I was a young awestruck kid in elementary school back in the 60s when Lost in Space and Star Trek was airing on TV and man was I really excited to always catch these shows. It was Lost in Space that really resonates with me because of the imagination it sparks up in most kids like me, and because of Will Robinson. He was like the kid version of ''McGuyver'' in that era, exemplifying admirable traits and intelligence that many kids would like to emulate. I used to hate Mr Smith's character as a child but in my revisiting this iconic show a decade back, I realised what a genuinely amazing actor he really was and all his improv lines and insults were simply hilarious and colorful. But before I forget, there is another element that absolutely piqued my interest on this show - John Williams and his music score. The same John Williams of Star Wars fame. As a kid I remember how mesmerized I was by the show's music particularly that one that often plays (like a leitmotif) when a somber and sad scene was on. Funny but I'd usually wait for it even though it doesn't play frequently. (If I remember correctly, the music would be played in every other episode). Man, i was such a fan of the music but it was only 2 decades ago when I found out it was penned by John Williams. Amazing. Thanks for letting us join you in revisiting this fantastic TV show that's been an icon of my childhood days. Hope to see more.
As someone who grew up in the 60s... loving this show as a kid... I can tell you that the quality of television screens in those days was such, that you would never notice most of these problems. Things were pretty fuzzy back then. And there was no rewind. No pause button. And you only got to watch an episode again months after it aired in reruns. It wasn't until VHS came out.... probably even DVD before a lot of these sort of things would be noticed. Cool seeing it all in HD though. I doubt the producers of the day ever imagined the likes of 4K Television.
Oh yes I know it well. Watching on our old black and white RCA TV, vacuum tubes and all! We would rarely ever notice all these things and as kids, we soaked it all up. 😁
Totally agree. I never noticed a single blooper as a kid or even years later. Although I actually considered "blip" as a blooper in all the scenes in which he appeared....😁

@U.B. Retro I totally agree! Some friends of mine from the B9 Robot Builders Club got to see advanced copies of the episodes and we were geeking out so bad about the incredible picture quality. We were marveling at seeing the makeup on their faces because of how crisp the picture was. They really did an excellent job cleaning everything up.
Oh wow! I loved "Lost In Space" as a kid! It was my favorite show besides "Mission Impossible" and "The Sixth Sense"! (I think that's what it was called.) Here's a little tidbit for ya: Mark Goddard used to always turn when having conversations with Dr. Smith. He used to cross his arms and turn all the time away from the camera as if to look behind him. Well, he did that when he started to laugh at Dr. Smith, Jonathan Harris, who was so comical, he would make Mark crack up all the time! Thanks for that delightful walk back in time to great television!
Just watched season 1 Bloopers and Oddities. I must agree that I have 💖 loved the Lost In Space Robot from when I first saw him. And always wished I had him as my friend. Bob May was adorable and he put a lot of that personality in the robot, even though he didn't get to voice him. ❤️🥰❤️ Enjoyed video! 😊
Bob May definitely didn't get the credit he deserved. It's not easy being in that robot. I've been inside of an exact replica at conventions for years and I'm often in there for hours. It's a lot of fun but very confining! 😁 Thank you and I'm happy that you enjoyed the video!
As a kid 11 years old I absolutely loved Lost in Space especially season 1. It was so spell binding and the cliff hangers at the end of each episode were great hooks. But much later I learnt to really get into the use of music and sound effects. John Williams and his music to cover situations and characters was so very well done. Few if any TV shows went to that level. The sound effects of the J2 engines powering up were also amazing. There were several people with amazing imaginations on that show. As to the oddities I did not not notice them as a kid. But noticed more as I got older but things had technical limits in the mid 60's. My main beef was always the scale of the J2 outside to inside. It was all over the place. From the outside views there was no way it could have been a double level plus ship. I say plus because a ship like that would have had an engineering level as well. We saw some of that level in a few episodes. Then there were storage areas for all the equipment. And finally the bay for space pod which somehow made it into the J2 in season 3. It came out the lower deck while the access door was on the upper deck. Star Trek never made the mistake of giving you an outside frame of reference for the ship. So it was always massive.
It really is strange that they paid no attention to the dimensions at all. After a while I think they just didn't think anyone would notice. I guess as kids we probably didn't. I was so fascinated with the hardware and robot I didn't notice much else. I agree, John Williams really did an excellent job with the music!
I wanted to be Will Robinson when I was a kid. I got my degree in Electronics, Got a job maintaining Main Frame computers, and finally built my own robot. "Zoe the Robot" has her own You-Tube videos. Zoe can converse, travel about indoors and out and she has lots of little blinking lights. She has sixty 18650 lithium ion cell which can provide power for several hours.
They used some of same music, creatures, and machines in Voyage to the bottom of the sea. Some of music also used in Land of the Giant and Don Matheson that played Mark on Land of the giants played IDAK Alpha 12 Android and another character that had a wife and son.
Wow, how awesome it would've been to be in this iconic show, playing an extra. My son bought me a fully functioning B-9 robot, the small version of it. I never used or tried it with batteries in it, so I know it'll work. It's still in it's original box. I also have the scaled down version of the J-2 and the legs retract for the landing gear. For all this show was at the time, it's still a modern miracle that they were able to create all of the different characters along with the creatures. Isn't it funny how the J-2 was always buried in dirt, when they crashed? What a real delight going down memory lane......... Thank you!

