What's your favorite root veggie? Are rutabagas up there?

Rutabagas are tasty, so are turnips. I once put both in my potato soup. I really enjoyed it but my family, not so much. I had a lot of potato soup to eat. That was the last time I went "off script" with my potato soup. 🤣🤣

My sweet mother in law introduced me to rutabagas when I came into her family. I loved turnips growing up and they reminded me of turnips. Thank you for sharing this video. Headed to grocery store now to get a rutabaga and some hog jowl. I hope I can find some here in northern KY. It’s hit or miss! ❤

Absolutely love rutabaga boiled and mashed with butter like mashed potatoes. Lots of butter. It’s the jewel for Christmas and Thanksgiving turkey. My Mum would have it every Sunday with the roast beef dinner too. I’ve carried on the tradition. I make a soup with ground beef and vegetables and it’s in there too. My children growing up wanted me to leave it out but soon found out it didn’t taste the same. They now make the same soup with the rutabaga in it. In some British homes they call it turnip as I grew up calling it.

I'm from Canada and I grew up eating mashed rutabaga. Not like this but it was always a staple for Sunday dinners. We would just simply cut them into slices, boil them with salt pork, drain them them, mash them up with butter, salt and pepper. Absolutely delicious!

We make them with salt, pepper and butter up north. Ive discovered that they pressure cook so easily, as opposed to boiling. Then, I mash them and add the seasonings. My dad used to love mixing them with mashed potatoes. For some reason, we never eat rutabagas until Thanksgiving,… I guess just a family tradition..
@shelleymccrory-martines9906
Oh Paula…My Mama would cook these the Exact Same way. Plus she made a pan of Buttermilk Cornbread and that was it. So delicious. And as she got older, I took over all the cooking as she had macular degeneration. My mama and daddy are both southern from Mississippi and Georgia roots. She taught me how to cook southern style and it’s the best you can ever have. I love me some rutabagas and also love Turnips. Root vegetables are delicious. We usually eat them in the winter time but they’re perfect any time of the year. That rutabaga you got was huge. I buy the ones about the size of your hand. They’re easier to cut up. Thank you, Miss Paula. Now I have to go to the store and get Rutabagas. Yum and Best Dishes to You.

I ❤❤❤❤❤ rutabega !!! It's one of my favorite foods. And you're right, they are a pain to cut up 😡, but they are oh so good, especially with a piece of cornbread😋 I prepare mine with turkey necks or smoked neckbones. And you have to add the sugar because they are bitter. Thank you for this upload. I've been waiting for someone to prepare these another way.

My mom would cook rutabaga with salt pork, the same as with turnips. My sister does them the same way and they both loved the different greens. 🥬 I've never liked the smell of these different vegetables cooking and not fond of the taste either. I love many vegetables but have trouble with the ones that smell displeasing to me. We always had a garden when I was growing up and these vegetables were always on the table. I tasted all of them, all of us kids did but we were never forced to eat them if we truly didn't like them. My sister and brother still enjoy them and I eat something else.😋

I grew up eating mashed rutabaga as a child in middle Georgia (Cochran) prepared by my great grandmother who lived with us. However, now I mostly eat them chopped. A few times I have made them like mashed potatoes by adding cream and butter.

We typically only have these on St. Patrick’s Day in our Boiled Dinner. They ARE an acquired taste. My husband helps me peel and cube them. My pressure cooker gets a workout that day! We mash them up on our plates with butter and salt and pepper. My f-I-l sprinkles on acv.

You can poke several small holes in the rutabaga and cook it in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes. It will soften up enought that makes it much easier to peel and cut up.
