The back story of this episode is by far more interesting than the episode itself,it was originally written as an entirely different story....one in which Willoughby was a telepathic purple Llama.....the Llama they used kept trying to bite Johnathan Harris,so he refused to continue....thus the insane rewrite. The Llama character was originally supposed to join the Robinson party for the fourth season... If you look at the closing credits you will notice that James Millhollin is listed as Willoughby the Llama.

I am a huge Lost In Space fan. So I am pretty confident in the truth about this episode and the llama situation. I have gotten this from books, fan sites, and other fans. Irwin was looking at saving money and was not happy with how Guy Williams and June Lockhart were behaving and their attitudes (hence why they were written out of several episodes), and Irwin was looking to write them out someway in season 4. He was probably using these episodes they were not in to gauge how the show played without them. Note there were several episodes earlier in season 3 that didn't have them in either or they just made cameo appearances so he knew about their unhappiness even before this point. Irwin wanted another character added full time to take their place, and he came up with a purple llama named Willoughby that only communicated telepathically with the Robot, (I was told originally he wanted a purple baby giraffe, but the giraffe was more expensive and then there is the long neck which would probably have caused trouble with the sets). What Irwin was smoking and HOW did he think this was a good idea, I have no clue! The llama proved difficult and hard to work with, holding up production, of course costing Irwin time and money, and it even tried to bite Johnathan Harris several times. Johnathan refused to work with it, so the llama idea was scrapped. James Millhollin was brought in with purple hair to play Willoughby. I never knew any of this as a kid, so I always wondered why in the closing credits, James is credited with "Willoughby the Llama"! Why didn't they take "llama" out? Marta Kristen was quoted to have said that she was told that she and Mark Goddard were to have more prominent roles in season 4. However before the cancellation it was supposedly reported that all the cast, including Guy and June, were signed up for a 4th season, (perhaps after the llama fiasco didn't work out and Irwin cooled down). This is not the worst episode of LIS, those go to some season 2, such as "The Questing Beast" and "Mutiny In Space". TV Guide even had this one listed as one of their 100 most memorable TV episodes of all time (notice it didn't say best, just memorable).

According to June Lockhart, there was someone off stage reading the lines of the suffering plants for the actors to react to, and then the lines were looped into the final cut of the episode. The actor reaction was essentially WTF?

LMAO "I abhor nature!" I did hear Jonathan Harris talk about when Peter Packer reluctantly gave him the script. I do cut Packer a little slack though, as I can't imagine the framework Irwin Allen gave him to work under. Allen had a habit of creating potentially brilliant shows, then destroying them with idiotic scripts. I can't help but see Allen's heavy hand in this.

Irwin Allen first imagined Willoughby as a talking llama. Judy and Penny's characters are flipped in this episode with Penny having nothing much to do. The "moisture dispenser" is the robotic points judge from "Hunter's Moon" repurposed. This is NOT the worst episode in the series because it is at least watchable. There are other episodes: hillbillies in season one, the questing beast and thor and brunhilde in season two - that are so bad, they're a chore to watch.
@Nathan-jq1uw
@Nathan-jq1uw 3 года назад
I agree. Rebellion is watchable like some of the other cheesy episodes. To me "The Questing Beast" is the worst. Really, even with all the clunkers no other comes close. I can't defend it like I've heard other fans do. The Space Croppers I don't mind. Space Vikings, not my fave, but I can handle it. A lot of people hate Mutiny In Space, but I think Questing Beast is in its own category of horrible.

I was just thinking the other day. The entire behind the scenes stuff that was Lost In Space would make for a great movie - not a documentary, but one with a cast in it - either on a pay channel like HBO or one of the streaming services. It just reads like a parody of making a television series that would be too unbelievable to be true. This episode on it's own would have plenty of material to work with. And if there was one casting decision I would make, it would be Jason Alexander as Irwin Allen. he just seems made for that role!

I still enjoy and appreciate the shows he created. They just had a habit of going off the rails after the first year or so!! He employed a bunch of TOTAL HACK writers!! (Probably at very low pay)!!! He got a reputation as being a cheapskate, reusing props and costumes all the time. In reality, the cheapness came from the very limited budgets the network gave him to work with. The network wanting to cut the budget more for a 4th season was a main reason he said “to hell with it”, and let it be cancelled!

An episode of Space: 1999 follows the basic theme of the plants' taking over a world. Check out "The Rules of Luton", season 2. I notice that the background music for this episode and "Junkyard in Space" was different from the music for the rest of the series. It was more mellow and not as bombastic or sappy as the older music.

I have a LIS book from 1990 at home which has production dates listed. The production and telecast dates of the episodes in Season 3 were all over the place. As someone said elsewhere, the next 2 were Fugitives in Space and Space Beauty, neither of which included Guy or June. As for my memory of this episode. ZERO!!!!! As I mentioned, Australia refused to telecast B&W episodes after 1975 when colour tv started. I suspect this arbitrary decision extended to not telecasting this diabolical episode. Either that, or I simply missed watching the show on the various telecast dates. I can vouch for the arbitrariness of the networks. I clearly remember one particular season thy brought back LIS, but instead of starting from episode 1 of Season 2, they started with the 4th episode, Forbidden World!!

There's an idea, that if an actor takes something completely serious, and acts like they believe it, the audience will, too. Most of this episode is an example of that. Even Jonathan Harris toned it down for once. The only scene where he really over-acted as usual was the "Keep moving, keep moving!" bit. I like that this is one of the few episodes where everybody got something to do, and this wound up as one of Judy's best stories! I'd have loved to see her & Will interact more as they did here. I loved how The Robot said, "Personally, I would rather leave him here." But then he gets fooled again. Naturally, Smith decides to do something "nice", but OF COURSE, has an ulterior motive for it. I can't believe Tybo built that hothouse and the equipment under it. It seems to me, Tybo almost HAS to be the result of some unknown alien scientific experiment, perhaps one that went wrong and the makers either abandoned it, or were turned into mulch by their creations. As with many of even the sillier stories (like, yes, "The Questing Beast" and "Space Vikings"), there's a serious moral for any kids watching this. Let people be who they are! DON'T spend all your time trying to change them. This is very important, nowadays. You know, it could be that Tybo was the result of some scientist changing a plant into what he is now... and as a result, he took that, and made it his own mission in life. (Once again, I find myself putting more thought in than the original writers.) I really love the Willoughby character in this. It may be the most laid-back, reasonable, likable character James Millhollin ever played. (He was such a rat on BATMAN, even his criminal client tried to kill him!) I had a thought, if this was DOCTOR WHO, where the regular cast changed on a regular basis, imagine if at the end of this one, Smith had been left behind as he kept saying he wanted to be... and Willoughby took HIS place! He would have been so much more intelligent and helpful. In production order, ""Fugitives In Space" and "Space Beauty" (my vote for THE WORST one) were next. But in my re-ordered viewing, there's only ONE left after this... "Junkyard In Space". Funny enough, I could imagine them offering the Junkman a lift to another planet once he evolved into a better person by the end. Perhaps a season 4 opener where he'd be along, then stay behind on whatever planet they landed on next.

As a big fan of the music in LIS, the soundtrack for this show dropped John Williams “classic” parts and new music scored by Alexander Courage, ( I know right? Not too impressive for the guy who did music for Star Trek)! Can’t blame him too much! Can you imagine being given this piece of garbage and told to write music for it?? Even “Johnny’s” most dramatic, exciting music could not polish up this turd!! I noticed they started dropping much of his music in season 3, probably because the thrilling music made the lame “action” on screen seem even MORE RIDICULOUS!!!