Thank you for this. I remember watching the show when I was a boy, and it truly was a classic. Jonathan Harris stole the show each and every time. He was supposed to be a cold, evil saboteur, but he just kind of ran with the role, and became a complete opposite in character. What memories.

@@voiskumbeaver3285 Yes, that was the great thing about the first season: the focus wasn't always on the "Evil Triumvirate" of Dr. Smith, Will, and the robot. It actually attempted to be a real science fiction show.
@@voiskumbeaver3285 Michael J. Pollard was the lonely alien in that episode. He would later be in the Miri episode of Star Trek. I think he may have been the only actor to appear in both series.

I used to watch Lost in Space every day on the USA network during my summer vacation. It was such a great show for kids! What boy wouldn't want to be Will Robinson? The show still makes me smile all these years later.
Job well done on this documentary. Some of things you mentioned I was aware of, others I wasn't. I'll go back and watch these later and enjoy them even more. There's one more little mistake I noticed in the episode where John took the space walk to fix the scanner. Notice when he goes into the airlock there's a reflection of somebody off to the side through the glass on the hatch. Thanks again, much fun to watch.
Thank you for bringing back some childhood memories of watching this show. It was one of the few sci-fi programs on at that time that I enjoyed. Even as a child one thing that bothered me was the size of the Jupiter 2. You see the outside of the spaceship with the Robinsons walking in and out of the front door so you can gauge a size perspective. Once inside, there is no way that could have that much space (no pun) for a flight deck, crew quarters deck, a hold for the chariot, the pod, and then a new third deck that appears in the last season. I guess Irwin borrowed a ex machina technique from Dr. Who. Its larger on the inside than on the outside.
that always bothered me. the chariot was the same size as the ship. how the hell did they lug it around the universe ? I loved the chariot tho. tank treads + full visibility.
Cool video! I was a big fan of Lost In Space when I was a kid. I wondered how I missed this video, then realized it’s brand new. Now I’m gonna have to wait to see the next one. I noticed also in a few places you can see straight lines along the surface where the matte background painting met the ground.

