Lost In The Woods - A Canoeing Story in Canada's Remote Boreal Forest --- Rare Wolverine Sighting

I don’t know if I’ll ever have another trip quite like this one. Nearly having a moose swim into the side of my canoe, just minutes before having a wolverine run along the shore beside me! These are just a couple of the highlights from this incredible trip through Canada’s Boreal Forest in northern Ontario.
In the summer of 2023 I (Keenan) and my trusty travel companion Betty-Lou planned a trip through a seldom traveled park in northwestern Ontario. St Raphael provincial park only sees a handful of canoeists every year and there is very little information about this park. Although, I had high hopes that this would be an incredible canoe trip it completely exceeded my expectations!
Seeing eagles, moose, wolverine, bear and what felt like hundreds of loons, this trip was exceptional for wildlife. Catching a never-ending supply of Walleye just added to this incredible journey. Honestly, it’s hard to ask for anything more on a canoe trip and I feel very lucky I had the opportunity to explore and canoe through this amazing place.
I also want to give a big shout out to Brad and Leah @ExploreTheBackcountry (studio.ru-vid.com/show-UC... the work they put into their website and videos. I used their maps, which were incredibly useful. If you haven’t already, head on over to their channel and check out some of the incredible trips these guys tackle.

Simply wonderful video, 10/10. What a special route this is and I couldn't agree more about wanting to go back, especially after watching this. I thought woodland caribou would've been the pinnacle of wildlife sightings here but no. Still can't believe that and on that beautiful little unnamed lake (I think) to cap off your trip...wow. You got the royal treatment here man, and your captured it all magnificently

Thanks guys. It’s a special place. You’re right, I didn’t get the caribou swimming directly at me but the wolverine was a pretty incredible moment. It was on the little unnamed lake. Still can’t believe it.

@@CanoeTheNorth Caribou can be curious. My hubby , while in the northern bush, came across some caribou. They were a long way off but he could see heads turning towards him. He simply sat down on a bolder and took out his thermos of coffee. While he enjoyed the coffee he was watching some of the caribou slowly coming towards him...curious. They stopped about 20 ft. away, sniffed the air and watched him a while longer then took off running up the hill. Maybe your caribou simply wanted to check you out.

Buy an airplane ticket to Thunder Bay ontario,or Whitehorse, Yukon territory, or Ottawa ontario and rent a car .anywhere north of Barrie ontario is pretty wild country! Buy a GPS,with an emergency beacon, and a warm sleeping bag (20° f rated! Ground can be cold)and a rain tarp, and come on over, there's lots of room out in Timbuktu! There's Fort Frances to Kenora, with thousands of puddle lakes, bush, fish moose, dear elk? Caribou etc! And black bears! And have a fantastic time!

Yet another amazing production. The wolverine came out to thank you for all of the happiness your hard work has given us. The moose was awesome. Once, while canoeing the Bell River in the Yukon, I came around an island to see a cow moose that had just birthed her calf on the bank. Steam was still coming from the calf and the mother’s legs were still weak. They were so close I could have touched them with my paddle. I just froze and floated by them forever burning that memory in my mind. But I never saw a wolverine on a canoe trip. So cool. Thanks again.

What a wonderful experience seeing a rare Wolverine. One for the memory books. Every one of your trips has given you some kind of rare and incredible sighting, no wonder you want to go back out. That first sunset was outstanding. I for one appreciate your choice of dinners. Simple and easy to fix. Nothing complicated. As for the noodles what's wrong with that. You need your carbohydrates. Honestly is it any bodies business what you eat. I personally was going to ask you for the recipe. 😊 Thank you for wonderful video and more power to the noodle. This isn't a cooking show its a nature video. ❤❤❤❤

Well this comment just made my morning. Thank you!!! I’m never sure why people comment on eating that meal. I’m always happy just to have something quick, tasty and filling at the end of long day. Not a cooking show indeed!!!

Perfect timing for me. I was in need of some escape time. Such a wonderful place to escape toooooooooo! Now that's the kind of Walleye fishing from our trips in the early 60's. I remember making five casts and catch 4 fish consistently. Thank you for your time making these.

Amazing documentary and image quality. I loved your calm descriptive narration. The plot of your film was relaxing and flowed seamlessly. I really felt like I was there emotionally experiencing with my own senses all that only true wilderness provides. You my friend are an artist. Thank you for your gift.

Oh my. I would probably have fallen out of the canoe in shock of the swimming moose hahaha. The wolverine - now that is simply amazing and a vision that you will never forget. Such grand experiences for you, and patience is a virtue. Hopefully those beautiful wild spirits will be there the next time you go to this destination. Another beautiful and artful presentation of our wild Canadian North. Thank-you. 🙂

Truly remarkable video Keenan! I don’t know whether to start calling you the Loon Whisperer, Moose Whisperer or Wolverine Whisperer! Unbelievable landscapes and wildlife sightings. This video presentation is probably (in my opinion) one of best yet! They keep getting better and better and require me to set time aside to watch. Well done once again Keenan and thanks for sharing some amazing territory for us all to enjoy!

@@CanoeTheNorth yes, I do! I am kicking myself this morning. As I was photographing a male cardinal I heard a twig snap. I turned to to see a fisher cat less than 8 feet from me turn and disappear down the trail. Quite the experience but I completely missed any shot! I have never seen one in person before and thinking now initially it was too close for that lens to focus on. Who knows maybe I will get lucky and get a second chance!
