Best way I've found to pack more yarn (or fluffy clothes) in a small space is zip lock bags! Close them most of the way and then squish them as flat as possible (lay on them, even) to get as much air out as possible. Yarn smooshes a LOT and then takes up less space. It fluffs back up quickly and there's no need for a vacuum pump since it's just a regular zip lock.