I remember that when an alien ship was getting ready to land or take off, it was this strange looking rocket that didn't look like any of the alien ships. That little bit of footage was used over and over again whenever a new alien ship was landing. Still, the series was excellent. IA was truly a pioneer and master at entertaining.
Great video! I do not mean this to contradict what you say, I just want to point out that I was watching on a small, maybe 13" BW TV then. Because of this most of these bloopers would have gone unnoticed IMHO. Still nice to see them now, thank you!
I think I saw Johnathin Harris on Sanford and Son as a traveling relics sales man. And I think he was on Jason of Star command. Johnathin has done some cool sci-fi films and maybe a western or 2. Cool season one bloopers. I may have noticed them, but the music on all seasons kept me mesmerized throughout the entire run. Now to "fizz me a Phosphate". Groovie baby!
Think yourself lucky you only had to wait until the '70's to see the reruns. We here in the UK had to wait nearly 25 years which seemed like an eternity. The consummate music score remained fresh in my memory for many years though until that too faded. When the 5 CD box-set was released decades later I was in seventh heaven for months!
Lost in Space was so entertaining as a child, what I remember most about it was the Doctor's insults and the robots catch phrase "Danger Will Robinson!, Danger!".
@@outsider238 I especially liked it when Smith referred to the robot as,"You bubble -headed booby!" It reminded me of when the British comedian, Tony Hancock, in the episode "The Lift", referred to a much decorated Air Marshal as ,"You beribboned buffoon".
WoW , get right into it ! A good show to talk about with friends at school the next day . I thought that when I bought the series on DVD ,that I'd finally get to see the ending ,as never did on TV , little did I know . But in a strange way ,the ending suit's the title .
Lost in Space was a great show for a youngster. I loved watching it every week. I think the first season was the best and most realistic, but sort of scary too. After a while it seemed to get dumbed down with silly episodes which were ok but not as interesting like the first season content. The show where they were all confined and judged for space crimes was excellent. Also, when they found a time warp back to earth was exciting... that was one of my favorites. Life was so carefree in the 60s. Thanks for posting.
Back in the sixties I was a young boy. I'm 68 now. Back then, I watched this show as if it was real. I thoroughly bought into this whole space adventure. One of the goals in Hollywood is to "suspend disbelief". That sure worked for me.
Just finished watching all three parts of the bloopers. YT recommended part 3 first, go figure. I only saw a very few of these when I was a kid and even more recently watching the dvd set I did catch a fraction of these. I can only imagine the time and effort you put in to this with freeze-frame and all. There was another blooper, one of the very few I caught will watch the recently and I was hoping to see it on this series. There's a scene where Smith is looking for something in one of the cabins, probably Will's, as he crouches down to look under a table the camera pans down following his face and you can see that the table he's looking under is just made of crappy particle board, no decent wood on the Jupiter II. I wish I could remember what episode that's from. It's a testament though, that the stories were sufficiently engrossing enough to draw the viewer's attention away from most of the show's shortcomings. I have to admit, I hated the end-of-show teasers ! As an aside, I am one of the many young boys who was totally in love with Angela Cartwright. She was and still beautiful.

We all remember the names Dr. Smith called the robot and how the words started with the same letter. I don't recall what episode this was, I only know Will, Dr. Smith, and the robot were fishing when Dr. Smith called the robot a mumbling mass of metal. I lost it for about 5 minutes lol. Great video and I have part 2 in watch later. Thumbs up.

