Today I am talking about loud vocal stimming. These are noises that some autistic people make when they are excited, happy, etc. They can sometimes be very loud. In my case, I was unable to explain why I would do it until now. I am getting better at controlling it, especially in public. ❤️ I hope you have a lovely evening!❤️❤️❤️

This gives people a very logical and empowering explanation for parents or teachers or caretakers when an autistic person is vocally (or physically) stimming, for people who don’t understand why or are even put off by the behavior. My brother in law has a very signature hand wave that he will do when he is excited about a particular topic and is talking about it. He knows he does it sometimes and other times it’s like: “Was I?” He doesn’t even notice anymore and we in his family, neither do we. To young kids who meet him or folks who just don’t get it and have the nerve to ask, I might say: “some people grin with their mouths? But my brother in law just prefers to grin with his hands.”

I’m a grown woman with a son with autism and I myself stim too. Never knew that about myself. It’s because of this channel I’m learning so much about my son, but also, about myself. Thank you!

Very well explained! Also as an autistic person who loves to hide in small spaces, that chair looks like an amazing place to curl up into. I need one as soon as im allowed to drill into my ceiling lol

Such good information, Toren and Mama Wolf. The first clue we had that our son was a little “different” was his inability to modulate his voice. I mean, all kids are loud at times, but he was loud all the time, and spoke very fast, too. I don’t think I realized that he couldn’t help it. Also, Toren, your swing thing looks amazing. I bet you love to twirl and spin in it!

I'm really grateful for your channel and how you explain these things. Thank you for sharing ❤️ Also, I find it so difficult sitting in class when I need to stim. Recently I have been vocal stimming more often, and after a really bad day I was sat in maths holding a vocal stim in. It was was difficult. I was physically stimming to try and ease it but as soon as I was outside I shouted so loudly. Stimming needs to be more socially accepted and your channel helps make a difference ❤️

My sister (ADHD) and I (Autism) make seal screaming noises at each other as a sort of group vocal stim. Uh, not just any random noises, I'll clarify, but the ones from that clip where the seals are going like "bffff. Eggg. Llegg," perpetual echolalia. It's silly and cathartic all in one.

I haven't done it in awhile, but it's pretty common to loudly burst out made up goofy songs that come out in an Ethyl Merman voice 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 often there dances that happen during this that are just like corny old timey dances from old musicals. Some people think it's funny and even join for a little bit. They do get sick of it and want me to stop. I have been punched a couple of times. I think you mentioned laughing. I also will start laughing out of nowhere at nothing in particular. But I laugh really hard and cant stop. Plus it feels good. People get tired of that one to. They get angry enough that I end up very sad. I live alone now and can do any stim I want as long as needed. It's fun when others join, but only other People with ADHD or Autism or both get it and join. It's fun. They are gone, so I need to find a new neurodivergent friend or two

Thank you for the comparison with trying not to laugh. My 10yo does a lot of vocal stimming, and although the rational bit of my brain already knows it's involuntary, it's really hard sometimes to manage when everyone around him has some degree of auditory sensitivity going on. I hadn't thought about it before, but I think "Would you ask him not to laugh at something funny?" might be a useful thought to hold on to when it gets hard.

Im not a very loud stimmer but i am an intense stimmer. I love my cat, ive obbsessed over cats since i was very little. I cannot contain my exitement and pure joy when it comes to my cat champlain. I have learned how to better express my love towards my pets, not to pull tails or other cat appendages, not to yell, gentler interactions. Havent learned yet not to play with him with my bare hands 😅 always get scratched and bit, he didn't learn as a kitten that he got more dangerous as he got older. He was surrendered to the spca because he was too playful towards other cats when they didnt want to play and he didnt understand cat social cues to stop playing lol. We tried having another cat but he would chase them around. The other cat was very hard of sight and wouldnt see him coming. We gave him away to another owner after a bit, he had a great time with him. I really got off topic haha

Oh. OH. So THAT'S what my son is doing. In combination with all the other behaviours we've witnessed we might want to get him tested.

You did say he has other behaviors that you've noticed but I just want to inform you that neurotypical children tend to do it too but neurodivergents just tend you do it way more than neurotypicals.❤

What do you recommend when the behavior/s an autistic child turn to harming others or themselves?

Whenever I get excited I tend to kind of stomp and squeal a lot! Sometimes I feel the need to scream REAALLY loud, though I can’t so I end up vomiting😓 Which is gross, feels gross and is not fun at all, but if I did my family would NOT be okay with screaming. I don’t really know what to do though, a lot of people have told me that I most likely have ADHD due to my actions and behaviors. After looking into it it seems like a huge possibility! After a few times of my aunt(who has two kids with it as does she) trying to have it looked into with professionals, it is very VERY clear that my mother hates the very idea of it! Now I am nervous to tell her about me wanting to get it checked out though. Does anyone have any tips perhaps?😅

Do you have any insight about how to help redirect vocal stimming? Specifically what I mean is that my daughter repeats inappropriate words often, i think because she just likes the feeling of the words. Like, “poop,” or “boob.”

Is it possible to change the sound, or is it involuntary? My mostly non verbal daughter makes this horrific sound when her device is loading, or her game tells her "try again" and this sound literally makes my bp go up, and causes me anxiety. I know this sounds selfish or whatever but just like they caant help their stigma, I cant help my biological response to it. It also hurts me to hear her so upset. Is there ANYTHING I can do to help her with this?

I'm not sure vocal stimming can be explained as a single phenomenon. Some of it is just humming an unusually stubborn earworm over and over again. Some of it is movement-associated. Some of it is because I just feel like being silly.

I love your videos, they calm me down and make me feel seen. I think I, myself am more autistic in a way like your mom but it seems my boyfriend behaves pretty much like you do, which through your videos, makes it possible for me to understand him better. Thank you for being (t)here! Sending love from Germany❤
