ROAD TRIP! Much like old Route 66, The Redwood Highway, US-101, was covered with Epic Roadside Attractions, old Auto Courts, Motels, Historic sites, Abandoned buildings, old filling stations, and so much more! California's Redwood highway travels through the far northern part of the state, North of San Francisco and up to the Oregon border. On this stretch, We start in Laytonville, California, move our way up through Leggett, and explore amazing old Stage Stops, Abandoned Resorts, Forgotten Auto Camps, and more! Everything from the Irvine Resort turned rest area, to the ghost roads, to the Chandelier tree's original neighbor! We see abandoned social halls, the shadows of Roadside history and abandoned roadside attractions, and finally see Giant old-growth redwood trees - Not just see but drive and WALK through three of them!
This is only one part of many Redwood Highway Adventures - each different! There are some amazing Roadside attractions, natural scenes, and historic then-and-now adventures ahead! While there are far less Redwood Highway travelers than Route 66 travelers, it contains much of the same kind of history and architecture, as well as having the added bonus of the world's tallest living thing, the California GIANT Redwoods. Although there are eco-tourists, crusty hippies, and family road trippers passing through, Hopefully these videos will encourage more "Route 66 style" Historic road travelers to take up the redwood highway challenge. The more visitors who ask these places about their history, leave tips and suggestions for old motels and businesses to embrace their history, etc etc, the more often these old highways preserve and restore that history. So please join me in traveling down the OLD Redwood Highway, in California!
Places visited;
Ghost Road 101
Irvine Lodge rest area
Laytonville - Old West Hotels and 1930s garages
The abandoned and repurposed Czech Lodge
The long lost Cummings Hotel Stage Stop
The Big Chief of Tan Oak
Ghost town of Cummings, CA
House of the Seven Gables in S. Leggett
Al Norlund's Garage, now a Seed store
The lost Hill Top Lodge
The Chandelier Tree & abandoned Underwood Park location
The famous Peg House!
Abandoned Elfin Glen resort & gift shop
The Lost and semi-abandoned Bell Glen office
The Abandoned Riverdale Resort & Lost Suspension Bridge
Lane's Redwood Flat - forgotten but not lost resort with Abandone

When I first moved to Humboldt County (late sping of 2001), I lived at the south end of the Avenue of the Giants in between Chimney Tree and Phillipsville in a redwood cabin which was part of a group of cabins built back in the 1930's as road side fishing cabins. They are right across the road from the Eel river, and there are large number of old growth (500 years and older) redwood trees all around them. I moved to Eureka a few years later.

I appreciate your showing the old Riverdale Resort. It still had guests in the late. 1950s early 1960s. Right across the highway was Carl's - no not "Carl's Jr." fast food - but a great place for home cooking named Carl's restaurant which featured daily specials like Ham Hocks and Lima Beans.

Thank you for the trip down memory lane. I lived in Leggett from 1973 to late 1977 and had lived at Bell Glen for a short while. I worked at Riverdale Resort up until my move to Nevada and had made plenty of trips across that swinging bridge. It had a motel until 1976 when it burned down and the main building was a convenience store, beer/wine bar and sold redwood burls tabletops and gas. It looks as though the people that took it over couldn't make a go of it because it looks as thought it's been closed for many, many years (42 years since I left).

I have really enjoyed your NorCal Redwood videos. As a child my grandparents lived in Phillipsville so we traveled these roads quite often. The building next to the now Elfin Glenn gift shop always had a mannequin woman in the top window. I remember always looking for her and what she was wearing. I need to go through my parents old photos. I know we have some from Hobbiton. I too was quite disappointed when I went back as an adult and it was no longer in operation. We still go back every summer to camp in Richardson's Grove. I highly recommend you go back and travel the Avenue of the Giants in its entirety. The one tree log house was in Phillipsville when I was a kid and first visited it. Thank you for these fun videos!

Very cool to see this video! I use to travel this highway as a kid every summer with my grandparents on our way to a championship horse shoe pitching tournament my grandfather played in every year in Rio dell, CA. That was 35-40 years ago. it has changed a lot in fact many of the old comparison shots you show are how it still was back in the 70s and early 80s,.. Thanks for the vid! I was on Hyy 101 back in the late 1980's. It was in the winter months, and there was snow on the ground. The road was called the "Avenue of the Giants". My goal was to make it to the Oregon Border, but I ran out of time. The road was awesome. And some of the names from the video are somewhat familiar. I took a road west to the Coast Hwy, where it was about 70 degrees Farenheit (no snow). Visited a number of towns back to SF. But one area I visited was called the Ecological Staircase. Somewhere around Fort Bragg. Extremely interesting. Dwarf trees, and different flora due to ancient ocean levels (global warming is a natural occurrence). One of my most memorable trips in No. California. Thanks for the memories. I have subscribed, and liked.
