Lost in Translation: The Son of Man Coming in the Clouds of Heaven is NOT Jesus! 

Jesus favorite way to refer to Himself is the Son of Man. And when He was on trial for the Crucifixion He tells them they will see Him coming on the clouds of heaven.

dear Mr Tabor, as Jesus said "You search the scriptures thinking you will find the truth but they speak of Me". He is the subject of all the Bible, the coming Glorious King who is to rule with a rod of iron. Worship Him, as ''every knee will bow and acknowledge Jesus as Lord".

I think the Bible has been tampered with. I dont think that God's way was meant to be so difficult for us to understand. Son of Man = Jesus Text says…”there before me was ONE”…not plural, singular, one person, not many. “HE approached the Ancient of Days”…not they but HE, as in an individual, not a group of people. “a Son of Man”…Jesus is referred to as “a Son of Man”…dozens of times this phrase is used to refer to Jesus. Jesus himself refers to him being the Son of Man. It is Jesus, not the Church, that receives “authority, glory and sovereign power;” It is Jesus, not the Church, that is to receive WORSHIP! The Church in the text are part of the people in the text giving worship, not receiving worship. Not even the Angel in Revelation 19:10 thought himself worthy of worship…why would the Church receive worship in place of Christ!? That’s absurd! The text keeps referring to a HIM, HIS…singular male…not a group of people, but a singular person, a male…Jesus the Messiah! “HIS dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and HIS kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” This was God’s promise to King David that the Messiah would someday be crowned in Jerusalem and the Messiah would have an everlasting kingdom! While the kingdom of the Antichrist will be given over to the People of God, it will be Christ who will reign, not the Church. It will be Christ we will need to obey, not the Church. It will be Christ who forever will be worshipped, definitely NOT THE CHURCH! You can’t brutally butcher a text to make it say something that it doesn’t say. And you can’t ignore what the rest of Scripture says about these events in other prophetic passages. To elevate the Church over Christ our King is heresy! This is a dangerous interpretation of Scripture not at all in line with the rest of the Bible and should not be taught or endorsed.

The Son is the representation of The Invisible Omnipresent Almighty God "When you've seen me you have seen The Father"

Thank God that Jesus didn't leave us in the hands of frail man to lead us into the truth. This is another perfect example why.

Daniel 2, may be talking about the saints of the Most High, but it includes the coming of the Messiah, our Lord. There is no coming of the Kingdom of God without the coming of our Lord. 1 and 2 Thessalonians depicts this coming. Jesus will take over the whole world and all its governments, take evil out of here and place righteousness in its place from that point on. There is a hiccup at the end of Millenium but Satan and all unrighteousness will disappear forever.

Hello James, if you read this, I have a question. for your book on Genesis what translation where you using. Every Hebrew text or bible I find they all use the language after the called redaction. i.e. translating Elohim to God. I would really love to find a original text prior to the redaction. Thank you.

This interpretation makes a great deal of sense given the fact that, in Genesis, man is clearly depicted as God's viceroy over the earth. A son of man being given the kingdom after judgment has forcibly taken it back from the hands of rebels is perfectly consistent with that imagery.

What's a "Kingdom" with a king? A group of people (They) can receive the kingdom by welcoming a king. But a group of people do not constitute a Kingdom. Only a King can established the existence of a kingdom.

🤯 I know we are collectively the temple of God and his spirit dwells in us, and i and the father are one as the father and son are one. But i never concieved the congregation as the unified field of "one" son of man, in thee ALL. This makes so much more sense and confirms what my spirit has been growning to recognize. Thank you.

Dr. Tabor, I would like to point out to you that in Luke 7, the Pharisees call Jesus a drunkard and a glutton and Jesus' response in to remind them that John the Baptist came eating no meat nor drinking any wine and you said he had a demon, but now the SON OF MAN comes to you eating and drinking and you call him a glutton and a drunkard (Luke 7:34). Jesus clearly believed himself to be the Son of Man. I understand that elsewhere it is not so clear, but, at least here, Jesus is referring to himself as the Son of Man.

You are taking them out of context.

It has been used out of context because of the translations and publishing of alternative Bibles. The capital S Son of man is Jesus. The small s son of man is a man born of the flesh.

