bacharach to withdraw for the remainder of the decade. A loss for everyone -
Its funny, I've never seen this movie before but I could have sworn that as a little girl I had cassette tape that had song like this. A guy siniging nursery songs and lesson songs with kids.
The aid of taps? The taps don’t aid anything other then the sound. All tapping without them means is that you have to loop in the tap sounds in post production
Absolutely dreadful but it could have worked with a great director. Good intentions possibly. Sad travesty in how they utilized such great talents as Finch, Gielgud, and Ullmann. These are NOT great Bacharach and David songs -' for that greatness you will need to look at their brilliant 60's and 70's pop catalogue with such songs as Alfie, A House is not a Home, I say a little Prayer and so forth.
I think "disastrous" didn't even cover it. I remember seeing this move when it came out -- it was simply awful. I don't think I have ever seen any other move where the soundtrack so totally didn't fit with the story.