Wow I'm 56 I been watching this show from the 70s in Puerto Rico and on Spanish lol, I was so in to the stories I could not see any defect and you are showing them all. Good thing I didn't see that in does moments I probably gotten traumatized kid lol
I met Mark Goddard at a comic con show and we talked about the shows bloopers including his own. There was one were he hit his head almost knocking himself out. I told him that I noticed another one when the Jupiter II landed on earth in 1957. The people shot at the robot leaving a dent near the neon lights. In the next scene the dent was gone.
I'm glad you had a great meeting with him! Mark was the nicest person I ever met from all the conventions I've ever been to. I spent an entire weekend with him. He told me great stories, we had lunch and he was completely fantastic the whole time.
I remember when the show premiered. I watched it every week. It broke my heart as a child to find out there was a man inside the Robot. I've never believed in anything since.
@@outsider238 I knew even as a kid there was a guy in the Robot so I used my Imagination and pretended a major corporation built a real robot for the show and it was more smarter and sentient than they ever expected.
@@frankreynolds445 Haha! By not giving Bob May credit for playing the Robot, it did add some mystery to him. I remember my brother, sister and I watching the credits to see who played him and it never said so we weren't ever sure if there was someone in him or not. 😄
The first season of "Lost in Space" had kind of a plot to it trying to survive on another planet, but then the seasons to follow got too absurd with the focus always around the dumbest character in the series "Dr Smith". Watching some of the re-runs now late at night, after the first season, The series turned into more of a kids entertainment hour shows rather than a serious adult SCIFI theme to lost in space on struggles to survive. Part of the problem was the success of the Batman TV show which was camp and less serious in its tone and therefore Lost In Space went down the same route.
I don't think the Dr Smith character was 'dumb' per se, he just appealed to a certain demographic. Jonathan Harris played Smith as if to the back row, lifting what was to be basically a cameo to the star of the show.
Really loved this show - Some of the sound effects were so creepy. I remember really hating Dr. Smith (well, his character anyway). I learned recently that he was quite assertive in rewriting scripts and insisting on "assisting" in the direction of many (most) of the episodes. Another thing I recall was that the acting really was top notch back then, in many of the other TV shows of that era as well. Just watch some of the early episodes of Star Trek - the actors really took their jobs seriously.
@Kelly Williamson I agree, you could tell that the actors of this generation were genuinely interested in "becoming the character" so there was a sense of realism that you never see today. The special effects might not have been as good back then, but the quality of acting was so good it more than made up for that, since it really drew you in, which just doesn't happen today most modern actors are just not that convincing the past thirty-40 plus years.
Speaking of Creepy, the Hollow Men of Doctor who look almost exactly like the weird 'faceless men' in Lost in Space, with the only real difference being the Hollow Men wore top-hats, and the Faceless men wore Bowlers. I always thought the two took place in the same universe (or multiverse), and the two villains were actually one-and-the-same. The shows share a lot - aired in the 60's, was a combination of creepy/scary aliens and humor, etc. Too bad we never got a crossover - I'd like to see the robot fighting Daleks or Cybermen!
Sound effects... There is an episode called 'The Astral Traveler' where this seaweed monster thing comes out of the water, and the sound effects of it shrieking or whatever it was STILL freaks me out at 55 years of age. It scared the crap out of me as a young kid. The episode wasn't cary, but the sound effect curdled my blood.
Very well done video. Thanks for your diligence here, you've crafted a very enjoyable way for us to spend 25 minutes! I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but there is what I would call a blooper in Welcome Stranger. It happens at the part where Smith is eavesdropping on John and Maureen during their discussion about asking Hapgood to take the kids with him. When Smith is done listening with his stethoscope at the little round porthole window he comes around and walks out through the hatch. When he does, if you look inside the Jupiter between Smith and the right (from our view) edge of the airlock you can see the bottom section of the robot, tread section and rubber legs, but apparently no top torso section. It's a very brief glimpse we get, about 3 or 4 seconds. I wonder if it has something to do with the subsequent scene when Bob May wearing the top part walks the robot into the ship through the hatch. On the Blu-ray you can catch this at about 0:17:41 to 0:17:44. I am sure you're pretty nimble with the pause button! Thanks again for putting this together for us.

@gcb ranger Yes, do look for it. Maybe most viewers who may have noticed it (I've never heard it mentioned by anyone but me) didn't think it was a big deal. But when you see it, it just seems weird that the robot's bottom half would be just standing inside the ship like that! If anyone other than me ever noticed it, I would be eager to hear from them.