This is indeed Jesus, but not at His 2nd coming, but at His ascension. He ascended to the right hand of the Father and was given dominion. He Himself says that at His ascension. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Good afternoon sir….. you are absolutely correct. The one coming on the clouds is Yahuah( Yahweh). And just as Paul revealed to us in 1 Corinthians 12:3’ “Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Yahusha accursed, and no one can say that Yahusha is Yahuah except by the Holy Spirit.” 😇 be blessed Yahuah(Yahweh) was never the Father. It was the Son the entire time in the OT. Who created everything?… the Son. Read scripture between God and Job. Thats wasnt the Father… that was the Son. Thus why Christ when He was manifest in flesh told us that “no one has heard the Father nor ever seen His form or image.” Remember Colossians 1:13-20.

When you read Revelation (from Jesus). Chapters 1 and 22, Jesus in the vision to John, given by the angel. It is clear that Jesus in His worlds quantifies, He(Jesus), will be returning in the clouds of heaven.. Jesus, speaks in the Gospels. Seeing yet not seeing. Hearing yet not hearing, and not understanding. John 14:1-3 Jesus, Son of God and son of man. Tells of His Return. If you read the New Testament in its entirety, you will get this in it's correct perspective. Taking a text here and there and dissecting the scriptures, creates incorrect assumptions and misinterpretation Shalom

I think we are looking so much at the clouds in heaven that we miss out on what is happening on Earth. There is plenty to do and plenty we can do ourselves now to improve our future.

First, what qualifications do you have to be an expert on biblical interpretation? Second, do any scholars who are recognized as experts agree with your claim? Finally, I ask these questions because Jesus actually applies this text from Daniel 7:14 to himself at his trial before the High Priest who recognizes that Jesus, by making this assertion, is pronouncing himself to be equal to YHWH and calls for a judgment of blasphemy against Jesus based on these very words. The elders agreed and remanded him over for a hearing with the full Sanhedrin the next morning before sending him to Pilate on the trumped up charge of insurrection.

Matthew 24: 3-30

I do agree with Dr Tabor that in its original context Daniel 7 refers to the people of God and not to a specific Messianic figure. However where I would disagree with Dr Tabor is that this idea that Jesus as the son of man in the synoptic Gospels is somehow a Christian innovation or a concept that may have been lost in translation. We can see in other Second Temple Jewish literature apart from Daniel that a son of man tradition existed, such as in the Enochic Book of Parables (ca. First century BCE - 1st century CE) and in 4th Ezra (late 1st- early 2nd century CE) that understood the son of man to be a Messianic end times figure. 1 Enoch (although in a rather befuddling way which contradicts itself by seeming to imply that the son of man is an eternal being and yet later is actually Enoch) conceives the son of man not only as being a symbol of the righteous as in Daniel 7 but also as a Messianic figure who was named before the creation of the world and hidden in the presence of God. He is portrayed as a being who possesses the qualities of the idealistic Davidic king described in Isaiah 11 and is clearly an exalted end times judge much like Melchizedek in the Melchizedek Scroll found at Qumran. It is this portrayal of the son of man which some scholars such as George Nickelsburg believe influenced the Synoptic tradition of the son of man as an eschatological judge. 4th Ezra also portrays the son of man as a Messianic figure who flies around in the air much like Superman and defeats the enemies of Israel. So while Daniel 7 portrays the one like a son of man as a symbol of the righteous, we should not ignore the fact that other son of man traditions existed in Second Temple Judaism which saw the one like a son of man as an individual Messianic eschatological figure that also served as a symbol of the righteous who vindicates the righteous and punishes the wicked, and it may be these traditions which influenced the early Christian conception of Jesus as the son of man figure. IIRC, Darrell Bock and some other scholars have argued that the Gospel of Matthew's portrayal of Jesus as the one like a son of man was heavily influenced by the Enochic material. Also as an interesting unrelated aside, I find that James' remarks to the Jewish leaders in the tradition Dr. Tabor cited to be very reminiscent of jesus' statement in the olivet discourse that when the disciples would see all of the signs mentioned that they would know that he or it was near, at the very gates. I also find it interesting that James's statement to the Jewish leaders seems to be a purposeful echo of James 5:9 where the author speaks of the judge (Jesus? God?) standing at the door while referring to the imminence of the parousia.

Brother, you are completely wrong about your understanding on Daniel. Absolutely none of what Daniel sees are literal things. The great Sea is not a body of water. The Sea is referred to as the Gentile World. You are teaching people completely wrong. It is not at all talking about the Mediterranean Sea.

Sorry but that is incorrect. You gave a good lesson however "Son of man returning in the clouds" is in reference to Christ. In the New Testament this same figure is mentioned and is directly referencing Christ in his ascension into the clouds and the disciples are told that in like manner will Christ come back . This "as the Son of man" is also referenced as the figure in the furnace that protects the three hebrews in Daniel. Son of Man whether "as" or not is in reference to "the Word " which is the Physical embodiment of the Father that interacts and intercedes for us.

