Thanks for replying my friend. It's much appreciated! I've had very successful castings via castable resin, but it's just been recently that I've been experiencing this issue. But where Ive had success is when I've made the patterns hollow and thin and vented all the way through the sprue. This seems to releave the expansion pressure. But lately?? Man! Its been brutal. Failure after failure... Anyhow thanks again for replying. I really appreciate it. James Ruther.

I love the content. I particularly love that you reinforce the respirator use. Thanks for that. I know it's a post-production headache, but I actually like when the action is filmed and the dialogue is post narrated. It can also allow for pausing the action at key times and giving a more detailed explanation that runtime demos may lack. And, it allows full respirator use ;) (which, you clearly already know about given the editing).

As an automotive repair tech, retired into my early 60's, I was curious out the casting of products I worked with everyday at work for decades. I really enjoy your talent because it takes a certain person. I held 2 day classes but 4 hr tech seminars on 30 subjects in 7 states and many cities. So the message is always first, public speaking is a talent you have, don't or can develop if you know your subject. You have the skills of animation to show what you are doing in theory and in practice. You have achieved this level. Congrats plus I learned something. I would only guess after one video, that "Stucco" is a term that covers many items in the world of fine granules of a sand like product. As sand is sold in sandblasting but also the aggregate used that when mixed with a concrete, it used over wire on the outside of homes & buildings. Question; I will play back with paper & pen, but you included a mix of (Linseed and a solvent) I think, but aids in sticking to trouble spots on a casting. I find the process fractionating! I've only seen on tv. Like parts made from foam like cylinder heads, as you can see little half bubbles in the surface. The 4X4 trans case is sand cast aluminum as you can see the grain & parting line. I don't know why, if surrounded by machines as the oldest on a family farm, or the years of looking at something you have to take apart, you have never seen before, but once cleaned, you have to decide a logical place to start, based upon the symptoms. It is rewarding to avoid the most common mistake other techs make, diagnosing the symptom and not the root cause. I just like learning as I am restoring a 67 C10 pickup, but putting a fuel injected engine in it, with O.D. auto for myself. Casting some small decorative parts (Not Structural) is something I like to toss around in my brain as I can build, shape, sand and polish just about anything. If cheaper than you can buy or no one makes it, it gives you more pride. Not to show off but to be inventive. I subscribed and now have more videos to watch, learn and enjoy! Thanks!!! DK, Omaha. ASE Master Tech since 78.

Welcome to my channel. You right, sand is used in many applications across industries and some of the terminology is the same and differant so it can be confusing. It this situation the term stucco refers to the (sand) fine grains of silica that is applied to the coating of wet slurry after each "Dip" to add thickness and structure to that layer. As for the solution that can help the slurry to stick to the wax, it is de-natured alcohol and shellac. Linseed oil would stay wet or gumy. Ceramic shell is certainly used in some car manufacturing, but most engine parts are sand cast. A common way to form the patterns is cast polystyrene (white bead like form).
@deankay4434
@deankay4434 Год назад
@@LunarburnStudio >Thanks for the reply. The terminology is confusing but it makes sense. I spent a day in a GM hydrogen fuel cell lab with Hues Aircraft engines hired to take 180Vdc, change it to 3-phase A/C, 48Vdc & 12.8Vdc. It was fascinating as we took turns driving. I had a brain fart with flaxseed oil instead of shellac that comes from a bug. Even Red dye #2 food grade comes from a bug. I really enjoyed the information and I appreciate the extra work behind the RU-vid camera which you do everything, edit, sound, music, lighting and software. Then you sit and watch it 3 or 4 times before sending. This appears I would take some investment even to produce 6-8 parts at home for a DIYer who wants to make a few parts. These techniques go back decades as the automotive world produced solid trim parts for inside & out. The radiator cap was extremely ornate and then an alcohol thermometer was inserted to read temps, speedometers were an accessory. Hate to ask, but say you produced a polished aluminum part, do you coat it to protect the shine, of leave it bare and polish as needed? Best of luck in 2023, I will be watching with an open mind & curiosity. My youngest of two can draw on paper but has no ambition to focus. Thanks. DK.

