Moose Magic: Algonquin Canoe Trip with an Unforgettable Campsite Visitor!

For what seems like years now, Ive been trying (unsuccessfully) to plan a trip through the headwaters of the Nipissing river. Finally, as the summer of 2023 wrapped up, I was able to make this trip happen. This would be a short trip of just 4 days, but it was incredibly fun to head back to Algonquin Park for yet another canoe trip through this amazing place. Although it was a short trip, paddling the alder-choked Nipissing river certainly wasn’t easy. I had some great wildlife sightings that included numerous loons, ducks and even a fairly close encounter with some moose! Much to my delight!
Hope you guys enjoy this trip as much as I did! It’s been quite a while since we uploaded anything on RU-vid, but I promise we’ve got some really cool footage to put together this fall and winter, including trips from St Raphael, Woodland Caribou, Quetico, and Wabakimi provincial parks. Not forgetting a couple of rivers in the beautiful Yukon Territory! Being on the water for 2000 kilometres worth of paddling will hopefully provide some good films to look forward to. This might have been the best summer of paddling Ashley and I have ever had. Lots more to come and we truly appreciate everyones support and patience.

I rarely comment on videos. I think like many with a passion for this kinda thing we unfortunately fall into the trap of just consuming vanilla videos claiming to be more than they are,But you guys!!! Hi Keenan, i don't know if you'll see this, but you're platform is the reason i picked up a paddlers guide by Kevin Callan at my local library and that led to hours,days and weeks of planning and prepping for our first Algonquin trip last weekend, the story i have is absolutely insane and we definitely were not fully prepared but my 11 year old boy and my veteran husband persevered, my son loves watching your videos and they are truly gorgeous documentaries as mentioned above. We took our 80 lb Pelican all the way into Mckaskill without any prior knowledge and it was scarey as hell and we really were considering calling it quits after landing in Shrew at 9 pm and begging another camper to let us share the campsite with him (which he kindly obliged) next morning we finally made it to Mckaskill Cabin and on our way back at 8:30 pm back at Shall 17 .....our car broke down no hazard lights no working battery..... all in all, we arrived home safely two days later 😂 but man, will i never forget this and boy was i happy to see this new video up when i got home! We love you guys and hope you continue with more videos in the future! Please consider doing a restoule paddle in the near future! 🙏🏻 Much love from our family to yours!! 🚣‍♀️

I took my gf and the kids camping in the bush here in Quebec this summer. She’s from Europe and never heard a loon, plus she’s never really been in the bush before. Our first night we had a drink by the water after the kids were asleep. Still like glass night. An owl started to hoot. This triggered a loon, who triggered several others. At one point it got to be so much ruckus that a wolf joined in. We sat in the still and dark and just soaked it up. What a night. I hope the leaking tent and me getting so sick I thought I’d die when we were 14kms into the bush, and about 20km from cell phone service didn’t turn her off from next year.🙂

Loved the video and amazing story telling!! I did this loop right after ice out and the alders were already getting in the way and making travel hard. You're a trooper to do it when the water levels are low and alders fully grown in. I had the exact same thought as you where the start of the river wasn't so bad.. and then after that 200m portage.. I was worried I wouldn't make it to my camp site in time because progress slowed to a crawl... Didn't help that the alders snatched my map out of the boat and i was mapless for the rest of the trip😅

Thanks very much Diablo. Maybe this winter I'll do some shorter gear videos for people that are interested. There always seems to be people asking about the tarp. Thank you very much again for the nice comment.

Wow, good morning, great to see a new video, it's a good one. Maybe as the weather gets cold you'll get to edit a lot of the trips you took and we can enjoy them. Thank you, have a wonderful weekend, Terry

Always a treat viewing these masterpieces! At 57, I have renewed my interest in paddeling after watching many of these and others. Our canoe has been parked on the north shore of Lake Huron for several years with a couple uses a year. We are planning a trip on a Michigan river this coming summer with grown children that hardly remember the wonderful trips we took when they were kids. Any recomendations for the best dehydrated meals to buy online? Thanks Keenan!

Thank so much! We hope you guys have a great trip this summer. I’m not really sure what the best packaged meals are to be honest. We haven’t used them in quite a few years. From what I’ve seen though id probably try happy yak. Seems to get pretty good reviews. Thanks again.

Excellent video Keenan. We did the Nipissing River from Tim River access point to Cedar Lake one-way 1.5 years ago. The river gets more volume and easier as you move East as expected. The Brook Trout fishing was amazing, and there were several stunning waterfalls. Highly suggest it to anyone considering this route 😊

Would love to do the same trip you took and take some time to be able to get some fishing in. This trip was kind of a last minute rush. Did you get a shuttle or have a vehicle waiting at the other end? (Or did you loop back?). Thanks as always Derek. Hope you’ve had a great summer on the water.

@@CanoeTheNorthWe had a great summer, thanks. We drove up 2 vehicles - leaving 1 at Cedar and then driving back to Tim River to start the trip. Let me know if you want any info on campsites, fishing hot spots, etc. We went in mid to late May to optimize the Brookies. Looking forward to seeing the Yukon trips 😊

Right as I was preparing a loop which included the Nipissing you post this like it is fate. I have been looking for information on how the paddle is down it towards Cedar Lake. I may have to rethink my route... What were your thoughts of the Nipissing?
@CanoeTheNorth
@CanoeTheNorth 8 месяцев назад
Love it. I’ve paddled most of it. Ow through multiple trips and it’s a really enjoyable easy to paddle river. Good wildlife usually as well.
