I found this movie last month and was shocked to hear how negatively people perceived it when it first came out. This movie, its songs, its corny-ness, it all came together to create an experience that I hadn't ever had from any other movie. Feelings of love and joy and of being a child again. I'm not going to say it's not a bit of an odd movie, but it has very powerful messages in it and I'm happy to hear there are others out there who also love this movie for what it is
I remember seeing this in the movie theater when it first came out and I loved it. The critics on the other hand bombed it. At one point it was on the top ten list of worst movies ever made. It is amazing how 5 decades later that the attitudes have changed.
I know that "Lost Horizon" was really a mess. But I have to admit, I fell in love with the music when I saw the movie as a child (I must have 8 or 9). And this number -- including their dancing through the library -- stuck with me all these years. I'm still fond of it.
I just rediscovered this today, and I remember having the same reaction. I'm glad that I wasn't at a point where I could see how appalling the whole combination turned out to be. The music is still delightful, even if it was delivered in a hot mess of a package.
Looking at this clip you would not realise that Olivia Hussey was pregnant during the filming, they did all her scenes very early during production so as to not make it difficult for her.
Me too Donna. I'm listening now in 2021, and Shangri La looks pretty good, eh? And I'm listening in order and haven't disliked any of the songs yet. They are catchy and singable! But then, I always did like Burt Bacharach!
You are not crazy. You just have a heart that has not been hardened by cynicism. A lovely movie that did not cater to people who like to think they are sophist-os.
Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye do a wonderful rendition of this song - it is here on RU-vid or can be found on the reissue of the "Diana & Marvin" cd that Motown released in 2001.
I love this musical!! The songs are catchy! I enjoyed it when it was shown on WGN 9 here in Chicago in 1982. That was the first time I saw it. Now, I have the DVD. I wish they would go ahead and put it on blu-ray.

This was a movie my mom shared. We loved this movie especially the musical numbers. I use to sing them to my mom. I was her clown and live musical performer. I’d inmate Kellerman’s awkward demeanor! My mom would die laughing. To watch this now I’m in tears and I have goosebumps. I miss my mom. I hope to sing to her when we are reunited in paradise & do my inventive soft shoe! On the list of the things that I will not miss is my mom not here singing with me. This is a beautiful film. It still resonates with how people are suffering and need to find a place of peace. We don’t realize but we can do it without violence & drugs. For starters, watch a corny musical and get up & dance & sing.
While Sound of Music had better songs, I enjoyed this movie in general more. I read recently that Julie Andrews loved the songs in Sound of Music, but she thought the story was too saccharin. Lost Horizon appealed to me more as a kid. I still smile watching scenes.
I first saw this when WGN 9 Chicago reran it around 1982. I remember I was a kid at the age of 9. I loved this number!! I thought the title was Different People Have Different Points of View, lol
FromthePointedHill - you must have been born after 1985. You are waaay too critical. Wait until people born 20 - 30 years after you criticize good movies (from your perspective). This was a much gentler time, and this movie brings back many happy memories for loads of people.
@@nn-ro1lv That quote makes sense because the steps Ginger Rogers executed were far more complex than here. There is nothing difficult about the choreography in this clip and adding or subtracting heels would make no difference - that was my point. Ginger, was a goddess.

Reviewers savaged this movie but it is far better than its reputation. I just saw it again a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. If this had come out in 1961, it might have been a smash hit. Critics love to hate things.
You have to remember that audiences had "Oliver!" and "Cabaret"--both Excellent films--- in the same period to compare it to as a Musical, and in that regard, this one was merely mediocre......at best.
Also, Sally's voice is unique and refreshing. No need to dub with Marni, who was EVERYWHERE... What's the point of having all films be dubbed by the same person? Art is beautiful in its differences.
It would likely bomb again......though a few people would go see it to laugh at how truly awful it is. And I'm a fan of the book, the original film, and Bacharach.....but this is just a mess, overloaded with Mediocrity in every way.
@@eldiran2 to be honest, I would rather watch this than both Mamma Mia films. I know it's a bit of a stretch to campare the two. But those films were way campier and more awful in my opinion. But then again, perhaps I'm biased considering that I grew up with this film (and this is coming from a millenial btw).
@@hazelchief-rabbit5903 I get that--the Mama Mia films are also badly done, but at least 'Lost Horizon' has a profound point. It was just such a wasted opportunity--but with that cast, and especially that director, it did not have a chance.
I may have been 5 when this came out so I don't recall. Since it flopped I guess networks were hesitant to show it. Thanks to RU-vid, I have discovered, watched and enjoyed these silly catchy songs. Good stuff. Of course the pervert in me wants these two to ... Nope. Not gonna say it. Quirky, good yet odd film with some nifty musical sequences. Thumbs up!

The songs are great in this film but there are not enough of them. It takes far too long for the songs and the play to get going, The play is missing something. It's not quite there.
Lost Horizon was a big disappointment. I went to the movies expecting to love the scenery in the mountains of Shangri-La and the best thing about this film were the songs. I still love them.
The dancing is so little of the message . In the message is much more than only cheesy entertainment of perfectionists. Sorry too many people are fallible human beings for the perfectionist others. My friends in Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet ,and southern sing well ,but do not dance any better than these two. Do you wish to discuss their qualities and lives ?
