I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause and him looking at his reflection in it's window's was representing him taking that moment of pause to reflect on himself a bit but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. At the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their lives respectively.

Bittersweet Symphony is my favourite song of all time by far!!! I’ve listened to it a million times & every time I do I feel something different. The magic of music. Richard Ashcroft is a genius who wrote one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. And it will forever be timeless. 🙌 Also Cruel Intentions is a banger movie & the song is used perfectly in it.

Richard Ashcroft’s song was supposed to have sampled the orchestral cover of “The Last Time.” Mick Jagger and Keith Richard’s have since returned the royalties to their rightful owner as they had nothing to do with the orchestral part of the song. “The Drugs Don’t Work” is said to be about Richard’s dad who was dying of cancer. The song “Everybody” is a great song from Richard Ashcroft’s solo career.

At it's height, this was also used in a series of Nike commercials featuring older people working out. One of them said, "I'm not strong for my age, I'm strong". Terrific ad campaign. This song was everywhere. The video was always on. Constant radio play. HUGE song of the latter 90's. I still play it and still love every second of it.

The Orchestral hook was actually taken from a Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" performed by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, I think they lost royalties from the song after they were sued for copyright infringement.....A great song and a good use of a sample though, it was a big hit in the UK. Enjoyed your reactions guys thanks!

The Rolling Stones' record label allowed The Verve to use a sample of their song, but the Stones' manager then denied them permission - and so the Stones ended-up getting all the royalties from Bitter Sweet Symphony. When manager died Mick Jagger and Keith Richards gave the rights to The Verve.

So funny you associated this with Coldplay. When I went to see Coldplay live for the first time on 7th July 2005, Richard Ashcroft (The Verve) was their support act. Due to massive traffic issues on the way to the venue, as well as on the parking grounds, we walked in when Ashcroft just started the last song of his set: Bittersweet Symphony. It had been a crazy day, due to the bombings that took place in London, earlier that day. Quite early in the concert Chris Martin talked about how they had been trying to reach family and friends back home all day. Credits to Coldplay for still playing a good show that evening, which must have been hard for them.

As I understand it a court awarded royalties to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and they were added as songwriters. While this was a big deal to the Verve neither Jagger nor Richards was aware of the details of the case. In 2019 they discovered they had been being paid the royalties for the song for years. The situation was rectified and they paid the royalties to the Verve.

I think she gets it more than him. It was meant to be depressing or at the very least cynical. That's the feeling he meant convey about how life is a meaningless struggle for money. I believe this band also wrote a song called 'The Drugs Don't Work' which was about the dying of the lead singer's father in real life from cancer when the drugs meant to relieve the pain stopped being effective.

Other people explained the symbolism behind the video in other video reactions. The people he bumps into, which looks on purpose, the screaming woman etc, all people he has come into contact with, in his life thus far, symbolises his relationships with them, good or bad. The royalties issue was resolved a few years ago, whereby Richard now receives all royalties from this legendary song from 1997.
