I watched this with my daughter who has schizophrenia and she was actually happy to see that someone with the disorder is being appreciated and honored for their creativity. I also showed her some of the comments and she said she doesn't think we should make assumptions about her state or ability to participate in this campaign and that we should all be respectful and allow her to have her own voice.

Well I think it was very artistic and not made to poke fun at!!! I loved it! and Kusama obviously was an artist and expressive despite her mental health. I thought it was fantastic and cool!

Coming from positive perspective, I would like to believe that the campaign with robot & figures is an act of admiration, recognition and respect for the Japanese artist regardless of her current situation. Let us focus on appreciating her works with only good vibes. 😆

In a world plagued by mental illness, I think this is a continuation of Kusama’s attempt to draw attention to how severe mental illness is viewed and using herself to do that is a heroic act. A lot of you saying you are scared of this representation rather than celebrating it’s very existence on such a large scale shows there is still a lot of work to do in order for people not to be scared of those with serious mental health illnesses or even the prospect of institutionalised life. Kusama is highly intelligent artist and just because she chooses to live an institutionalised life does not mean she is not capable of making decisions about her career, I think people need to better understand her and this is exactly what kusama is asking you to do, it is a fantastic instillation that encourages engagement and gets you to think. By doing it with a brand, it reaches the masses rather than being trapped inside the walls of a gallery that only a few choose it see, this is on the street for anyone to see. I ❤ it and thank Kusama for a fantastic attempt to get us to question how we see mental illness. Love to Kusama ❤💛🖤

I think it's great they're recognising who she is, for people who don't follow LV they wouldn't care to know who is the designer of their latest collection. having a giant version of her makes us wonder who is the designer and get to know more about her and her struggles and success. Congrats to Kusama. I hope she knows her impact at the stage of her career means a lot to people around the world.

Didn’t even occur to me that it may be poking at her. The campaign is brilliant and exciting.

For me I see it this way ...... an older woman..... when you get old you are certainly not that "seen" anymore. To see a older woman get all that attention is fascinating and great. We can be so invisable when older and Yoyoi Kusama is certainly "out there" now , as for the fact she has mental issues -- its a little difficult but - you know what - if this makes people "think" about others who are disabled and have mental issues and to see that they can do the same things as "ordinary' people can then I think its a good thing too ! Its part of life. Just my thoughts :)

Most artists use their art to express their pain and struggles in life. She isn't different in that, she is able to use her experiences in life to create something that sparks awe and joy in those who are lucky to view it. If anything it is empowering and encouraging for those who experience the same but aren't aware of their own capabilities.

I believe it is immoral to overpower the mentally ill and deny the gift of their talent. Let her shine. To often we "other" mentally ill people and exclude them from society. I greatly enjoy her work and her courage.

No one is confused. We are celebrating her. Get over all this are we exploiting her bs. She is a great artist. Celebrate that.

Personally, I love this. I think it puts the audience in her world. We see what she sees and in part become a part of her art. It’ a 4D way to experience art and creates curiosity for those who do not know who she is. In contrast, when bringing up the topic of her mental health, I also don’t believe it was meant to “poke fun” at her, although I can understand why it may seem that way. It is difficult to understand how she could have given consent for her likeness given her mental state. However, the way her condition is described makes me think it is similar to that of the “Alice in Wonderland Syndrome.” If you are not familiar with the syndrome, I would urge you to look it up. It’s quite interesting and paints a new light on the book itself. There are some really good videos here on RU-vid explaining it, but in a gist, it is believed that the author of Alice in Wonderland may have had that syndrome because the syndrome was named after the book itself. Many patients at that time reported having similar hallucinations as those depicted in the book, where things would get HUGE and then very tiny, and colors would change and morph. To me, this brings an unexpected awareness to her mental disorder, rather than mock it, but, of course, that is subjective.

I don’t think Louis Vuitton are mocking Kusama’s mental health. However I do feel they are commercialising her work, which is a bit sad, as for me this takes away it’s exclusivity and it’s mystery. However it could be argued that LV are helping Kusama gain a new audience by making her work more accessible to the masses. You might not be able to afford a painting, but maybe you can buy a bag. Or you might not have been able to see one of her exhibitions, but you can now go to the LV store to see how influential her work is.

These displays are beautiful. I do not agree with the negative perspective that Yayoi is being exploited because I assume permission has been granted. I think the fact that she has dealt with mental health issues for so long and has been so successful and influential is inspiring.

It is always scary when art becomes a product, especially in tjis unique case as this artist might not have full judgment of her reality.

Despite the controversy, LV campaign is massively impressive and a fabulous head-turner. I had the chance to visit a Yayoi Kusama art exhibition some years ago and enjoyed the experience. To be honest, I'd love to be there and see it in the flesh! Personally, I don't think it's offensive to the artist or the public, like other luxury-brand fashion campaigns we've seen recently, but the discussion is open and your concerns are equally valid. I can understand how one would seem confused and uncomfortable . I can also understand how one would want to celebrate this expression of the thoughts and illusions of someone who suffers from mental illness. It would be wonderful if very generous donation of the proceeds were given to benefit organizations treating mental illness and the families of loved ones having to provide care...

I’m going to Paris in a Month so will probably try to walk past to see it in person if it’s still there but I have this nagging feeling that the artist might not really enjoy the idea of being a consumerist product. Like how Frida Kahlo would likely hate how her face is plastered on cheaply made items for a capitalist market. Also I dunno how I feel about the idea that selecting Kusama is a safe option. Like going for a younger living artist runs the risk of them saying something racist or getting embroiled in a sex scandal or generally just doing something that clashes with the brands PR strategy. She’s still alive but her future actions are low risk as she’s elderly and institutionalised.

Please read literally anything about this famous, successful, working artist and your bad feeling will go away. :)

It's basically just colorful dots

I don't think she shouldn't be collaborating because of her illness. I am sure that in this case LV wouldn't have taken advantage if they thought it wasn't appropriate. And not because they care about people's feeling, as the backlash it would cause. I think that the art itself is very beautiful and special. It catches the eye for sure. And it even can send a message about what we can earn from keeping people with mental illness or other special situations- to be seen as equal and take part in other people's lives. And this is in case that she is capable of knowing good from bad. Either way- good questions to ask.

I'm all for it. However, being mentally ill should never be an excuse to commit heinous crimes no matter who or where you are. There's a difference in supporting a cause and condoning an evil act.

Dots mean art? Really? Damn .. I'm sorry I just don't understand. What's special about making a colored dots pattern using primary colors on bags? I also do this with my oil or acrylic paints. Even a child or an animal can do it too. If you say "we made a different design" then it's okay. But if you say that "we have created a special work of art by partnering with the artist" then this is wrong. Design is creativity and this is not a creativity. It's bullshit to put a simple dots on a classic louis vuitton bag. This is not an art.
