A character like Aragorn here is so rare to see anymore. Viggo played him to perfection. He’s brave and strong yet gentle and caring, noble and kingly yet very humble, fierce to the enemies, loving to his kins and friends, very wise yet he never condescends others. A King, a warrior, a dear friend and companion. And he played it without being cringy, not a bit. It’s such a perfect character.
@tom-vf1xv

Especially amazing considering he was a secondary casting after the original Aragorn casting did so poorly (Stuart Townsend) and seemingly didnt care at all so after already having filmed various scenes Peter Jackson made the decision to have him replaced.

That is some amazing acting from Hugo Weaving. How he manages to smile and clap while conveying the deep sadness in Elrond's eyes, simultaneously sad that his daughter will become mortal and die, and happy that she is with the man she loves, and will live a shorter life of more intense joy. A masterclass in bittersweet.
@johnstajduhar9617

Not even just joy... more, she'll be fulfilled and satisfied, even with her sadness at the very end, when she goes to die alone in the desolate hollows where Lothlorien once stood. That as painful as this parting is, Elrond's wise enough to know it would be more painful to see her waste away slowly and lifelessly in the Undying Lands with him, and that his greatest act of love is to let her go. AND HE DOES THAT ALL WITH A FEW SECONDS OF BACKGROUND ACTING! Hugo Weaving's so good.

There's a line in the book where Eomer tells Aragorn that he will fight with him wherever he chooses (something like that, it's before they storm the Black Gate). This small interaction in the movie pays homage to that, showing their mutual respect for each other. Eomer is one of those characters that gets a bit shafted due the constraints of the film, but he still gets treated with great dignity

King Elessar lived to 210. He reigned for 122 years as King. His reign was prosperous for all the people of his kingdom. They rebuilt and reclaimed much of the territory of Gondor and Arnor, and saw the reestablishment of the cooperation of Men, Dwarves, and Elves. He was buried next to Pippin and Merry who had died 58 years earlier. He was succeeded by his son, Eldarion. Arwen, heartbroken by his death, passed away soon after in Lothlorien. This is from the wiki, I just thought I'd save everyone a search on the fate of Aragorn and his reign as king.

Look at Elrond's face, what a great actor Hugo Weaving is. He read the books... He knows Arwen is realizing her dream of being married to Aragorn, but he knows also that he is losing her, forever, bc the Elves go to Valinor and the mortals go "Beyond the Circles of this World", which may be Tolkien's way of saying the Biblical afterlife, ie, heaven or hell. And Arwen becomes mortal when she loses her husband to old age: Remember the Elves are immortal, but there are two ways they can die, they can be killed, and they will die of broken hearts and grief, and one way of heartbreak is unrequited love, or grief for separation from a beloved... So Poor Elrond had 2 choices: To watch his daughter waste away in grief if she went with him to Valinor, or to know that she would die of grief once Aragorn finally passed away, despite him being a Dunadan and living 3 times as long a normal Man. (210 years, 122 of which was as King of the West. There was a scene in "The two towers" where this is explained... Great acting by Hugo Weaving, and Liv Tyler both..Arwen is 3000 years old and she knows her time is will end, but she faces it bravely, and Elrond who is more than 6500 years old, (born first age in a settlement at the mouth of the river Sirion, near the west shores of Beleriand... which was sunk and lost forever in the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age.. and among the survivors of Gondolin, and Doriath, when the final kinslaying took place and the settlement was destroyed, and Elrond and his brother Elros were taken and fostered by Maedros son of Feanor... and Elrond went on to survive not only the First Age, of which only 50 or so years remained, but also the 3,434 years of the Second age and the 3,021 years of the Third Age before he took ship into the West forever... and Galadriel went with him, leaving Celeborn as "the last living memory of the Elder Days (the First Age) in Middle Earth" ..

Lovely scene. One of my favorite moments was when Arwen saw Aragorn for the first time in a while and she was a bit shy about going to him and Elrond had to urge her on. You don't hear him say it, but his lips clearly say "go to him." and she does. The moment where Aragorn says "my friends. You bow to no one." is also very well done.

