Lost In Alaska: How I Survived After My Friend Disappeared With Our Boat | Fight To Survive | Retold
It's a life and death battle against the Alaskan wilderness. Surrounded by predators, facing an outdoorsman's worst-case scenario, stranded without shelter and with no way to reach help. The will to live and unwavering faith are his only survival weapons...
Fight to Survive tells the inspiring true stories of outdoorsmen who have faced down death in the wilderness and lived to tell their story. Adventurer, author and survivor Craig DeMartino kicks off the series with his own story.

First, I’m glad you fought your way back. Second, when ever I’m in the out back, I carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) on my person - repeat - on my person. The one that I carry is an ACR Res-Q-Link. There are others. It addresses the satellites worldwide. When activated, that’s the first thing it does. Then it sends out the grid coordinates of the Latitude and longitude. And a unique code identifying me uniquely. Now, NOAA knows that (1) I am in distress (imminent danger of loss of limb or life), and (2) exactly where I am. As rescuers are inbound to my location, my PLB is sending out a homing signal. I urge all outdoorsmen to carry a functioning PLB in a handy pocket or on a neck lanyard when on hikes, canoe trips, camping trips, etc etc. it’s only critical.

I worked a season in that area and I swam like 40 yards in that water in mid summer and it was absolutely freezing and not easy. I was in real good shape and an experienced scout swimmer in the marine corps only a couple years before. I’ve heard all kinds of stories of people going under very quickly in water up there especially in rivers if they had any boots or clothes on. I actually got lost on my own in a dense fog bank following the shoreline and wound up in the middle of the big Chanel by Ketchikan in rough water in a little flat bottom skiff. Crazy stuff

You can live a long time without food but only three days without water. Jehovah had his back all along. But God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. water around most of alaska is very cold all year because it's very deep and glacier fed. @@marknapier8426 This will keep you alive. First, you have to have enough wood to displace your body weight in order for the raft to float, second, you need to have some sort of material to tie the seperate pieces together. Third, you need to keep your body above the waterline when the water is just above freezing. Four, you need to have to have some way of steering the "raft" which is not aerodynamic like a normal boat. Five? Sailing is not a option. You need winds that blow into the direction you're headed. Six, the river has currents. One miss of the boat and you're washed out to sea, where the boat was seen after it broke loose. Seven, in Alaska, you're most likely to find wood, even windfall, damp and heavy. Eight, he had basically a pocket knife. They're not designed to saw through wood. You dont go anywhere in Alaska without being prepared. Go to the woods and build a giant fire and shelter. If your worried about animals, climb a tree or find a cave, or something. You have a rifle, and nobody goes hunting there without large caliber, so get food with it. Salt water is usually plentiful with muscles, and other edibles along the shoreline. There are also edible plants and grass is one of them. You are just sitting around waiting on rescue anyway, so make use of you time and take care of priorities first. Shelter, fire, water and then food in that order. After that, concentrate on signaling for help with fire, written signs in the sand, etc. while keeping up on the other priorities as needed. Try not to sweat and keep exercise to a minimal if possible That way you can conserve calories if you are low on food, and keep from getting hypothermia from being wet from sweat.

You notice the boat anchored and the kayak? Apparently not. They were there for day hunting, not camping. Their supplies would be in the boat, not dragged ashore to hunt in a area just several acres big. Also, the boat is anchored. Why? Because each boat has a berth depth. You can't just ride up on shore, hence the kayak. Drowning? People drown all the time. Experienced people. Water, ice cold, sends you into hypothermia shock within minutes, quicker if you're inadequately prepared for the submersion. You also have river currents.

Agreed. There are so many things that could have helped, and small enough to carry in pockets. And I can't help but wonder why wouldn't a person create something to make themselves more visible from the air? Like spelling SOS with tree limbs, or even a large X? LED flares are very lightweight and could be carried around as well. And was his gun loaded? Why didn't he shoot three times when the helicopter was around so they would hear it?

I'm not sure why this guy did not make a log raft and float to the boat. I also don't get what happened to the other guy he must have had a heart attack or something even if he did tip his little boat he could have swam to the big boat. There is so much that makes no sense. I was born and raised in Alaska, I know the beach and woods well and the time of year. All I'm saying better choices could have been made. From my perspective, this dude 100% relied on others to save him and just waited for it. This dude had a live line sitting in the water on that big boat. if bears are down there, there is a trail to the top. firewood was there, deer, food was there, mushroom berries, and there were options. The water is called but he could have made it to the boat on a large log, just ride it like a horse. Look all I'm saying is this dude did nothing but wait for help. I don't hear this and think wow what a job. This dude did not have to have no shelter he could have made some, food was there for sure, He just had to go find it. it's like he did nothing and hoped others would do all the work to save him. That is how I hear this story.