Great video my friend. Had a question about inclusion marks. I'm seeing what resembles flat bubbles on the castings. What I is, think of a drop of water on a piece of glass looking through from what would be the underside seeing the flat area where the drip of water lying on the surface of the glass. Weirdest thing... Also, I print with castable 3d resin and hollow to stop expansion and my ceramic shells are still cracking eclven though the patterns are completely vented through the sprue. It's making me nuts! Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 11 месяцев назад
I am not sure about the inclusion marks as you describe them. maybe some dirt or oils on you wax pattern. Maybe degrease you patterns first? As for the castable resin, I have been struggling with that as well. Casting it in standard investment in a steel sleeve is enough to contain the expansion. I however Have not been able to get a successful burnout in ceramic shell, which is a major bummer.

Thank you for your very informative videos How do you know when it's time to apply the next coating? Should the next layer be created at a specific time?
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 2 года назад
It will depend on the humidity level of your room. and if you have a core (inner space) that is going to have less air flow. If all surfaces of my shell have air moving across it and my humidity in the room is around 60-65 % my first few layers are 2-3 hrs, the course coats take 3-5. If you have a color indicator in your slurry it can help tell you when you shells are ready.

First, I want to say how helpful all your videos have been! I'm learning SO much. Second, I was hoping you could give a little more info about the stuccos you use and where you buy them. Do you get them from Remet as well? If so, do I simply inquire about "50/100 and 30/50 refractory sand"?
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 3 года назад
There are a few different types of silica used in ceramic shell. The type I prefer is "Fused Silica". So when ordering ask for fused silica sand or stucco 50/100, 30/50.

Doesn't the skull also have some areas that have sharp edges (the eyes, nose areas) that make it tricky when pouring the metal in?
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio Год назад
You are correct, when you have sharp edges or deep details you have to consider how you are going to spru the pattern/wax so that the metal when poured doesn't rip across those areas but smoothly flow in maintaining those detail. If the metal flows in to violently it will tear up and drag that broken silica within the metal, making post work chasing more difficult.

I've only ever casted jewelry with the traditional casting investment plaster method (honestly so much simpler and yields nice results....) but clearly this has to be superior method, right?
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 2 года назад
Depends on a combination of the metal you are working with and the scale. If you do mostly small scale in gold and silver then stay with the traditional investment. The ceramic shell can be tough to get off the softer metals with out damage/. What metal(s) do you cast mostly?

Thank you for your good program. Is it possible to use another material that is cheaper instead of zirconium in the second and third layers? English. I'm not very good.
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 3 года назад
even though I mentioned zircon for my use, there are other options. Depending on the base component (fused silica or alumina) of your slurry, you can use the sand version of those materials for you stucco.
@eccentrickiwicreative2962

Have you ever tried fused Alumina for the first coat instead of Zircon? It seems much cheaper and appears that it is also used in industry too Imersys have an application note on it
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 2 года назад
Alumina works in ceramic shell but is less durable than Fused Silica and zircon.

You said you like to hang your molds instead of putting them in sand so you can see the leak and plug it. What do you use to plug/stop a leak? Thanks!
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 3 года назад
It somewhat depends on the type of leak. Is it a dribble or a gusher? For small pinholes or streams sometime i can use a steel rod that is cold on one end or a rod that is wrapped with some fabric that is damp, placing it over the leak can freeze the metal to form a plug. For larger leaks I like to use a refractory paste like green-patch, applied with a spatula with a longer handle.

To dry the first layer without creating new problems wouldn't it make sense to use a dry silica similar to the slurry?
@LunarburnStudio
@LunarburnStudio 6 месяцев назад
Im not sure I understand the question. The best way to dry each coat is air movement. (I use several fans) I also have a de-humidifier in the room which also helps.
@sumguysr

@@LunarburnStudioYou do a slurry only first coat but sometimes it cracks and peels during drying. I'm suggesting trying very fine dry silica gel or colloidal silica powder on top of the first slurry layer to reinforce it without loosing detail.