Well, after 39 years of having to limit himself to holding her (almost) at arm's length when kissing her and having just suffered all those months of fear and doubt (especially in the movies), I am glad that he allowed his heart to rule his head in that moment! Did you ever notice that he mouths "I love you" just after the second kiss? I find that so beautiful, especially since he is saying it while his eyes are brimming with adoration and wonder at having her there in his arms and the way in which he caresses her face speaks volumes

It's amazing what they did to Aragorn's appearance with must minor changes. Up until nearly the end, he looked like someone who lived outdoors - stringy, oily hair & a patchy beard. He looked a little better at the Battle of the Black Gate, with his hair pulled back and beard cleaned up some. Here, though, at his coronation, he has a plump, full beard & clean, shoulder-length combed-out hair that looks both noble and kingly. Props to whatever stylists did the work on that - the changes are subtle but the overall effect is anything but.

Now this to me is an exceptionally powerful line especially knowing that among Elendil's descendants, Aragorn was the one who was most like him. Not only is this a fantastic moment for Aragorn and the rest of them there, but also to Gandalf. His entire time on Middle-Earth was to fight to get to this very moment, over thousands of years and across thousands of miles. He gave himself to see this moment brought to fruition.

@zeeboss7553 yes. It's worth noting that in the books, The fellowship travelled together for several months. And after their disbanding, the trio fought together till the very end, and that duration lasted for another 6 months ish , [I think] So being with an ally who were there willing to put their lives in front of the line to protect you, could only result in such a strong bond that Legolas and Aragorn [and Gimli] had developed. I really love this Trilogy, It taught [still teaches] me a lot of life lessons, Be it about overcoming your greatest weakness, to lessons about true friendship, to letting go of the things that must be let go. LOTR - greatest fantasy movie of all time. :)

I think part of what makes the line "My friends, you bow to no one!" so powerful is the amount of sincere emotion Aragorn says it with. He knew better than most what the four of them had endured, willingly. Their sacrifice, bravery and strength of spirit were unmatched by anyone else that was a part of the war of the ring, and Aragorn knew it. Viggo delivered it perfectly, as he did every little thing as Aragorn in the entire trilogy.

Seriously, as far as the movie scripts go, as i have forgotten practically most of the book, all 4 of the hobbits played pivotal roles in turning the tides in the favor of men. 1. Frodo carried the ring. 2. Sam made it possible for Frodo to carry the ring. 3. Pippin's curiosity in delving into the black stones exposed Sauron's plans to Gandalf, which compelled him to move quickly to Gondor to prepare for war. Also, Pinpin lighting the beacon of SOS. 4. Pipin and Merry practically were responsible for Saruman's elimination from the grand equation by getting the Tree worgs (or whatever their name is) to wage war against him. Merry's backstabbing of the king of the ring wraiths allowed Eowyn to defeat him. These hobbits achieved incredible feats!!

@@Dizpoza you forget how Merry and Pippin pretty much sacrificed themselves so Frodo could escape. They knew that all that was waiting for them was torture and death at the hands of the Uruk Hai. @@Dizpoza Awesome comment! Don’t forget the movie scenes in Moria. If Frodo didn’t request that the Fellowship go there and Pippin didn’t accidentally knock a bucket down a well and provoke orcs, Gandalf wouldn’t have fought the balrog, fallen off the bridge, died, and become Gandalf the White, a much, *much* more powerful version of himself who was more able to help everyone win at the end.

This was one of Tolkien’s themes. The Hobbits were not exceptionally strong, skilled or magically powerful. They looked up to - literally and figuratively, those who we perceive to be the heroes. We wish to be the Aragons and the Gandalfs of the world and yet Tolkien shows it’s the Hobbits, the everyday folk, who make the world a better place in our own little ways.

Elrond's expression at 2:37 breaks me. He mutters "go to him" to Arwen so fondly, but the moment she moves away from him his expression contracts and you can tell he's trying not to cry because this is it. This cements her decision that she won't be going West with him, that she'll never see her mother again and he'll live an eternal life hoping she had a long, happy, fulfilling life of her own, but never really knowing (unless of course, his sons stay long enough to witness their sister's fate).

This scene is a real tear-jerker. Not only it was perfect interpretation of Tolkien's book, but LOTR nerds get a real kick out of in-depth lore of this. One of my favorite parts is the song that Aragorn sings, the Elendil's oath, and Aragorn signs in it Quenya, the language of Valinor Elves. Basically the most significant event in Man's history was celebrated in Elvish language, celebrating end of war and start of Peace between races. Considering that time of Elves in Middle-Earth was basically over, this moment also basically plainly signifies the "passing of the torch" of sorts, from Elves to Men. And presence of Dwarves is also significant, as this also marks the end of wars between Dwarves and other races. So many significant points and ideas in 5 minute scene.