Love these...thank you for taking the time to put them together! You might have missed a pretty glaring one in The Space Trader episode, which you discuss in this video. In the full episode, right after the Will and Dr. Smith stunt doubles emerge from behind the rock (which you point out at about 19:15 of this video), the moment the dogs attack you can see the head of a stagehand(?)...dog trainer(?) stick out from behind the stack of boxes on the right side (viewer's right side) of the spaceship, right behind where the dog takes off from. He looks out for a second or two and then quickly whips his head back out of sight. Check it out if you can...it's a great blooper. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
`In the Bewitched episode "Supercar", the same car was used in Bewitched and Batman Under the Hood of the Reactor The car is actually a prototype created by auto designer Gene Winfield. The Reactor featured a radar screen, flip-top roof, retractable fins, and a 425-horsepower engine. The hydraulic liquid-on-air suspension allowed the driver to adjust the ground clearance from 4 to 9 1/2 inches. The $20,000 price tag would buy several of Larry Tate's screaming yellow Stingrays in the 1960s. The lime green metallic paint with darker green shading around the edges made the car stand out as well. This custom car featured an aluminum body, so it's no wonder that Darrin was so particular about Sam driving it - one little fender bender and it would crumble like a soda can squeezed in a fist. Here's another bit of trivia you should know: at 10:30 minutes, that same big spider that was used in two shows, Gilligan's island and Lost in Space, was also the spider monster used in the movie 'The Angry Red Planet' from the '50s!!!!
In the episode, One Of Our Dogs Is Missing, in the final scene, when the monster is attacking, Will gets a laser pistol from the dog, but in the very next scene, he is sitting backed up against a rock without the laser pistol. Spotted that one years ago. One of my favorite shows growing up, have the dvd collection of season one.
10:45 I did not know the same spider was used in the episode of Gilligan's Island w/ the spider in the cave ! That frightened me so much because the show was a COMEDY and this giant scary spider was on the island !! And so now, Gilligan;'s Island was a science fiction show ? LOL.

For me, the Gemini 12 / Jupiter 2 and The Liberator (from Blake's 7) are the two purest and most beautiful spacecraft ever devised for science fiction. The saddest thing about the original L.I.S. is that the program never got the proper finale it so richly deserved. Cheers from the Land Down Under. Yes there were many great spaceships back in those days that are classic today. I was very sad when Jonathan Harris passed away. He was so good on and off camera. I thankfully got his autograph before he passed.
I totally agree. Back then, they didn't have CGI, so the creators of the show really had to use their imaginations. Remember the Spindrift from Land Of The Giants? Or the flying Sub from Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea? I loved those ships when I was a kid, and it never left me. When I was about 5 years old, my dad worked for Desilu Studios and my uncle worked for Paramount. I got to hold one of the laser pistols used in Lost In Space....I remember it being a little heavy, and I cried when I could not take it home! Memories!

In the episode where Dr Smith becomes a hippie the actor who plays Young Bartholomew was also in the Stephen King 1980 movie" the Shining" as the Radio operator Ranger who talks to the Torrance family via their two way radio .
Funny how they re-used props too. The giant alien ship that swallows the J2 in the second episode also appears in the Majesty Smith ep a little later in the season, on the alien ship. It is shown in its actual size (model sized) in the background, about the size of a cabinet or something.
Most people don't realize it was always the same planet. I know I didn't as a kid. They'd go into space, but always wind-up back in the same place (the planet was called Pliplanus, and it was supposedly WITHIN our own 'Sol' system!). Yup, the whole show took place near Earth - they never left our solar system, but as a kid I thought they were flying all over the galaxy. They were pretty-much the worst astronauts EVER. lol
If you are big on other 60s shows (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants, Batman, Invaders, Outer Limits, Star Trek, etc) please consider doing "error" videos on them as well.
The first season was arguably the best. The writer S. Bar David (who wrote a number of the best episodes of Have Gun Will Travel) wrote a number of the best episodes of that season.
One of my favorite childhood shows for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was a crush on Angela Cartwright who is close to me in age. The choice to make the robot roll instead of step introduced another conundrum of how he could navigate stairs. In any case, most entertainment requires at least a bit of willing suspension of disbelief so, even fun bloopers considered, it was a pretty good show through the first season. The campiness makes a lot of the later episodes a little tedious to rewatch but still have enjoyed revisiting the first season.
With NTSC broadcasting, the poor reception many of us had with indoor antennas, and the lack of any consumer recording equipment to playback the scene frame by frame, it was impossible for the average TV viewer to notice these things.
This is some great observation. Never forgot that epically ridiculous episode in which the Robot grew in size and Will & Smith traveled its interior. I mean who makes this stuff up😂 The Robinsons were animal cruel, whatever happened to Debbie? The poor dog?