Please don't confuse this content with the doctrines of the Christian Orthodoxy, as these ideas are more consistent with those of Jehovah's Witnesses or Islam.

Proof of A Pre trib Rapture. Pay Attention to the Cloud and Clouds Jesus appears In and With. Act's chapter 1 verses 9 10 11 Cloud. In Red Luke chapter 21 verses 27 and 28 Jesus is coming In A Cloud the Rapture. In Revelation chapter 1 verse 7 Jesus is coming With the Clouds when he comes back to the Mt of Olive the second coming KJV.

The striking thing is that whenever son of man is used in the Hebrew Bible its usualy to depict a weak human as opposed to a strong god. Like God saying "listen here puny human".

There is a reason Dr. Tabor is recognized by fellow academics as one of the world's leading experts on the Bible and the historical Jesus. I hold a degree in religion and though I do not always agree with his positions I always respect the scholarship his positions represent. In this case, I do agree with Dr. Tabor's position as the only logical explanation of the "son of man" given the texts presented.

There are three distinct characters in this vision: The Ancient of Days, the Most High and the one like a son of man. The Ancient of Days is a different character than the Most High, we can see it clearly in the Verse 22: "...until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom." Jesus is the one who will judge the mankind according to the Christian faith. Jesus called himself the Son of Man to underline his human nature, but he was also called the Son of God on different occasions and he stated about himself: "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58). He is also the Word of God from the beginning of John's Gospel ("In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"). In this context of him being the Judge and existing from the very beginnig of time it makes more sence to interpret Jesus in Daniel's vision as the Ancient of Days. In this case the Most High would stand for God, the Ancient of Days for Jesus and the one like a son of man for the saints.

The Lord when He was before the Caiaphas quoted Daniel 7, right there and then Caiaphas claimed blasphemy because he knew "Son of Man" is the title of the 2nd Person of the Triune God. By quoting Daniel 7, the Lord was practically saying He is that "Son of Man" in Daniel's vision. Matthew 26 64 Jesus *said to him, “You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his [f]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!”

Very good analysis. It wasn’t until I read the Hebrew Bible in its context and without a filter that I realized that Daniel 7 isn’t talking about a Messianic figure at all. It’s very clearly referring to the people of Israel as a corporate entity. A “human being” as opposed to the empires before that are ravenous beasts.

With all due respect to Mr. Tabor... The bible specified that it is the Lord Jesus Christ who will return (a.k.a. "The Day of the Lord") to end man's rule, judge the nations/people (Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 1:10-18), and become King of Israel and the world (Zechariah 14 :9). Note that He admitted to Pilate that He is "King of the Jews" (Matt. 27:11, 42; John 18:37) and Pilate himself believed it (John 19:19). There are so many verses supporting the return of Jesus the Messiah, but I'll just cite some. When Jesus was resurrected, just before His ascension, the disciples asked Him if He is going to restore the kingdom to Israel. Here, He was the one described as the "rider on the white horse" who is being followed by the armies of heaven (19:14). With justice He judges and makes war (19:11). Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down nations and He will rule them with an iron scepter (19:15; Psalm 2:9). He is called "Faithful and True" (19:11), His name is "Word of God" (19:13; John 1:1), and "King of Kings and Lord of Lords (19:16), and whom the beast and the kings of the earth will make war against (19:19) but will suffer defeat in a "no contest" fashion (19:20-21). Some people may not acknowledge the deity of Jesus Christ but His day that I mentioned above will come when every knee will bow to Him, those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will say that Jesus Christ is "Lord" to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10-11).

Daniel 7:13-14 has to be Jesus. “If the Jewish people do not merit redemption, the Messiah will come lowly upon a donkey. Daniel 7:15-21 We are given the explanation in the same chapter, how can a Christian read that and think they can explain it better? The 4 beasts are not literal animals but represent kingdoms and the one like a son of man is also a representation of a kingdom which is the saints of Israel as explained in Daniel 7:15-21

I was confused on this as well for a long time but it's very easy. Look for every scripture which talks about, "The Day of The Lord", I mean every single one from the Old Testament and place it on a word document. Afterwards get the portion of Matthew 24 where it talks about The Son of Man and PLEASE pay attention to the footnotes in that chapter especially. Also grab the portion of scripture with the explanation of the wheat and tares. In the end, you will concluded that The Son of Man figure being spoken of is The Father himself and not Yeshua.
