Lost With All Hands on Lake Superior the Adella Shores

When a vessel vanishes on Lake Superior it is felt that the vast expanse of the lake and the depth of her water will forever hold the secret to the disaster. Sometimes the news reports of the day mislead us in searching for a lost vessel. Yet occasionally the mute evidence left on the surface can tell us the truth. In the 1909 loss of the wooden steamer Adella Shores her secret was held by Lake Superior for more than a century. But in 2021she was found. This is her story.

Just shaking my head at how cold and scary that must have been. And I grew up in the Soo in the 1970s. I know cold. Oof. Let’s all raise a glass to these guys tonight. They deserve it. Wes, thanks for remembering them.

It's good to hear your voice and listen to your story again! I know you said you would be busy traveling this summer, so I've been waiting patiently for a new story. As usual, it is well told, bring to life a past that very few are aware of.

Great video as always wes! As boatnerds know a tragedy is upon us. The vessel S.T. Crapo will be scrapped in port colborne. One of my favorite vessels, this is sad. Being the boatnerd I am, I got several photos while in green Bay.

Ignorant, arrogant Captain's setting out into storms is a well recorded death knell for vessels throughout history. I thought the model was excellent and particularly the tiny oar and jacket. It makes you think about the poor man that clung to it as he slowly succumbed to hypothermia in that freezing cold water. Sadly, he would have known that he couldn't stay alive in those conditions...

Gotta chase the dollars. The sooner you get moving the sooner the money rolls in. And the captain was now a part owner so he was going to push the limits .

What a coincidence that two ships would have a shared history and both would eventually wreck. As much as I know about the Daniel J Morrell I never knew she crossed paths with Adella Shores.

Great vid Wes! Well worth the wait. Am I correctly seeing the shadow of the other mast in those images of the wreck? Also kind of ironic the point of a clue to a single survival of the wreck before succumbing, only to be almost repeated by the Morrell herself.

Yes you probably are seeing a shadow. A good explanation of side scan sonar is to watch. Adventures with Purpose here on you tube, they use a lot of side scan when looking for vehicles under water

Wes, I’ve got a couple of questions. 1. How often do crewmembers get off the ships during the season? I’m under the impression that they never get off the boat all season because they never stop anywhere longer than necessary. 2. Do boats keep cats or dogs as pets/ mascots?
@authorwes
@authorwes Год назад
Union contracts now give crews "vacation" after a certain amount of weeks aboard ship. As early as the 1960s when you signed aboard, you were on for the whole season, however, some crew transferred from one boat to another and college students could sign aboard as a summer job.
@bigmonmagoomba9634
@bigmonmagoomba9634 Год назад
@@authorwes I did find an article in a Duluth paper talking about some crew going "up the street" for a few hours when they weren't on duty and the boat was getting loaded.
@johnneff8013
@johnneff8013 6 месяцев назад
It took a long time to load the boats. If they were in port loading and unloading, they might sleep ashore, leaving one crew member to keep watch. @@bigmonmagoomba9634
